Great combination, the fresh fruity notes from the Manzanilla work well with Bunnahabhain.
    • Nose
      86 86
Salted caramel, creamy berries, honey, oak, cashews, some dried fruit
    • Taste
      87 87
Rich raisins, dried fruit with sweet malty notes
    • Finish
      86 86
Nose and taste carry through to a lingering finish. Dried fruit and caramel keep hanging around

    Excellent whisky!
I love dry sherry whiskys, especially Manzanilla.

    • Nose
Malt, sulphur, smoked dried fruit, chocolate, hazelnut, dry sherry
    • Taste
Light, smoky, blue cheese, very sulphurous, sweet, apple and plum marmalade, thin and refined, smelly wet rags, bitter willow bark
    • Finish
Enveloping the oral cavity with a dense ring of dryness, sherry, Manzanilla in its purest form, very dense bitterness of tannins from the bark of willow branches.
      Very long

The higher the expectations, the greater the disappointment.
    • Nose
Thick sweet raisins, jams, icing sugar, date cakes, glutinous rice cakes, organic solvents, very cheesy sweetness.
    • Taste
It's worse than smelling the fragrance. I thought it would be too sweet, but it turns out that the sweetness is very inelegant, and the sweetness is like drinking medical alcohol. The main notes are high-sweet grapes, with a strong sense of alcohol, soy milk, jujube sour, wind oil, and strong astringency.
    • Finish
      Numb, slightly grape aroma.

This whisky profits from some added water.

Nose: main aromas are hazelnut ice cream with roasted, even slightly caramalized nuts. There are some light fresh citrusy notes in the background, even some white pepper. Dark thick Italian espresso notes with really dark chocolate notes.

    Mouth: pretty similar, just delicious!

Finish: even here with similar notes, nutty, peppery and very dry (for my taste a bit too dry) and slightly bitter (not unpleasant but not very shy as well).

It is quite monotonously delicious :) - only the little bit too dry and too bitter finish prevents a top rating.

In continuation of the previous independent Bunnahabhain (SV), colleagues in the workshop warmed up with a sample of the official bottling - a high-strength batch with additional aging in a Manzanila barrel:

    ???? Color: dark amber

???? Aroma: at first somewhat closed... some kind of dustiness, chalk is felt... and only after a few minutes echoes of sweet Sherry begin to sound through it... but again, at first it is somewhat chaotic... a little spice... a little bit of molasses from some heavily candied strawberry or raspberry jam (which they decided to digest for the 2nd time) ... a little dark creamy chocolate ... dried fruit motifs are re-rolled in a light wave ...

???? Taste: well, it tastes a little different - you immediately feel dried fruit compote, then a little tart bitterness of oak tannins and light tobacco components...

????Finish: long-lasting... rather astringent... lollipop made from burnt dark sugar, dipped in a bittersweet herbal tincture...

????Conclusion: with all the right ingredients, the release turned out to be not bad, but in some places clumsy and unbalanced... too tart for my taste...

    ????Points: 85.5

    • Nose
herbal-fruity, sweet pickled strawberries, slightly fermented, resulting in pleasant acidity, hazelnut cream, brittle
    • Taste
immediately typical Bunna character, dark chocolate, cocoa, like liquid dark chocolate with 80% cocoa content, dry almost dusty
    • Finish
I like the very dry, quite bitter finish

11yo full maturation in manzanilla (American oak)

Nose: sherry heavy, nail varnish, seaspray, fresh prawns, elderflower and whitecurrant, sarsaparilla and ginger in syrup, umeboshi plum, liquorice root, angelica and baking spices
Palate: clove studded oranges in syrup, butter smeared barra brith, burnt orange peel
Finish: parkin, salt crusted beetroot and sultanas, golden caster sugar and caramelised fennel, soaked vinefruits

    With water
Nose: sundried tomatoes, aleppo pepper, haldiki olives, roasted peppers, ratatouille, preserved lemons
Palate: richer, candied orange peel, chocolate dipped orange slices
Finish: hawthorn fruit and allspice, Terry's Chocolate Orange, dried cherry tomatoes

Tasted as part of Southport Summer Festival Distell Finale tasting with master distiller Brendon McCarron

An extraordinary bunna. The Manzanilla sherry is very dominant. You either love this bottling or you don't at all. I think it's very successful.
    • Nose
      89 89
      Expressed.
    • Taste
      90 90
      Bunna-typical nuttiness. Milk coffee?
    • Finish
      89 89
The milk coffee stays. Milk chocolate is also added.

I tend to fall on the “i like it” side of the comments here… a winter-holidays dram that is bold in flavors and the spirit is quite feisty, too (maybe a bit too feisty).. sweet cinnamon and nutmeg, caramelized orange rind and raisins galore.. i imagine it would go well with the smoke from a burning fire-wood.. notes of Swedish herbal bitter in the aftertaste only call for a second sip from the sweet, savory liquid.. a very fun and fine dram.. are we not entertained?? the only not entertaining thing here seems to me to be the price on this

Nose: Farty, muddy, raspberries, cocoa and nuts.

Palate: Sulfur and unintegrated wine, “human” (sweat), and bad malt… no.

    Finish: Medium -> Metallic.

Aroma - Intense, caustic. Rotten fruits, spices, dates.
They stood and breathed ... Creamy, fruit tea, steamed raisins, sulfur content.
The taste is bright and sweet. Dried fruits, milk chocolate, peach, honey, spices, pepper, apricot pits, sulfur content.
The finish. Long lasting, sweet. Dried fruits, honey with bitterness, spices.
Conclusion. Quite aggressive in aroma, it is worth shaking the glass or taking a deep breath, you immediately get a direct blow to the nose. The taste and finish are more malleable, although the palette of tastes is rather scarce. You will hardly get pleasure from such a whisky, and for a whisky "for every day" the price is rather biting.

