    Nice color.
    Almost red.

I still don't smell anything from the wine itself,
    instead wonderful cask notes.
The wood looks lovely and fine.

    Tart taste.
    Strong and good.
    No wine, no fruit.
    Barrel pure!

    But really good...

For me in real dessert whisky. Delicious!
Pretty good considering he certainly hasn't had an inordinate amount of maturing years.
Fruit, nice oak spice and lots of chocolate. What more do you want?

Wonderfully intense nose with lots of fruit aromas (mainly red berries), but also a decent amount of spice.
Red jelly with ripe blackberries, raspberries, cherries, but also slightly sour notes (cranberries and grapefruit) can be found here. In addition vanilla, rose water, umeshu, raisins, dry dusty wood, a hint of mint, cinnamon and leather.
    • Taste
      88 88
Powerful start with beautiful oak. Well integrated alcohol. Vanilla, caramel, strong oak spice, again the ripe red fruits, cinnamon, gingerbread, speculoos, leather, Mon Chéri chocolates.
    • Finish
      88 88
Mid-length finish. Plums, marzipan, cherry, leather, espresso.

Plum wine, strawberry cake, effervescent powder, raisins, barley sugar, liquorice, forest honey. A lively and lively nose.
    • Taste
      87 87
Various spices, rum raisins, again plum wine, red berries, chocolate, a little malt
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish is relatively abrupt and reveals that it is not too old. Slightly angular, but still enjoyable.

    30 ml / ¥1200 @ Malt Heads.

Appearance: Deep amber-red with nice legs.

Nose: Wine, raisins, caramel, cinnamon, malt sugar, oak.

Palate: Cinnamon, oak, malt sugar, pepper, vanilla, raisins, wine, cherry.

    Finish: Hot and peppery, sugar.

With Water: Needs a bit to mellow it.

Overall: Certainly nice, but totally does not live up to the hype or the price.

Ichiro’s Malt Wine Wood Reserve is the best bottling of the series to my tastes – and it really pleased me to be say that about a wine influenced whisky (not always my cup of tea). Not only are the Hanyu and Chichibu elements so well integrated that you’d not be able to differentiate them, but the wine influence is perfectly judged – big and pronounced on the nose, restrained and supportive on the palate. Water ruins this balance to my taste and brings out a heap of unrefined brutish tannins – your mileage may vary, but I’d happily drink this in the form it has been presented to me.
    • Nose
Immediate and highly pronounced wine aromas – soft black and red fruits – black cherries and raspberries. A touch of rose and violet and we’re firmly into the category of some youthful Pinot Noir. Fortunately, whilst wine-forward, the nose does offer up other nuances – gentle toffee and coffee, grassiness and a touch of menthol are joined by nuttiness from almonds (sugar coated) and some hefty spices – pepper, and anise in particular. The addition of water completely alters the balance of this whisky, reducing the definition from soft fruits, almost entirely to the cask influence – vanilla, coconut and bitter spicing. Interesting, but certainly much better balanced in its 46% ABV form.
    • Taste
A slight oiliness on arrival – the wine influence is much reduced in the mouth. Juicy red berries (raspberries and cranberries) and blackberries (even some Ribena berry) start us on a sweet path, that is supported by chocolate, toffee and sweet cinnamon spicing. Development quickly changes things up a notch – pepper, chilli, grapefruit and citrus coming through in the mid to back palate. You don’t even want to think about adding water to this. Whilst the existing profile moves from sweet through spicy into bitterness, it does so in a measured way - water disrupts this, adding all the emphasis to the bitterness and oak influence, which invariably brings with it a ton of tannins. Again, 46% is where this wants to be.
    • Finish
Medium with pepper spicing, chocolate, brown sugar and a touch of cough syrup.

  16. Calmar scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Extremely unbalanced, a good start in the aroma, simple and uncomplicated, somewhat vulgar, but pleasant and possessing a sufficient depth, then a flop in taste - abruptly, rudely, inappropriately, the aftertaste is not bad, light and refreshing, but unfortunately it does not save the situation .
    • Nose
An open, warm, raw warm tree, wine tones, bergs, fermented jam, cherries in sugar, confectionery notes, apple chips, berry syrup, vanilla.
    • Taste
Wine with sharp oak inclusions, too much oak, peppery wave, sweetness - everything is very messy, tattered.
    • Finish
Wine-oak with lemon zest, light grassy bitterness, a young bark, a tender taste, orange peel, over time, malt-intoxic notes of light beer pop out.

A really pleasant dram. Fruity, slightly bitter. Really very successful

  18. Segens scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

It is better than the Double Distilleries and incredible if you think of the foundation in 2008. So all whiskies are very young but still have a quality to offer. No suprise that these drams are so demanded!
    • Nose
Very nice nose which offers green tea & dark berries (due to the wine) quite fruity and also very nice balanced. Much better nose than the Double Distilleries which was already good.
    • Taste
Still green tea and the wine influence but also oaky bitterness which is very decent and due to its young age and therefore not too annoying.
    • Finish
      Long and good finish!
