Thick and sweet like syrup is the first thought
Then it gets oily, sweet and at the same time a bit salty, exactly what I like about Pulteney
Fresh rolls at the bakery on Saturday morning
I like to eat a pretzel stick with butter and honey in the morning ????
    Exactly like that ????
I can still find ripe apricots, caramel at the end
Great stuff I think I need another one for bad times ????????????

Old Pulteney 2008 - 2020, 11 years, Signatory Vintage (for whisky.de). 56.4% alc. Maturation: unknown, finally maturing for 22 months in Oloroso sherry barrel no.1

Nose: syrupy, very sweet and spicy. Dark berries in a damp cellar, strawberry jam, rock sugar. Dried fruits are also included. Spices get stronger, a lot of sherry aromas and a little sulfur. The nose is already very massive and you can take a lot of time. The alcohol is well integrated.
Palate: Again the fruit, the sweetness not quite as strong. Dried strawberries, mushy raspberries, malt and cane sugar. This is paired with oak, a touch of espresso and cocoa.

Finish: medium long and dry. The fruit aromas come up again, especially sweet cherries, then the whisky says goodbye with dark chocolate, yes, almost dry cocoa powder.

Conclusion: I have no idea how the whisky was before the 22-month finish, the distillery character of the original bottlings is definitely masked, the finish was almost a little too long. All in all, you get a very exciting and not that easy pay pulteney here.

85/100 points (tasted in 2021). I thank Helge Biering for the rehearsal. www.notesofmalt.com

Sweet, slightly fresh malt with some nice flavors that somehow don't go together for me but are still interesting and leave a tasty impression.
A little vanilla and malt mixes with ahoi shower and maritime notes. In addition, fruity apricots with a nice salty, long finish.

At first I thought: Wtf, seriously? Another fail like the over-finished dark soup Auchentoshan?

The aroma was really penetrating and took me back to less pleasant childhood memories. Maybe it's because of this previous experience? Nevertheless, in terms of taste it fits quite well and you somehow get used to the aroma. Overall not as bad as initially assumed (thank God), but I'm glad I only bought one sample.

Maybe I'm just in a strange shape for the day, I'll give him another chance.

    Until then: nothing for me.

Whoa what is that ?? So many violent / strange / uncomfortable things in one heap, I have to sort that out first. It smells like the old bottle of Osborne Medium Dry Sherry that opened for years in my parents' living room cupboard. One to one! Musty, stale, stale. As a child I sniffed it every now and then. Back then it was already a rather repulsive smell. Quite disgusting to be honest. Then add a touch of sulfur? Can this be? My sulfur repertoire is still very limited. Above everything lies this heavy and extremely musty dark red fruit note. Fermented berries and plums, mushy and rotten apples. In the background there might be a hint of dried raspberries, vanilla and chocolate. But is covered again immediately. It's pretty exhausting! Where's the Pulteney freshness that I usually find extremely tasty in combination with sherry? I don't know ... Nevertheless: It actually reminds me (as the only positive statement) of the smell of a bottle of sherry!

Better. After I added a little water, the whole thing comes across as a lot creamier and fresher! Red fruits, light berry notes, delicate fresh herbal notes, some chocolate and just a touch of mustiness. Much better! I usually find sherry mustiness extremely desirable, but that kind of mustiness on the nose just wasn't appealing. A little vanilla is added, the fruits do not look too fresh and 'modern', but are balanced by this now slightly musty sherry note. Actually quite tasty.

Quite a lot of chocolate, delicate dry herbal notes and slightly spicy-tart wood notes. Yes, that fits, nothing is conspicuous or even intrusive here. Smooth transition, nicely integrated alcohol. Sounds pretty slow and with a delicate tartness. Also comes out a bit dry and delicately woody. Still balanced. Fits.

The nose reveals that something sweet, jam or syrup is coming soon. Strawberries and then it becomes slightly mineral, mussels, lime.
The alcohol is very well integrated.

Water adds a little mint, the finish goes back and the actual distillate comes more into focus. Lastly, wood polish in the distance and some brown sugar.

Here, too, at the beginning syrup, strawberry jam, dried cherries, then heat.

That was too much water, it can't take much and gets thin quickly. Again from the beginning.
Slightly bitter wood notes and warm toast are added.
    • Finish
      88 88
First sweet, but quite short, then hot, spicy and surprisingly dry.

water thins everything down, so it is best avoided

sweet sherry fruits, honey and brown sugar.. quite simple, really, but nothing offends.
    • Taste
      88 88
sweet and caramel-latte salty.. syrup-thick, but not syrup-sweet.. very nice snd warming, coating the mouth.. more tasty, than complex, but that was to be expected
    • Finish
      87 87
spicy, dry and a small bitter note to compensate for the sweetness in the taste make for a harmonious and very drinkable dram.. the sweet and salty combination echoes for a long time!
