[June, 2020] Oops, he did it again: Dino released another mysterious malt...

...which seems to be some kind of double maturation with refill bourbons casks at the beginning and a sherry butt to marry the different malts (for at least three years, otherwise it could not be called "matured in a sherry butt"). Both malt and sherry flavours are on par and clearly identifyable which is rather unusual if this was a full 18-years sherry maturation (and by the way: Why should someone blend new makes from different distilleries into one sherry butt? I never heard of such a practice).

Nonetheless, this is easy quaffable stuff for all lovers of modern (not too heavy) sherried drams for reasonable bucks. The distilleries are hard to guess, could be a Glenrothes or a Tamdhu given the malt's profiles.

[May, 2021] I re-tasted this dram tonight and it seems this malt greatly benefits from oxidation in an almost empty bottle. Tonight I like it even better and increase my score to 89 points but I leave the detailed ratings as they were with the first tasting. This is excellent quaffable stuff at a reasonable price, and surprisingly still available (a good friend who tasted this dram at my cellar immediately bought a bottle last week).
    • Nose
      88 88
The colour is tawny and the nose offers a typical modern sherry profile. It is quite punchy for 46.1% and in a blind setting I would have guessed an abv significantly above 50%. There are a lot of spices in the mix (peppers, chili) beside the young sherry aromas. Upon breathing additional waxes, floral notes and honeys pop up while the sherry retreats somewhat. A fine nose without off-notes, indeed.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is quite comparable with all three malt, sherry and wooden flavours in good balance. It is nicely chewable but not layered with again many different hot spices, toffee-notes, waxes and leathery impressions beside the winey sherry notes. No flaw or off-note, but (almost) no fruits either. After some chewing delicious notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans join in which I like very much (do you remember the chocolate-coated coffee beans they served at some cafés years ago? ).
    • Finish
      87 87
The dram arrives a little hot (peppery) and coating on the palate with a minor drying feeling (from the wine, not the wood). The finish is of medium length and turns even more drying on the sherry notes with some herbal impressions added. There is a minor bitter feeling towards the very end which is not distracting at all. Water turns the nose sour-winey and the taste more dark chocolatey - I like this dram both neat and somewhat reduced to about 40% abv.

Spicy and voluminous, grassy with a lot of herbs and spices, the initially existing fruity note fades away relatively quickly, slightly tart and spicy wood tones dominate with lots of herbs and spices.

    • Nose
Reddish amber shimmers in the glass, a thick and oily streak sticks to the glass wall of my Premium Snifter. Abrasion from orange peel is voluminous, hints of dates and raisins are added, slightly floral and grassy spices and meadow herbs are added. A creamy, gentle sherry aroma rises, citrus fruits flash, spicy wood tones appear minimally, crumbs of dark chocolate end in a bouquet of fresh herbs and spices. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, I'm curious what the blend has to offer in terms of taste ...
    • Taste
Tart wood tones in combination with fresh herbs and tart citrus fruits pour spicy over the tongue. The flow of saliva is suddenly stimulated, gentle spiciness massages the tongue, caramel and chocolate flash, as do viscous honey and hints of wax. Sweetness plays with emerging spiciness, the second sip is also wooden tart with a fine pepper note. In the background lie honey, wax, citrus fruits, herbs, mint and a touch of menthol ... The taste and aftertaste are blurred with intense wood elements.
    • Finish
Tart, with a minimal smoky note, spicy oak tones stick to the palate, floral and slightly grassy herbs and menthol are added, hints of cough syrup and herb drops, abrasion of tart grapefruit and an intensifying hazelnut aroma. The aftertaste lingers on the palate for a long time before dark hazelnuts with drops of cough syrup spread all over the mouth and finish off creamy.

Sniff whiskey! The nose is a dream with 90 pts. Unfortunately, the whiskey does not keep what the nose promises on the palate.
The finish makes up ground again.

A very full, voluminous nose strikes you from the glass. Zero alcohol, zero stinging, or even a hint of menthol. Fairly clear and defined notes of a sherry aging. Plums and raisins strike through, but everything is also backed with fresh fruit. The raisins turn into grapes. Nice barrel notes come through but never tart or bitter. Wonderful nose
    • Taste
      83 83
Zero alcohol again. The start is relatively weak. In contrast to this wonderful nose, it looks almost a bit thin on the palate. Fruits can only be seen. Most likely a red apple. The whole thing is really fresh. Over time, some sweetness comes through. Otherwise the barrel notes are a bit bitter. Unfortunately, a disappointment after the nose.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is stronger again. Here, the bitter tones come into their own. Some pepper, wood and also chilli. A slight bitterness spreads while some cinnamon and cardamom emerge.

A good malt with a sherry influence. It actually does exactly what you expect from it. Doesn't really do anything wrong, but doesn't inspire now either.

A lovely blended malt with sweet fruit aromas from the sherry butt. Not overly complex but pleasant to drink. I liked the interplay of sweetness, bitter orange and dry cocoa aromas here.

I thank deinwhisky.de for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Nice sweetness of dark fruit, dates and sherry aromas rise to the nose, followed by tart orange, oak spice and some dark chocolate.
    • Taste
Very sweet on the palate with a sticky fruit jam. Then increasingly warming with oak spice, cinnamon, a touch of pepper and nutmeg. Then honey sweetness with a slightly bitter orange, followed by dark chocolate and hazelnut aromas.
    • Finish
The finish is long lasting, creamy with fruit jam and slightly warming. Becomes slightly dry towards the end with cocoa and fine nut aromas.

With water: After adding a few drops of water, the dark fruit sweetness remains, accompanied by Seville oranges and a touch of tobacco. Sweet and prickling on the palate with blood oranges and much more cocoa notes. The finish is slightly shorter with dry notes of oak, cocoa and hazelnut.

The nose is first class but very thin on the palate and in the finish where the aromas are only hinted at. Still a good drop, in any case drinkable and not overlaid - 27.03.2021
    • Nose
      89 89
Very voluminous and musty nose, red grapes, raisins, strong and expressive but not in the sense of alcohol strength but aromas, slightly sour, unripe plum, grassy note, tobacco
    • Taste
      84 84
Watery texture, hardly any fruit aromas, more of a fruit spritzer, light milk chocolate, marzipan potato, dry, the barrel only flashes briefly
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium length, grape, ginger, fruity bitter aromas, fruit tea

Good sherry blended molt from Dino. I can't guess the profile, but it doesn't look like glenrots or tamdu. Spicy, drinkable, though it seems stronger. 22-21.5-22-21.5
