[June, 2020] Oops, he did it again: Dino released another mysterious malt...

...which seems to be some kind of double maturation with refill bourbons casks at the beginning and a sherry butt to marry the different malts (for at least three years, otherwise it could not be called "matured in a sherry butt"). Both malt and sherry flavours are on par and clearly identifyable which is rather unusual if this was a full 18-years sherry maturation (and by the way: Why should someone blend new makes from different distilleries into one sherry butt? I never heard of such a practice).

Nonetheless, this is easy quaffable stuff for all lovers of modern (not too heavy) sherried drams for reasonable bucks. The distilleries are hard to guess, could be a Glenrothes or a Tamdhu given the malt's profiles.

The colour is tawny and the nose offers a typical modern oloroso sherry profile. It is quite punchy for 46.1% and in a blind setting I would have guessed an abv significantly above 50%. There are a lot of spices in the mix (peppers, chili) beside the traditional sherry aromas. Upon breathing additional waxes, floral notes and honeys pop up while the sherry retreats somewhat. A fine nose without off-notes, indeed.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is comparable with malt, sherry and wooden flavours in good balance. It is nicely chewable but not layered with again many different hot spices, toffee-notes, waxes and leathery impressions beside the sherry. No flaw or off-note, but (almost) no fruits either. After some chewing delicious notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee beans join in which I like very much (do you remember the chocolate-coated coffee beans they served at some cafés years ago? ).
    • Finish
      87 87
The dram arrives a little hot (peppery) and coating on the palate with a minor drying feeling (from the sherry, not the wood). The finish is of medium length and turns even more drying on the sherry notes with some herbal impressions added. There is a minor bitter feeling towards the very end which is not distracting at all. Water turns the nose sour-winey and the taste more dark chocolatey - I like this dram both neat and somewhat reduced to about 40& abv.

A lovely blended malt with sweet fruit aromas from the sherry butt. Not overly complex but pleasant to drink. I liked the interplay of sweetness, bitter orange and dry cocoa aromas here.

I thank deinwhisky.de for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Nice sweetness of dark fruit, dates and sherry aromas rise to the nose, followed by tart orange, oak spice and some dark chocolate.
    • Taste
Very sweet on the palate with a sticky fruit jam. Then increasingly warming with oak spice, cinnamon, a touch of pepper and nutmeg. Then honey sweetness with a slightly bitter orange, followed by dark chocolate and hazelnut aromas.
    • Finish
The finish is long lasting, creamy with fruit jam and slightly warming. Becomes slightly dry towards the end with cocoa and fine nut aromas.

With water: After adding a few drops of water, the dark fruit sweetness remains, accompanied by Seville oranges and a touch of tobacco. Sweet and prickling on the palate with blood oranges and much more cocoa notes. The finish is slightly shorter with dry notes of oak, cocoa and hazelnut.

A good malt with a sherry influence. It actually does exactly what you expect from it. Doesn't really do anything wrong, but doesn't inspire now either.
