Whisky Reviews for Ben Nevis 1999 TSCL

A good, not a great Nevis. That still makes it a very nice whisky.

Not as expressive or fruity as you’d hope. A nice fat sulphury spirit (not cask). Fermenty, oily, spicy, orange sugar crystals. It doesn’t offer enough over the standard 10yr for the stats, but is still tasty nevertheless.

As for now, on a freshly opened bottle, I would stick to a 85 at most. Time will certainly improve things for a revisit. The palate remains closed no matter how long I leave the glass in air, even with the hastened process of airing under the air conditioner.

10 months later: its full potential is awakened. Clean cut and sweeeeeet.

First impressions reveal a closed profile - light on cereal, high vegetative notes, citrus from lime that is a tad bit bitter. Time is needed to open it up.
15 mins in is too early to give an in depth review. Some wood lacquer, dried seafood.

30 mins in - The nose is more robust but still is rather hard on the alcohol, sweet flavours growing which reminds me of sweet green apple, honey, alfalfa/hay and hazelnut.

45 mins in - still closed but more opened; fragrant vegetation and earthy notes, boiled potatoes, hay again and freshly cut grass. Bordering along red plums, dried orange peel and leather.

Salty. Medicinal. Not mellow at all, the palate certainly does not complement the nose. Boiled pear, papaya, vanilla essence, dried out wholemeal bread that's been sitting outside for hours.

Time is all we need, characters remain closed and shy. There is this one flavour that constantly wants to pop out but just doesn't reveal itself fully, and that, would be burnt rubber or smoked salami.

Dry and medium, dies soon after. A intense nutty taste linger throughout the mouth till the end. It has that sensation where you eat too many peanuts and no matter how much you rinse your mouth, the sensation remains.

Nose: A lot of fresh lemon juice, concentrated mango juice, um, this is the aroma of Ben nevis gene, very fresh, juicy, and also with some oily feeling. Yes, the performance is good (8). Spices, wort, and still a lot of juice on the upper layer. I can smell such whisky for a long, long time.

Drink: The temperature in the mouth is too high. I didn't control the alcohol, citrus, spices, salt, umami, juice, oak, and even a little charcoal smoke.

Overall: I always think that Ben Nevis, who changed the production process in 1996, will no longer have the same genes as before, but some bottling in 1998 and 1999 constantly broke this concept.

Initial nose - full on antibiotic. Need time and air.

After around 30 mins. It gets better. Very bright and lively nose, with artificial fruitiness from chewy sweets, sharp citrusy - lime and lemon, and slight hint of oranges. Some herbal and grassy notes, and some earthy tone too. Overall it's kind of perfume-y, but not too much, it's like walking along the perfume-y string. Honestly not the kind of profile I would enjoy very much. Can the palate be a surprise to me?

Still slightly perfume-y, but not really that bad. Good mouth-feel, with that herbal-grassy tone leading the way. Some chalk, minerals, and saltiness. Slight bitter towards the end.

Pretty short in the finish, slightly bitter and dry, white pepper, and orange peel.

Tasting 3 weeks later. The palate has opened up and is much more fruity than before - minus the closed up salt and wheat grain bread.

    Notes by The Single Cask:

Nose: Sweet malt, lime, dry roasted nuts note.

Palate: Lightly toasted oak with hints of vanilla and spice, some butter, and more of that citrus note.

Finish: Long and warming with oranges and wood spice.
