    The discrepancy between the nose/initial taste and what follows is rather large
    • Nose
      Sweet, fresh and fruity, this Speyside single malt is rather honeyed with touches of beeswax, burlap, ozone and an assortment of stone fruits, such as nectarines and peach. A touch of sugared breakfast cereals, but the sweetness is balanced by some vibrant lemon zest.
    • Taste
      Extremely fruity and quite waxy, it's remarkable how much this initially reminds me of some of those undisclosed 1973 Speysiders. Honey but also more citrus (grapefruit) and stone fruits. More spicy. However, it quickly becomes apparent this is not of the same high quality. There's a leafy bitterness here and it doesn't match the depth and richness of those modern classics.

      Mandarin orange for a few seconds, then strong but unfortunately short loquats and Carabao mango. Some anise and pistachio shells if you kept sniffing, as well as kaya toasts popping from the sides. Vanilla, sweet hay and digestive biscuits. The upfront fruitiness smelled nice but lacked complexity and longevity. A little bit more grated coconut and dried green tea leaves after a sip.

      Yellow fruits, let's break it down: sweet oranges, yellow plums and loquats. There's some banana candy too. The fruitiness stayed well until it turned less sweet in about 10/15 seconds with a wave of honey green tea, nice pear peel and citrus zest.

      Banana candy, longan shell, green tea, vanilla ice cream, and hay all blended together. Slightly bittersweet.

    Blind tasting: very enjoyable dram with good development. Give it some time in your glass!

      Malty sweet with a subtle mineral edge at first, with floral and grassy nuances. After some breathing sweet and fruity notes come to the front, this surely is a mature malt!

      Fresh spices like ginger and cardamom at the front, and an okay dustiness and a mineral touch at the back. Just as on the nose, the sweetness follows: kiwi fruits, peach and pineapple. The mouthfeel is thick, oily and a bit waxy even. Good stuff!

      Rather spicy with caramel, apples and grapefruits.

    I seem to find this less exuberantly fruity than other reviewers, but it certainly grew on me with time in the glass. Classic, long-term, ex-bourbon-cask-matured whisky that scores extra points for depth and development.

      More herbal and dry than I had hoped, initially. Loose tobacco, chervil, thyme, myrrh. Assam tea. After a while (and with the help of a splash of water) it gets going and adds a fudgy creaminess, beginning to ooze vanillin, coconut, sunflower oil, and liquid caramel. The fruits are shy but noticeable and include apricot, banana, and mango, all drenched in honey.

      This is where the fun really starts. Very good mouthfeel, oily and thick, with a candied / pastry-like side that keeps getting stronger with more time in the glass. Croissants, brioche, crème caramel… The fruitiness is becoming more pronounced as well, tending more toward ripe papaya and melon now. Extremely satisfying.

      Dried herbs, vanilla-and-caramel custard, honey, coconut milk, apricot yoghurt. Still very fatty/oily.

    Part of Thuisfestival 7. I’d expect more of this one unfortunately,
    • Nose
      A good nose. Quite some depth and layers. Grassy nose, Powdered sugar, almond and a chemical sweetness. Faint caramel, vanilla, fresh green herbs and charcoal.
    • Taste
      Full and sweet, loads and loads of sweetness. A good bite upon arrival. Unfortunately I think that the flavor is too one dimensional. Lots of artificial sweetness and not much room for more flavors.
    • Finish
      Medium to long. Again loads of artificial sweetness translating to caramel and vanilla. Besides that some oak shavings, en relatively strong spices. After that again the sweetness is what remains.

      It’s certainly not bad, it’s just not my style. A little to one dimensional after 26 years inside the cask and that’s a pitty.

    A very nice bottling by Whiskynerds. According to some sources this should be a Glenfarclas, but it's profile is unrecognizable to me.

      Delicate, grassy and fruity. Clear notes of freshly cut gras and green houses (almost reminiscent of some Littlemills), shortbread cookies, subtle notes of vanilla, glazed apple, dried apricot and whiffs of pineapple. Toffee and butterscotch, slightly nutty with some older wood notes at the back.

      Oily and creamy in the mouth, vanilla, shortbread, cut gras, dried fruits, baked fruits, slightly tropical, caramel and toffee, walnuts, a mild and balanced spiciness, some wood dust.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Medium length: vanilla butter, shortbread, grassy, juicy tropical fruits, mild sweet liquorice, a slightly drying spiciness. Very pleasant.
