As of 2021, NAS has become much of a synonym for BS. It wasn't until I tasted this magnificent Laga then I realised NAS was a term with completely different meaning more than a decade ago.
    • Nose
      91 91
Mandarin orange pith, quickly developed into chenpi, nutmeg and liquorice. Farm after the rain on a spring day, fertiliser, a bit of pungent rubber. Outside of the melon skin, MSG or chicken powder for Chinese cooking.  Beetroot, the Lagavulin symbolic vegetative peat, ginseng and salted lemon. After breathing in the glass, the fruitiness became fresher, oranges, black plums and apricots. A light wave of nuttiness was also present. I do enjoy the complexity. It's not punchy, but instead, warm hospitality was provided.
    • Taste
      92 92
A fruit feast kicked off, so yummy it was! Sweet grapes, pears, peaches, blood oranges. Followed by light spices that added the complexity, roasted mushrooms with pepper sprinkled. Sweet charcoal.
    • Finish
      91 91
Liquorice, vanilla creamy ice cream, a splash of citrus zest. Toffee, orange jam, walnuts. Then a minute later, vegetative peat, BBQ aubergine and mushroom. Lingering ginseng.

Reduced smoke and power but intense and beautiful strong sherry influence in return. A great cask strength version of the 2010 Lagavulin Distillery Edition (which btw. makes this one 16 years old). One for the Laga history books.

Smell: Thick fatty sherry: grapes, figs, plums, pears and orange. Slight hint of sulfur, peat, clay, seaweed, ash, cloves, pepper, nutmeg and caramel.

Palate: Raisins, apple, pear, plum, honey, earth, dusty wood, seaweed, smoke, clay, peat and spices.

Finish: long and soft, with pepper, smoldering fire and salty sea. Fantastic whisky.

This is one of the best Lagavulins I've had in a jar lately. In the past 5 years there has been nothing better with current bottlings (which I could try).

A strong Distillers Edition variant - which Lagavulin fan has not always dreamed of!

In parallel to the famous 16yo White Horse-Lagavulin tasted with gold letters. Both are of the same quality, for me this Distillery Only is even a nose ahead.

Full, full, powerful and very balanced. The smoke is there and in just the right amount and well integrated. This one switches off the only major weakness of the normal DEs (namely the somewhat too low punch) - as expected with the barrel strength - but retains the character with the combination of fruit, smoke and sherry.

    It's a lot of fun!

Excellent, multi-faceted and perfectly balanced, smooth, soft, complex, fairly strict.
    • Nose
Open, dry, old solid furniture, furniture varnish, cigar box, coniferous wood - larch, cedar; light peat shades, caramel, dry grass, old leather goods.
    • Taste
Saturated, dense, caramel, oak, a few needles, young shoots of larch; Cappuccino, bitter chocolate, ginger notes, weak smoke-peat tones.
    • Finish
Spicy, sweet and sour, oak, coffee, nuts, caramel, dried herbs, ginger, ashberry.

Sweet fruits, furniture polish, peated smoke, old leather, toffee, cream, iodine, cake, allspices and sea salt notes on nose.

Dryness, dust, peated smoke, light fruits sweetness, green apples, iodine and spicy notes on palate.

Vanilla, spices, dryness, dust, peated smoke and iodine notes on long finish.

[December, 2013]  I found another dram in an advents calendar sampled by MaRa.

    In
my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90.  I took no detailed notes.

Ah, all I like: peat, fat, on tar, tobacco and barbecue sauce, and sherry, full of cocoa, dried apricots with a touch of blood orange. Yum !!

The palate is fat, with a frank attack and a beautiful smoky peat (Lapsang Souchong, really!) That invades the palate. The sherry brings a nice roundness to the whole. Salt and tobacco notes complete the picture. Alcohol is perfectly integrated.

The finish is very long, abundantly peaty and bitter notes of gentian and licorice mingle with the tangy sweetness of candied orange zest.

A beautiful Lagavulin perfectly to my taste!

Nose: chocolate cream, cocoa, cream, peat and
medical notes of iodine and sports bandages. Too smoky
Coffee flavors, earthy, spicy, slightly fruity,
English marmalade, nutmeg, leather and something farmy.

Taste: Oily, spicy with a lot of salt, a little sherry
and orange notes as well as peat, coal, ashes and more and more sturdy and
scorching pepper coming up. Earthy-fresh flavors are coming now
Add a touch of sticky honey.

Finish: Medium length with predominantly smoky peat. The last sweet fruit flavors give way to the tart notes.

    91 points (nose: 91 / taste: 91 / finish: 90)

Hm, I thought I added that as a note at some point in the past already. Apparently not.

This is from the same cask-vatting as the 1994-2010 Lagavulin Distiller`s Edition, but left at vatting strength and was sold for 70 GBP at the distillery if I remember correctly.

  23. Willie JJ scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Not the best Laga ever bottled, but it remains Lagavulin and I love it for that.
    • Nose
The soft, but massive peat is beautifully balanced with the fruit notes.
Where the fruit on the standard distillers edition seems jammy, here
the higher strength makes for a combination of fresher fruit and boiled
fruit sweets and barley sugar. Plenty of classic iodine and salt fish
      peat-reek in there too.
    • Taste
Quite tight on the palate at full strength, but it will do. Raspberry and rhubarb with sugar and ash enveloped in coal smoke.
    • Finish
Slightly sour and ashy. But I like it.

I fully agree with you, magic_slim! Lagavulin still is one of my first "loves".
    91 Points.

These Destilleries Only bottling is worth it. Contained is mainly the Destillers Edition 1991. At just 14 years very delicious.
    • Nose
The nose is medium. Sherry, peaty, smoky, campfire.
    • Taste
The taste is complex. Sherry, peaty, smoky.
    • Finish
The finish is long. Warm, smoky, peaty, spicy, salty.

  26. magic_slim scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

This is a perfect example why I am in love with Lagavulin. The combination of sherry and peat is perfectly balanced.
    • Nose
Warming. The first impression coming into my mind is sherry, and then - of course - peat. Smoked tea is coming up and dried apricots.
    • Taste
Rich with plenty of sweet peat and smoked tea concentrate. The sherry influence is still obvious. Liquorice is present as well. This is unbelievable tasty !!!
    • Finish
Long and warming with a lovely peatyness, becoming slightly spicy and salty.
