  4. KB201 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The famous 10 year old Laphroaig has an extremely smoky aroma with hints of seaweed and sea. It is one of the most intense Islay malts.

  5. Kilo1 scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

It seemed to me sweeter, more empty than a dozen of 2010-15. Less interesting option

If you taste old laphroaigs this is a shame.
I've heard someone call this firewater. And I think that's a great name for this laphroaig.
    • Nose
N: medicinal, wet charcoal, plasters, saltiness, ash, hospital air, iodine. Wet rotting wood.
    • Taste
P: macadamia nuts, salted cashew nuts, smoke, medicinal, hansplast,
    • Finish
F: ash, iodine, shorter than you hope can such a whisky, bitter lemon, pepper

There is not too much to say for me, the properties smoky, sweetish-medicinal-phenolic, salty but also sweet fit really very well in my opinion. Whether it is charcoal or campfire smoke is more dependent on your own reception. Unfortunately, I don't really find fruit, so I lack a bit of variety. Unfortunately, it also seems a little weak with its 40%, for me it just lacks a bit of depth. More percentages like the Talisker 10 or Ardbeg Ten might be helpful. Long finish.
I like the 10 CS a lot better.

Get this whisky, like right now. As far as affordable peaty whiskies go, this is one to get. I personally thing Laga 16 is better, but that is more than double the price, so there's that.

The Ardbeg 10 and the Wee Beastie (really ike this one) are also great introductory peaty whiskies, but considering this more than 10 euros cheaper here in Belgium, the choice is fairly easy.

  12. coldsun scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Peaty smoke, salt, iodine, marine, prunes, old wood, honey and citric finish.

  13. jvanopstal scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

A strong and high phenolic whisky. Probably the strongest Islay whisky I've ever tasted so far. Very nice
    • Nose
Strong and peaty with a medicinal character and a bit of vanilla
    • Taste
Full mouthfeel with medicinal peat and a bit of vanilla sweetness
    • Finish
      Medium long with medicinal peat

  14. coldsun scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Typical for Laphroaig peaty smoke, medicine, iodine, sea salt.

    • Nose

Clean ash smoke and little swetness
    • Taste
      83 83
Quite simple but in a good way, coal.. lots of smoky coal from campfire, sweetness of pear, and some liquorise. Little weak and would do good with 48% like some others they have in core range
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium, strong clean smoke that lingers on longer than expected. Great dram!

Peat, peat, peat first. A piece or a slice of ham. Something industrial, oh no just iodine. A smell of A&E ward: Antiseptic stuff, and freshly washed clothes, linen.

Salt - a different notion than what you get smelling Ardbeg 10Y, Port askaig 8Y. Interesting but positive.
Vanilla, cardboard, fresh unpolished oak, grass.
    • Taste
      83 83
Bit thin, bit watery. Peppery heat, caramel sweetness, salty.
Drop of honey and pear. Peat.
    • Finish
      84 84
Finish is the king here! Not a bad malt at all, but for 40% just lingers and lingers. Surprising.

I still like the taste of Laphroaig 10, and find the familiar iodine, woodsmoke, and medicinality, but the 40 % bottling strength doesn't work at all. It's surprisingly watery compared to just about any indie Laphroaig I've had in the last 5 years or so. I'm strongly of the mind that 40 % ABV is a relic from the times distillates tasted full and heavy even at that strength, but modern distillates, even from this distillery known for its heavy, phenolic output, just don't work at this ABV at all.

  27. lincolnimp scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

This is the only 2020 bottle listed on here but I thought I would try this one after the utterly rubbish HP 12 year. I have tried the latest Laphroaig select which is also rubbish but not had the Laphy 10 for while. Good to see that there is still recognisable quality there but not as good as maybe 10 years ago where it had more body and depth of profile.
This still wakes your taste buds up but could not drink a lot of it, certainly not a session dram for me but one to spend a bit of time with for sure.

Very good core range bottle from Laphroaig, the quality is high with no cask gimmicks here.
