I like Deanston, but I'm not impressed with this one – and fairly certain that it would score significantly worse in a blind tasting.
    • Nose
      86 86
Woody, resiny and savory to start, with that typical, intense Deanston sweetness, liquorice root, lovage, and a lot of American oak (marzipan as the telltale sign). I find it a bit aggressive on the nose, even though it's already been diluted down to 50. The alcohol is noticeable and it has done its job on the wood, loosening and extracting all kinds of aromatic compounds that now come across as peppery, herbal, saccharine, and somewhat glue-like. With time, the age becomes more apparent, but I feel like these deeper, more subtle notes get lost in the sherry-cask and wood influence. There's that grimy, greasy, charred Deanston weight, to be sure, but for my taste, the cask is too dominant for a higher score.
    • Taste
      84 84
Meh. An okay modern sherried whisky, but nothing more. The wood spices are in full control, and the sherry influence makes this seem younger than it actually is. I currently have a ten-year-old cask-strength Deanston from an American-oak sherry cask going, and it's not all that dissimilar. Actually, I find it vastly superior. This comes as no surprise: it's not the first time I prefer the younger Deanston vintages to the older ones...
    • Finish
      83 83
A lot of bite but not a lot of depth. I can't find much here besides a pretty standard modern seasoning sherry flavor and some ginger heat.

    Nose
sweet, soft, powerful. Dignified, you can smell the age here. Concentrated, the aromas hit your nose and I look forward to the first sip.
sticky sherry, sweet with forest honey, dates, cinnamon and leather. Yummy! Slightly musty, but in a delicious way. Caramelized apples, like when you cook them really soft in the frying pan and caramelize them with cinnamon and sugar. This baked apple becomes even stronger and almost dominant. Also some wax and fruit acid. A hint of mint?

    taste
Great! Powerful, a real taste explosion, deep sticky sherry with baked apple and wax and forest honey. Sweet but also slightly bitter. there are now mineral notes and candle wax. Reminds me of my favorite distillery :-) Cinnamon, caramel and coffee, plus sweet aromas of sherry. Spice mix mixed with honey, but then more on the sweet side. A malt that you can keep in your mouth for a long time and enjoy it better. Furthermore, the word "dignified" comes to mind.

    departure
Soft, with mineral aromas and wax, plus sweet sherry, Medjool dates and a very long-lasting sherry-wax mixture. Very tasty and can stay for a long time.

    Conclusion
I think the drop is great - everything fits for me. Great experience, I'll try to get a bottle there. The waxy dun mineral aromas are of course always very popular with me, that makes sense.

Quick review from a single small dram.
A bit disappointing for a 24YO Deanston sherry cask, but water helps a lot. And I like the progression from nose to finish.
    • Nose
      85 85
      Sour apples, apple juice.
      Musky wet wood.
Not much sherry influence to talk about.
The alc is really not too well integrated and very noticeable for 50%
    • Taste
      86 86
Here as well I ended up searching in vain for the sherry.
      It's more peaches and apples.
It improves with a drop of water and I got some nice raspberry notes.
    • Finish
      87 87
Neat the alc seems to chase this into the finish, it needs water.
Water brings out a lot more sweetness and make it very enjoyable.

    Tasting: 08/2022
    • Nose
Alt. Law. Not intrusive. Still complex. Here we smell for a long time :-)
juice oranges. Leather from the old book cover. Grapefruit with great acidity. Toffee. Dark fruits. Vanilla.
Later comes some sulfur (I like). Musty wood. Out back Tropical fruit notes of pineapple and mango. Some bitter cocoa.
    • Taste
Sweet creaminess lines the mouth. Orange. biscuits Slightly dry. Pepper. plums. figs Cinammon. Vanilla. Lots of wood and sulphur.
    • Finish
Long. Lots of chocolate and wood. Almost like a liquor, it slides down the throat. Here, too, orange remains and vanilla sweetness.

  12. Lakerfield scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Very fruity Deanston with a delicate sherried edge. Don't expect much sherry as it plays a supporting role, I reckon it was from a refill cask. Nose was mainly fruity and quite sharp, time didn't help that. The palate was good with some old school shimmers, fruity with some sherry components in a lightly dry style. The finish was too short, mostly oak-forward and for me the weakest part.

    Based on a sample.

I found this Deanston a bit stubborn in the nose at first, but it totally won me over on the palate!

I like it and it tastes good.
    • Nose
First impression: Woody and sweet musty. Strange and interesting at the same time. A candy shop next to a warehouse with freshly polished discount furniture.
Now dusty almonds and artificially sweetened strawberries show up. Wood varnish in combination with nut cream and cotton candy. strange.

But it's kind of fun, even if the wood has a partially overlaying character and the sherry creates a colourful, strange roller coaster ride in the nose.
    • Taste
Creamy and sweet, the 50% fits perfectly.
Hey, that's delicious! It is fresh and lively at first, then turns into a very delicate, wood-influenced tartness. Immediately afterwards, great juicy tropical fruit notes appear, dried pineapple and some mango paired with vanilla ice cream come to mind. I've found something like that with older bourbon cask aging - I like it very much!

The strange mix of aromas from the aroma is gone and leaves room for really great, tangy fruit and wood notes due to age.
    • Finish
      flawless.

Ideal transition into a sparkling fresh finish with a beautiful citrus character, tropical notes, dry but light chocolate, apple peel and spices. Lasts a long time and fades relatively slowly.

What's going on here ... I'm absolutely with Totoro and unfortunately I can't understand the cheering reviews here. Was that a hype bottle?

I'll try it again and hope that it was due to my form today - but so far it's too angular, restless and flat for me.

A fantastic whisky, and an even better Deanston.
Really good, outstanding Deanston are rare, but this is definitely one of them.
I agree with all of my pre-testers.
Hunter Laing has found a great cask, where the sherry brings additional aromas and complexity in the best possible way.
No sulfur or spent matches, no negative influences.
Perfect age, excellently balanced and balanced, very complex, fine, tasty, elegant and at the same time powerful

    First :-)

Crazy! Again and again HL manages to bring excellent bottlings onto the market, many of which can have an older age with a 2 in front. I was surprised by both the Inchgower from 2018 and the Ben Nevis 23 from 2019 ... I find the usual filling strength of 50% perfectly placed. In addition to the age and price, there is nothing to complain about at € 129 ...

I feel the nose as an old school, even with foolish will to seduce. The classic notes are there.
The Deanston is not pasted. Grapefruit, biscuit biscuit, roasted aromas, chervil, quince and rich vanilla.
First in the mouth a bit grizzly, peppery hot, then orange, cherry, puff pastry, vanilla dumplings and a lot more.

The finish is dry, medium to long and peppered with orange zest and some wood.

I am annoyed not to have bought a second bottle ...
