    Color: honey gold
    Viscosity: oily
    Dram: undiluted and diluted

My first malt from the new Annandale distillery in the Scottish Lowlands. It is rather untypical that they offer smoky as well as non-smoky whiskys in their portfolio. Today I took on the smoky representative. The smoke is very clear on the nose and in the taste and I would have put it blindly to Islay. More like a young Ardbeg. Overall, however, a really great malt. It lacks the complexity that is not to be expected given its age. In the finish, the metallic youth flashes through from time to time. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what will come out of this distillery in the next few years. The first malt I was allowed to taste is definitely very promising.

    My rating system:
    100-95: Exceptional whiskys
    80-94: top whisky
    50-79: standard whisky
    0-49: flops
    • Nose
The first impression is very sweet, paired with a distinct smokiness that I would rather have put in Islay. The alcohol is perfectly integrated despite the high alcohol strength. The initial smoke disappears after a short time and then rather remains in the background. Nice greasy notes emerge. In addition, there are light cowshed moments, wet hay, behind which there are fruity notes, creamy notes of creme brûlée with slightly too caramelized sugar, slightly burnt, light saltiness, cod, citrus-heavy notes of grated lemon peel, pasta water, with water the smoky notes come out even more , almost like tar, paraffin, soot, but also again citrus-heavy aromas of lemongrass, balsa wood, wood shavings, lightly burnt wood after a laser engraving, multivitamin juice, gooseberry, freshly ground white pepper, chili powder, light aniseed notes, muesli, oat flakes
    • Taste
The alcohol is really pushing, but amazing for this alcohol strength, how gentle it is on the tongue. There must be great craftsmanship behind it. The malt starts out really, really sweet like cotton candy, forest honey, sweet popcorn, caramel candy like Werters Echter, freshly cooked vanilla pudding, creme brûlée with caramelized sugar, only then does the distinct smoke set in, like freshly smoked ham, clear umami notes, plus really nice fruity notes after lightly burnt orange peel on the charcoal grill, grilled strawberries, sweet cherries, caramel pudding, woody notes are added with water, light cinnamon notes, liquorice snails, salty notes of pasta water, grilled shrimp, freshly ground white pepper, rice paper
    • Finish
The smoky, ashy notes stay in the mouth forever, plus clear and beautiful fruity notes, light espresso moments, dark chocolate, roasted almonds
