    **Commando**

BYOB-C is pronounced ‘biopsy’ and actually means Bring Your Own Bottle Club, but they recently launched a fun new series ‘What if BYOB-C Meant Something Else’ in which they launched their first ‘Build Your Own Bearded Commando’ a little while a go, a wonderful Speyside whisky with a GI Joe action figure on the label. With only 45 bottles, it was gone in the blink of an eye. Now the second Commando has been released, in which the creator of the label took his inspiration in the cargo shorts from the film 13 Hours, the Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. It’s again a secret Speysider, this time from 1993 which means it was 26 years old when bottled. Unfortunately the number of bottles is again very limited and thus again gone in a flash.

Dark and sweet, super fruit and sugared, lightly waxy nose that greets meet from the moment I poured it in my glass. A truckload of candied sugar is joined by some sniffing tobacco and milk chocolate and softly seasoned on some nutmeg. Some roasted chestnuts and popcorn with caramel. This is a liquid dessert.

It’s syrupy on the tongue, you can almost chew it! Immediately honeysweet and pretty feisty on nutmeg, cloves and black pepper. The fruit is much more outspoken now. I get dried apricots, gooseberries, candied orange peel and nectarines. Brésilienne nuts and rum-raisins. The sherry clearly put its foot down. It becomes somewhat dry towards the end.

The finish is medium long, very spicy and drying.

This is another one of those delicious Speysiders as we’ve seen pop up in the last few months, but I’ll never grow tired of this profile. Simply fantastic stuff.

Tasted this whisky h2h with the Secret Speyside 1994 (WB 166991). Yes they are different but how express the small differences?

Both are secret Speysiders but which distillery? In case of Sherry and Speyside you might think Glenfarclas, but to me this is not a Farclas. Also no Glenallachie or Glendronach; on the other hand I might be completely wrong of course.
    • Nose
Compared to its sister barrel this has a deeper and more dominant sherry nose. I like the freshness in the 166991 dram; as such this one has a 1 point lower score on the nose.
    • Taste
Color is slightly darker than its sister barrel. For the rest the taste is pretty similar. Overripe fruit, raisins in combination with full blown sherry flavors. Some tobacco indeed.
    • Finish
Medium long finish. Not so much difference of flavors in the finish compared to the taste.

Conclusion: yes a sherry bomb, but different from others and a damn good one.

clean clothes left to dry in the wind.. clean is the main word here, a very clean nose.. shy sherry.. red fruits make an entrance (what a dram!).. buttery and creamy, like smoking a Dove bar.. they don’t make strawberry jam like they used to in Scotland!
    • Taste
      88 88
spicy heather honey dripping over fried bananas.. i know it’s Speyside, but i hear Ben Nevis calling.. slightly metallic and flirting with bitter, but sweetness and age wins in the end.. he is an old man, he’s allowed to have his quirks
    • Finish
      87 87
butyrique, almost like a rhum.. sweet and heavy.. wish it had more nuance.. in the end, the legs on the glass look like elephants’s elongated feet in that Dali painting

    • Nose
Dried fruits, raisins and figs. A hint of tobacco. Then it goes towards stewed forest fruits, a mixture of blueberries and blackberries. This is followed by a pinch of honey and nutmeg. A touch of oak too. Later also an earthy note and blood oranges.
    • Taste
Blueberries and honey. Oranges. A hint of milk chocolate and caramel toffee. A touch of oak here as well, which is followed by a bunch of spices, such as crushed black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.
    • Finish
Mid-long to long, somewhat drying, a little bit of oak, black pepper and it’s a bit earthy again. Toffee too.

  9. BYOB-C vault did not rate this whisky Member Junior

Besides the Secret Speyside 1994 and the Glen Elgin 1998, this is the third collaboration with Klubb23 of BYOB-C's frontman Dominic.

In this label we go for cargo shorts, based on an image from 13 Hours, secret soldiers of Benghazi.
    • Nose
      chocolate, tobacco, refined sugar, sherry
    • Taste
baked bread, black roasted raisins, Brazil nuts
    • Finish
      medium lang
