  1. Malzbrenner scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

An Cnoc, 24 years old, with 46% ABV, and available in 2020 for a more than reasonable price. It is high time that the whisky comes in a glass to show whether it can pass the taste test.

And it can, perhaps not as a mainstream whisky but as a great representative of an exciting taste approach. And let's be honest: who wants to be everybody's darling?

First a fruity impression on the nose. Here you can find aromas of fresh fruits: red currants, raspberries, pure claws, blood oranges and apples; also fresh walnuts and hazelnuts, cinnamon, coriander. Sherry is also available, but it does not dominate the aroma profile but acts as a reserved companion with elegance and finesse.
    • Taste
      90 90
On the palate a fruity, sweet mix of a much younger looking whisky. A wonderful citrus note gives the An Cnoc lightness, sherry brings it elegance while the spice of the wood provides the necessary volume. Black chocolate, ginger, nuts, bitter almond, white pepper and a strong mint set accents and diversify the aromas. Definitely a whisky that is good for a little more time in the glass.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long finish, mouth watering, with mint, elegant sweetness and a spicy finish. It's great how much the salivation is maintained and how it keeps bringing out new nuances.

  2. KyotoLefty scored this whisky 90 points Expert Junior

Appearance: Deep amber-orange, leggy and viscous.

Nose: Very rich malt, light tobacco notes, oak, caramel, vanilla, walnuts, bit of wax. Spice like ginger or cardamon, light citrus and stone fruit.

Palate: Oaky, honey, caramel, vanilla, tobacco, malt sugar, leather, lots of age coming through. Needs a bit of water to mellow it.

Finish: Somewhat tannic and bitter, with honey notes. After water, more sweetness and vanilla.

With Water: Few drops. With the alcohol a bit milder, the malt and fruit flavors come out better.

Overall: Lovely age on this, the nose is simply wonderful. The flavor is not quite as magnificent, but with some water to calm it down it is quite great. Wonderful spicy oak, wonderful malt.

    N: light, malty, grassy, grain.

G: oily, creamy, malty sweetness, but also tingling wood.

A: a bit hotter, then swivel to the sweetness before some pepper comes back.

I like it a lot, there is a lot there and it is beautifully varied.

The nose is completely on the fruity side and offers intense aromas in good balance. Very oily and spicy on the palate. What is interesting about this whisky is the finish, which from my point of view is worth discovering.
The final AnCnoc of a tasting series consisting of the 12, 18 and 24yo.
This 24yo. is to be emphasized in any case. The distillery character is apart from the mainstream. I really liked the ambivalence between nose and palate and the multi-layered finish with wide scope for interpretation - July 31, 2021

Even with the 24yo. it takes some time for the grain note to give way and make room for sour, fruity aromas. Sometimes gooseberry, star fruit, citrus notes, some of which develop sweetish in the direction of mandarin and bitter in the direction of grapefruit, interesting interplay. Over time, the malt becomes more oily and essential, orange oil, tea tree oil, menthol, with a mixture of herbs and spices in the background
    • Taste
      89 89
Spreads oily around the mouth, very sweet, malty and spicy, malt candy, gastric bread, the oily texture continues for a long time, pepper sharpness, very voluminous, can be chewed very well
    • Finish
      90 90
Very long, herbs, thyme, lemongrass, mouthwashing and very active, sweet-bitter interplay, at the end menthol and broad oak, mysterious

Those who take their time will be rewarded. Even with increasing (hand) warmth, more and more happens in the glass.
Impatient people or people with cold hands can breathe into the glass several times to elicit its aromas more quickly. It is really very astonishing how versatile this malt is and what complexity it offers if you give it the necessary space.
    • Nose
Takes time and warmth to open.
At room temperature it is only very closed at the beginning and only delicate citrus notes can be heard, together with a light oak spice. The alcohol is well integrated and tingles easily in the nose if you put it deep into the glass. In this state it still shows strong parallels to 16-year-old An Cnoc, who matured exclusively in bourbon barrels.
As the temperature becomes warmer, the interplay of aromas becomes even more complex. The citrus notes fade away, it becomes softer and fuller: honey, vanilla, pineapple, leather, flower meadow, heather, speculoos spices.
    • Taste
Full and oily body, strong start with tasty pepper. Lime, orange, ginger, honey, oak seasoning, pineapple, beeswax, dried flower mixture that is used to spice up salads.
    • Finish
Medium to long, warm and comfortable. Sweet oak flavor. You can still fish tasty drops from every corner of your mouth.