Conclusion: An ambiguous impression remains ... On the one hand, there is a soft, balanced aroma and a spicy, enveloping finish, and on the other, a “daring” taste that does not harmonize with the two previous parameters.
    • Nose
Spicy, with the sweetness of overripe berries, a little sourness of juicy lime, candied dried fruit and raw dough.
    • Taste
Pepper, much sharper than you would expect after a delicate nose. Wood, sweet apples, burnt caramel, hot spices prevail.

    Bunnahabhain + manzanilla = elite.

I’m a big Bunnahabhain fan and well as for the manzanilla cask, it’s an incredibly decadent way to mature/finish whisky. When I heard pretty much 10 years in manzanilla I thought this is too good to be true and had some initial scepticism.

Nose - boozy rum notes, soft sherry but full flavours including rich peanut and chicken satay.

Taste - Cajun spice, paprika and mild cardamom.

Finish - medium with dry herb spices.

Thoughts - it doesn’t live up to the lofty heights of previous manzanilla Bunnahabhain releases, but it’s still a weighty, full flavour journey which won’t disappoint, £115+ is expensive for this particular release but it meets my minimum criteria for great quality.

Fresh bright smell turns into dark chocolate with raisins, prunes in chocolate.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet, rich taste of chocolate and a little cinnamon. Some green Apple.
    • Finish

  28. L_Gillian scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Although wine-influenced whisky is not my preferred style, this one is so well-integrated i still find it enjoyable. There's just enough of the overripe funk to be distinct, but it never becomes sticky or overwhelms and leaves plenty of room for the distillery character to shine through.
    • Nose
      87 87
Very dark chocolate and sultana grapes. Roasted nuts and mossy. Caramelized sesame seeds and a constant subtle salinity lingering underneath.
    • Taste
      86 86
Syrupy mouth feel. Pepper coats the mouth before the ripe grapes come in. Sour grapes, cocoa powder and burnt nuts.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long. Ripe sultana grapes again, drying, a bit bitter. The funky grapes never take over, instead the spice mellows down to mellow fruitiness with some oak musk.

A Bunnahabhain that actually co-exists fairly well with the Manzanilla influence.
    • Nose
Spicy and sweet with touches of cocoa and oak shavings, as well as cracked black pepper corns and some banana peel. A minor note of sulphur, but also cherry syrup and cherry pits. Finally some red apple skin.
    • Taste
Subtle winey fruitiness and the syrupy mouthfeel to match it, then also white pepper, nutmeg, blackberries and toasted brown bread. Just a touch of sulphur in the background.
    • Finish
Lingering sweetness and spiciness. Basically more of the above.

Tasted this whisky during a blindtastingcompetion. In the nose I don't like it; some sour and a lot of lavas (maggi-blokje). A short and dry finish for me with too much bitterness.

  32. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

In principle exactly my thing, maybe a tad too dry, but these roasted aromas always pick me up
    • Nose
Creamy, nutty, a little lovage, hazelnut ice cream, pleasant, espresso, overall rather dry, dark chocolate, a touch of grated lemon peel, opens more and more over time, tart dark fruit is added
    • Taste
oily, creamy start, sour, nut, massive roasted aromas, Hanutawaffel, I like that very much, dark chocolate, very clear, espresso, becoming drier, raisins as overtone
    • Finish
slightly burnt, still Hanuta, dry, hazelnut, pleasant, if a little one-dimensional

Great, tasty, creamy Manzanilla ripened bunna. Nice nutty, great acidic counterpart and a little salt.

  34. Kaleva scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

ery untypical Bunna, especially on the nose (definitely due to manzanilla maturation). However, the nose is spoiled quite a lot with sulphur notes. I’m just wondering how these casks were released on their own, not rather as a part of some blended expression. Must be because of the unusual manzanilla profile. Anyways I found this whisky tad unbalanced on the palate and showing rather young nature. Does it cost 150+ bucks? No way in my opinion.
    • Nose
Sweet, dark chocolate, dark dried fruits, malt with noticeable fusel oils, notes of sulphur, sweet orchard berries (strawberries, blueberries), some roasted nuts with a hint of cinnamon, some dusty notes can be found too. Water opens up pears and caramel notes.
    • Taste
Rather harsh and punchy, tad sweet and oily, with a good dose of peppers including chili, quite mineral, malty, drying, nutty, salted caramel, dried figs, oaky slightly bitterish notes
    • Finish
Medium-long, malty, nutty, tad sweet, salty caramel, soft oak

Nice fruity and nutty nose. At first, fresh grapes paired with raisins soaked in rum dominate the nose. Later you will feel less of the grapes, but dried apricots with a slight sulfur note, which is not annoying. Here and there, roasted hazelnuts and dark chocolate gleam above everything.
    • Taste
      88 88
Quite mild in the first start. Everything that you already had in your nose comes back here, but there is also a noticeable dryness in the mouth, which evokes associations of cocoa powder and roasted nuts.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish is unfortunately not too long, but now the fruity notes remain on the tongue.

The dark, dark chocolate note stands out immediately. Far away it smells of strawberry. A little coffee or espresso is available. Extremely beautiful fragrance with a typical Bunnahabhain character.
    • Taste
      88 88
The chocolate note remains here too, but changes from dark chocolate to deep black chocolate with 80% cocoa. Reminiscent of the Burgundy finish. Here we have a full maturation. The somewhat damp, woody barrel note comes to the fore
    • Finish
      87 87
Delicious, but too bitter. The mouth contracts like an extremely dry wine. Unfortunately, this separates the Bunna from a top grade. What a shame
