This is an Ardmore that has been matured in ex Laphroaig casks and finished in an oloroso quarter cask. I would not have guessed Ardmore but rather Laphroaig, as the cask clearly takes a lot away from the original destillate. No problem for me though as I like Laphroaig.

The color is red winish goldish and it shimmers in the glass.

Nice bottling for a great price, as we are used by the whiskybroker but not an every day dram.

The ex Laphroaig casks definitely left their marks on the nose I'm not an expert on Laphroaig as most of the time I think it is to expensive though. Smoke immediately fills the nose it is a medicinal smoke though but a little metallic followed by salt. Then you get the sherry notes, sour cherries, rasberries, dark berries in general, and a little bit of vinegar.

Smoke immediately fills the mouth again medicinal smoke but the sweetness pushes hard to be the dominant force I get apples, Pears, vinegar, and berries but the smoke pushes it back again.

This is a very long and powerful finish.

Starts of sweet but immediately gets pushed back by very intense medicinal smoke notes, a little bit bitter even like homeopathic cough drops unfortunately not much less from the smoky side. Also you can clearly taste the wood influence because it is a bit spicy.

Some will love this - but not me, the perfumed oloroso gets in the way and then Laphroiag phenols just take over. The Ardmore doesn't have a chance to shine.

VERY elemental (as all WHB bottling's) with masses of uncompromising character.

Powerful oloroso perfumed nose, juicy raisins, Laphroiag medicinal back notes. Strangely there is zero Ardmore coal smoke or malt character.
    • Taste
      79 79
A confusing fast swirl of taste, just when you have spotted something it is replaced by another and another. Bonfire toffee, coffee, mint, grapefruit? Perhaps it will settle down once the bottle has been left open a few weeks.
      And a cloying oloroso sweetness.
    • Finish
      64 64
Mouth numbing peat cancels out everything else. Residual anaesthetic just kills the experience.
