Very ‘atypical’ Benrinnes... not comparable to the 1996 vintages I am used to... it has its qualities (a lot of cask influence) but they are not my ‘cup of tea’ to score big here...

Appears a little younger than the previous 10-year bottling with 55.9% (WID 148627), at the same time less alcoholic despite higher volume percentages. But also less sherry. And clear new-make notes. But one after the other.

Nose: very very distinctive. Newmake notes, minimal smoke, dark malt, malt beer, a lot of Baltic black bread, some cheese, physalis, ornamental quince, leather, wild berry jam with butter and cheese on black bread. Only fresh figs in the background. The alcohol is extremely well integrated. How can that be a Benrinnes please? Smells more like a Jura.

Palate: Intense and young, but also very mild in terms of alcohol, like 50%, with a lot of black bread, fresh butter, cheese and overripe gooseberries. And coriander seeds.

Finish: Baltic farmer's rye schnapps; minimally smoky, black bread, coriander seeds, ripe gooseberries, possibly blackberries.
