Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 2013 SV

  1. Whisky-Connaisseur did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A young Caol Ila, bursting with power and pepperiness. It is still quite harmless on the nose, but shows its full strength on the palate. One can confidently add a fairly amount of water.

I thank whic (Whiskycircle) for the complimentary sample.

    • Nose
Campfire smoke on the nose with salty air and aromas of smoked ham. Then sweet cereals, with some fruit - apple, peach and grapefruit, accompanied by honey, cloves and salty caramel. The high alcohol content is noticeable but not pungent.
    • Taste
Intense start on the palate with smoke and some peat as well as a strongly warming chili pepper. Relatively sharp on the tongue. As soon as this pungency fades away, fruity wine aromas emerge, accompanied by creamy honey and vanilla, before the whole is wrapped in cold smoke.
    • Finish
The finish shows a nice length. It is oily on the tongue, accompanied by smoke, some grapefruit and dry oak and cloves.

With water: After the addition of water, smoke and peat aromas are joined by fruity notes of orange, cherry and some grapefruit, accompanied by vanilla cream. Still strong and peppery on the palate, also spicy with oak, cloves and allspice. Less sweetness and fruit. The finish is still long and slightly warming with smoke, ashes and a touch of grapefruit.

Despite its only 6 years old, the Coal Ila knows how to please. With a few years more in the barrel, it might have been rounder and more harmonious in some places, but as a young wild it comes into its own.
    • Nose
The color is a rich straw yellow, a thin film with oily streaks in the glass. Without water. Significantly cold charcoal smoke at first. After that, yellow and green pomaceous fruit that are not yet too ripe. There is also an aromatic lime. Neat caramel. The smoke is subliminally present the entire time and is increasingly changing towards smoked bacon. The alcohol is well involved for its 61.8%. No metallic notes or other missing notes noticeable despite its youth. With water, the smoke becomes even more intense and greasy. Slightly maritime with a seaweed aroma and a salty note.
    • Taste
Very sweet start in the mouth right away. Oily mouthfeel. The alcohol strength is shown by a slight sharpness reminiscent of red aromatic pepper. Furthermore a very nice fruitiness. Smoke is less dominant in the taste than one would have expected from the nose. Despite over 60% alcohol content, the youngster is easy to drink even without being diluted with water.
    • Finish
At the end slightly astringent on the palate and tongue, certainly mainly due to the alcohol strength. Towards the end, the smoke and peat come back compactly. Some oak spice and bitterness, which is reflected in a pleasant coffee note. The aromas from the smoke remain in the mouth for longer, otherwise the finish is more medium to short-lived.

These de-char-re-char wine cask can be a blessing and a curse. If the whisky is still allowed to “play along” with its own profile, then I think it is a match. That is also the case here. I think it is very tasty and it is really impressive. But you have to like the chewing gum notes. Full review (german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/07/20/junge-caol-ila/
