The Madeira barrel brings a nice selection of tropical fruits with it, overall a very successful barrel combination.
    • Nose
      88 88
Fruity and fresh nose with a mix of mandarins, honeydew melon, banana and mango. A smoky note that appears to have been absorbed by the fruit. Discreet, but clearly recognizable, but less dry and ashy than, for example, pure Bourbon barrel Kilchoman. Vanilla crescents and honey, white chocolate, powdered with pepper.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pleasantly strong start with the great fruit notes from the nose. Clearly playing in the direction of Tropi-Frutti gummy bears. The peat smoke note has a balancing effect (takes away a bit of the sweetness) and complements it (brings depth and spice). Nutmeg, clove powder, pepper, cinnamon and savory. Toffee, caramel, leather aromas.
    • Finish
      87 87
Dry and with increasing peat smoke, which can now emancipate itself from the (still present) fruit notes. Medium length. It becomes increasingly bitter, dried herbs and pepper stay on the tongue for a long time.

With the Kilchoman The Netherlands Small Batch No.2 you will experience how a mixture of bourbon, sherry and madeira casks gives the Kilchoman house style an interesting twist. This single malt whisky was distilled in 2011 and then rested in various casks before undergoing 8 years of maturation. The distillates were then combined and the whisky was bottled without filtering or colouring. The edition counts only 1,260 bottles, specially filled for the Dutch market.

Good one, but it's missing something. Still good one to check.
    • Nose
butter, cream, a little bit of peat, vanilla, you can smell alcohol.
    • Taste
cream, vanilla, peat and islay feel is there, maybe a little bit of alcohol that was not hidden that good, there is something interesting that I can't name.
    • Finish
      long one, prolongs taste

Nice smoker, quite balanced and easy to drink.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

So I didn't taste the Madeira, but in retrospect that makes sense! There was too much fruit for a simple bourbon cask, at least with Kilchoman.
    • Nose

Smoke, minerals and disinfectants are the beginning. The smoke gets stronger, chemical fire in character. After a while it looks friendlier, coal stove, a few citrus fruits, still disinfectant and minerals. Warmth intensifies the smoke and especially the fruit notes.
    • Taste
      88 88
The charcoal continues in the mouth before a large serving of dark peat sweetness is added. It dries slightly towards the back. The start is moderately strong. A little more bitter substances in the second sip, it looks ashier. Towards the back, a slight acidity now also lays around the palate.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is still dominated by the peat sweetness, but is underlaid by a slight bitterness. The finish itself is long. In the second sip, the acid also has a say.

Take: Around 220 l from a Madeira hogshead and around 660 l from the standard Machir Bay, each with no age information. The Vatting then results in the circulation of 1260 bottles for this batch with a strength of 49.4% alc./vol. A successful refinement!

    • Taste

Somewhat dry and sweet (sherry), nice peat, furry on the tongue,
    • Finish

Very long, a bit leathery, sherry and a great alcohol content,

    A fantastic Islay malt.
    • Nose
      88 88
Peaty, sherry, slight nuance of glue.
    • Taste
      89 89
The almost 50 AVB give the Kilchoman the right taste, which ignites perfectly on the palate.
      Sherry and Madeira unmistakable.
    • Finish
      89 89
Silky smooth finish. Lasts a very long time. All around a successful bottling.

    • Taste

  17. thijs100 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

This Kilchoman is good overall but lacks the depth and complexity that usually only lengthy maturation brings.
    • Nose
Dried seaweed and salty pebbles are intertwined with a dark smokiness. But this has much more to offer in the realm of fruitiness. There's some clementines, a touch of peach skin and ripe banana as well. Finally a touch of crème brûlée.
    • Taste
A spicy arrival with white pepper and nutmeg. It has an earthy peatiness, complemented by an almost candy-esque sweetness. Also touches of roasted peanuts and a dry maltiness. Finally some oak polish and soft note of iodine.
    • Finish
A tinge dry with some soft sweet notes and a lingering smokiness. It has a slight lactic quality as well.
