    First :-)

Crazy! Again and again HL manages to bring excellent bottlings onto the market, many of which can have an older age with a 2 in front. I was surprised by both the Inchgower from 2018 and the Ben Nevis 23 from 2019 ... I find the usual filling strength of 50% perfectly placed. In addition to the age and price, there is nothing to complain about at € 129 ...

I feel the nose as an old school, even with foolish will to seduce. The classic notes are there.
The Deanston is not pasted. Grapefruit, biscuit biscuit, roasted aromas, chervil, quince and rich vanilla.
First in the mouth a bit grizzly, peppery hot, then orange, cherry, puff pastry, vanilla dumplings and a lot more.

The finish is dry, medium to long and peppered with orange zest and some wood.

I am annoyed not to have bought a second bottle ...

I can only agree with Helgo (even if we don't even know each other): Ingenious distillery, ingenious barrel, ingenious age! HL did everything right here. Reminds me of the Clynelish 22y from Friendship Bottling, only I find clear orange zest here. slàinte

I like Deanston, but I'm not impressed with this one – and fairly certain that it would score significantly worse in a blind tasting.

Woody, resiny and savory to start, with that typical, intense Deanston sweetness, liquorice root, lovage, and a lot of American oak (marzipan as the telltale sign). I find it a bit aggressive on the nose, even though it's already been diluted down to 50. The alcohol is noticeable and it has done its job on the wood, loosening and extracting all kinds of aromatic compounds that now come across as peppery, herbal, saccharine, and somewhat glue-like. With time, the age becomes more apparent, but I feel like these deeper, more subtle notes get lost in the sherry-cask and wood influence. There's that grimy, greasy, charred Deanston weight, to be sure, but for my taste, the cask is too dominant for a higher score.

Meh. An okay modern sherried whisky, but nothing more. The wood spices are in full control, and the sherry influence makes this seem younger than it actually is. I currently have a ten-year-old cask-strength Deanston from an American-oak sherry cask going, and it's not all that dissimilar. Actually, I find it vastly superior. This comes as no surprise: it's not the first time I prefer the younger Deanston vintages to the older ones...

A lot of bite but not a lot of depth. I can't find much here besides a pretty standard modern seasoning sherry flavor and some ginger heat.

A fantastic whisky, and an even better Deanston.
Really good, outstanding Deanston are rare, but this is definitely one of them.
I agree with all of my pre-testers.
Hunter Laing has found a great cask, where the sherry brings additional aromas and complexity in the best possible way.
No sulfur or spent matches, no negative influences.
Perfect age, excellently balanced and balanced, very complex, fine, tasty, elegant and at the same time powerful

Can't quite understand the 84 rating here. This is a really great whisky that is beautifully balanced. A pleasure!
