    Twin

This summer The Whisky Jury released two single casks from 2010 with the name Williamson on the label. This clearly refers to Elizabeth Williams – Bessie for short – and thus means Laphroaig. Cask twj-Lph01 (the names leaves nothing to the imagination) yielded 230 bottles and was sold out in no time, while cask twj-Lph02 was bottled exclusively for the Belgian shop Wine4You. This release was 225 bottles strong (at a slightly higher ABV). I had the good fortune of being able to get a bottle from Ivo’s shop.

The nose is very similar. Wonderful ashes, tar, peat, joined by some soft sweetness like banana. I also get some citrus and less plasticine – correction: no plasticine. And hardly any stable scents. I do not mind. Au contraire, this is very clean. The smokiness starts somewhat shy, but develops quickly.

The palate is very similar as well, but just a tad more clean, making the smokiness more outspoken, but the nuances are very small. This is like an identical twin! However, this one leans slightly more towards maritime notes and is a tad less sweet. Brackish water, a good helping of salt & pepper, wonderfully sweet & sour peat.

The finish is a lot longer though, making this Laffie win on points. The smokiness is a lot more intense.

While I find this one less complex than his brother, I strangely enough enjoy this one a tad more. But what you should take away is that both are outstanding! And this one is still available at Wine4You for some 80 EUR. Do not hesitate.

H2h with Lph1. That one has more sweetness on the nose, although it really takes some time and effort to get to the aroma's.
It gains power with nipping and best in finish.

Pretty modest, only a little smoky edge, a bit of rubber. Later on some fruity notes, citrus, and even eucalyptus.
    • Taste
      87 87
More power than the nose, some licorice, spicy, pepper. Sweet smoke, some honey, caramel. Pretty full body.
    • Finish
      88 88
More powerful now, pepper, licorice. Sweet smoke, pretty long, ash.

    • Nose
A lovely layer of peat. Ash. Vanilla and a hint of biscuits. Bandages. Red apples and lemons in the background. Seaweed. A hint of a salty vegetal broth and iodine.
    • Taste
Peat again. Vanilla too. A smouldering bonfire. Seaweed. A medicinal note, iodine. It’s a bit briny and somewhat herbal.
    • Finish
Long with mostly peat and vanilla.
