    Perfect stuff. Cask 700559
    • Nose
      92 92
      Sweet smoke, sweet raisins
    • Taste
      93 93
Again a steep wall of sweet wood fire smoke, very Lagavulinish, and soft, sweet Sherry in the back; not oversherried, just suppporting the smoke. A minty freshness follows.
    • Finish
      90 90
As above, not any bitterness at aĺl (another analog cask 700583 which might be even the same new make is def much more adstringent). A really brilliant Ledaig out of an impeccable cask.

Yep, it's nice and dirty. I like it. With water it becomes more palatable, sweeter and fruity. The refill sherry barrel is hard to guess - but it doesn't bother either. It's not easy drinking. Good malt!
    • Nose
      88 88
A dark yellow color in the glass and isolated streaks and drop formation on the edge of the glass. First without water. Smoke has a slightly phenolic appearance at the beginning and is like cold ash in a furnace. After that, the smoke becomes sweeter and more sour - towards smoked meat. After a few minutes, grilled pineapple and peach will show up. As well as herbs like sage and thyme. Generally a nice dirty overall grade. Influences from the sherry barrel are superficially not recognizable. With water, the smell becomes rounder overall. The sweet flavors are picking up speed. The smoke decreases in intensity.
    • Taste
      87 87
Immediately a lot of smoke and peat. A nice mouthfeel. A clear caramel sweetness combined with a citrus note. Spices from the nose also in the mouth. Oak shows up - a bit tingly and peppery. For 58.5% alcohol is very well integrated. Can be enjoyed pure. With water, the grilled fruits are now also more distinct in taste.
    • Finish
      86 86
The smoke and peaty aromas combine more with the oak in the end. The lemon from the taste turns into grapefruit. At the very end, the ash from the nose lingers for a longer period of time.

First of all: The sherry influence would not have been blind to me. I would rather compare it to a pure ex-bourbon cask. In a direct comparison to barrel 900153 from 2005, it doesn't see any country, but it is also a completely different taste profile.
The 110 EUR issue price is completely exaggerated in my opinion, there will also be comparable Ledaigs for 70-80 EUR in 2020.
    • Nose
      85 85
You can clearly see the Ledaig, some light-colored fruit, strong smoke, some spices and herbs.
    • Taste
      83 83
Quite straightforward, strong smoke, a little sweetness, a hint of nuts.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium-long finish, the barrel strength and the smoke come to the fore.

Right at the start there is a good portion of smoked ham. I smell spices and nuts before it turns into grassy, almost herbaceous. Now the malt is sweet and reminds of light fruits, orange comes to my mind. I notice some leather and salt in the background. The smoke is always present. I find a delicate citrus note in the wide range of flavors.

Smoke is also dominant in the mouth, sometimes it has a slightly medicinal effect. The 58.5% stimulate the flow of saliva. The Ledaig is now sweet and tastes of brown sugar and fruits like plums and apricots. I also find some salted nuts in the taste profile.

Medium length and warm! Sweet and spicy, getting a little dry.

  5. Whisky-Connaisseur did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

This fourth bottling from the series "The War of the Peat" lives up to its name. An intense, rich, spicy and peaty Ledaig, which also knows how to skilfully show off its sweet and fruity sides. Fans of bold sherry cask whiskies will not get their money's worth here, as the influence of the Spanish liqueur wine is very subtle here. But that does not have to be a disadvantage.

I thank whic (Whiskycircle) for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Peat immediately rises to the nose with typical notes of phenols. Fresh and powerful with soot and smoked bacon. Then sweet vanilla cream appears with fruity notes of plums and some figs, followed by a hint of salt in the background. Overall, the sherry cask influence is very subtle. The high alcohol content is noticeable but not pungent.
    • Taste
On the palate first a nice sweetness of vanilla, apricot and malt sugar. Then strongly warming and spicy with black pepper, almost chili, and dry oak. Creamy notes of plum compote emerge, accompanied by peat and ash. Overall oily and still sweet.
    • Finish
The finish is long-lasting, creamy and warming, characterised by ash, peat smoke, oak, nutmeg, cloves and subtle dark chocolate.

With water: After adding water, the nose becomes more intense and prickling, with significantly more peaty notes, smoked bacon, even a hint of cowshed aroma. The sweetness is somewhat pushed into the background. At first sweet on the palate, but then a chili-like pungency takes over. Strongly spicy and warming, accompanied by dry oak, nutmeg and allspice. Only later do sweet and fruity aromas of malt sugar, vanilla and plum appear. The finish is still long, slightly sweet with plum, very oily and warming with a touch of peat.
