Whisky Reviews for Ben Nevis 1996 Arc

Archives has built up a solid reputation on good and relatively affordable bottlings of Ben Nevis in the last few years. This one is no exception, though - in my humble opinion - it not as stunning as other recent BN expressions of Archives.
    • Nose
A bit acidic at first nosing. After a while clear notes of gooseberries and blueberries. Followed with apple-mint and rosewater. Flowery notes of geraniums and freesias. Some mineral notes of wet stones as well. Slightly metallic edge at the background.
    • Taste
Now more on the citric side of the spectrum with peel zest, lemon and pear-drops. Enjoyable bitter-sweetness of pink grapefruit. Also blood-oranges and some kiwi-fruit. Later on hints of honey-clover and some sandal wood. Spices of camphor and a little eucalyptus. This BN definitely needs time to reveal all its flavours.
    • Finish
Medium long. White pepper and a little clove. Bitterness developing into a minty end. Enjoyable whisky no doubt, but a bit 'nervous' to my taste.

Woo, bought one just before they sold out! You Dutch folks are quick on the draw!

The nose leads with honey, herbal mint and vanilla cream, before the fruits then fully take over with a burst of strawberry, then lemons and mandarins. The palate leads with the herbs, and is surprisingly less fruity than the nose would suggest. Very much more the mineral side of Ben Nevis that comes through here, with a slightly chalky bite. The honeys and fruits come back along with a herbal wave on the finish, giving it an overall balance between the sweet and mineral. Overall a very clean compilation of Ben Nevis characteristics, that's neither too fruity nor too austere.

One of a line-up of 6 Arc samples.

Immediately clearly a Ben Nevis. A meaty flavor, some bbq notes and a lot of savory notes. It is a bit dirty, a bit sour and a bit odd. But that suits it perfectly!
      Very nice nose

Sweet, fruityness, some red fruits and some cream. Actually very mouth coating. Good body. Little sour, but in a good way. Also the characteristic dirty side of the Ben Nevis is present.

Long length. Very full and creamy. Burst of vanilla and some sour sweetness. Fades away a tad dry, but not enough to lose a point. Quite pleasing.

Chinese bayberry, passion fruit, mango candy, smoked pineapple that's a bit sour and not so juicy, long lasting grass. When sourness drops, toast with custard, fried fig and vanilla. Anise, a bit salty, sweet & sour apple, overripe banana. Pomelo and tiny bit of plastic. Dense fruit Lollipop after a sip
    • Taste
      91 91
Rich citrus juice with zest + honey, Dole papaya from the Philippines. Oily body, floral nectar. Pepper powder. Floral aroma becomes more obvious after sweetness drops. Waxy
      , light-coloured wood, tea.
    • Finish
      88 88
Mixture of yellow fruit jam, quickly turns into fruit stem, and picks up light-coloured wood, cinnamon, watery green tea with honey. Pepper spiciness. Resinous, bit tannin at the end
, eventually left with woody bitterness.

    nose:
    malty, floral, fruity, tangy, vanilla
creamy, lemon juice, apple juice, floral scents
    mouth:
tangy fresh fruit on Harlequin candies with vanilla, strawberry, creamy, buttery feel.
a little peppery spices, the malt arrives, some dry oak
pronounced return of Provins rose petal syrup, delicate and intense
slight trace of bitterness sealed by spices and this very pleasant fruity and vegetal return
    final:
lingering finish on dry oak, vanilla, spices and this basket of creamy fruits and rose petals.
    9.9

Quite a different ball game from other 1996 bottlings I've tasted; way more sour and buttery. Still a very well presented dram though.

Initially pretty sour and mildly sweet with a dirty musty note (curdled butter). Then sour apples, stewed apples, lemon, gooseberry, a little vegetal, pickles, krupuk, limestone and some ginger at the back. Actually it does not remind me of other Archives bottlings, but tends more towards the Kintra 2001 cask 152 (WB 90687), though that was even more buttery.
    • Taste
      88 88
Fat and creamy butter, sour, lemon and lime, lemon drops, sweet and bitter orange, unripe pineapple, grassy, some honey, ginger and white pepper.
    • Finish
      89 89
A finish of medium length: quickly dissapating sourness, revealing a sparkling and sweet fruit juice, finally shifting into a slightly drying and mildly peppery wood spice.
