Glen Scotia SMWS 93.134 Right Hand of Darkness, 2011 distilled. 8yo. 59.9%. Well it's not dark like the name. A fairly pale yellow. Aroma is noticeable from a distance. Intense. Marmalade on toast from afar. Up close it's turmeric-spiced mango. Touch of bubblegum - faint. Suggestions of banana bread and teacake. Increasingly teacake and mince pie. Menthol later on. I might have called it "Mince pie toothpaste" if I were on the SMWS naming panel, based on the aroma. Taste is fairly hard-edged and untamed up front, but nice too. There's vanilla and biscuit and lots of peat smoke. Softens on the second sip but the impressions are the same. The peat is a little fossil fuel like. Bit of astringent charcoal like Talisker. The first impression was quite good but there is a building acrid note which is a real shame. The nose was promising. Perhaps slightly younger than suits it. A little drop of water helps it out. 3.35/80

    SMWS notes:

The dark side of Campbeltown! A wonderful abundance of mint, fruit sorbets and a thrilling and deft web of peat that never dominates but always hangs in the background. Layered complexity, baked banana, marzipan - unusual and extremely appealing. Over time it develops a more maritime edge full of seashore bluster, shellfish, pebbles and sea greens. Water brings pick and mix sweeties, molten marshmallows, root beer floats and swimming pools. Aged medical tinctures, salted honey and antiseptic-soaked bandages. In the mouth it is warming, the peat is a little elevated and texture is dense, layered and thrilling. Notes of heather tea, fresh linen, salted liquorice, bouillon stock and mint tea. Reduction delivered a silkier mouthfeel. More minerals, more flint smoke, surf-washed rocks in an oil spill, fermenting sourdough and wispy bonfire smoke. Wonderful!
