    Quick hit review.

    I have yet to find a Caol Ila that disappointed me, and this bottle is no exception. Medicinal and peppery-sweet, the nose features BBQ sauce, dark fruits and fennel. On the palate, strawberry cream, caramel and briny peat smoke are in charge, leading the way into the ashy, mineral and straightforward finish. A spirit-driven Islay malt at an affordable price, underscoring yet again why Caol Ila is my favorite distillery.

    A lovely, warming whisky with a relatively high complexity but lacking a bit of richness.
    • Nose
      Notes of sweet, vegetal peat and pear drops with hints of mush bananas, tinned pineapple, sauerkraut and lemon zest as well. Some honeyed-glazed cereal too.
    • Taste
      A lingering ashiness, and sooty as well, with a quick hit of spices (cracked black pepper and cloves), but also a touch of charred lemon peel, chocolate and peach.
    • Finish
      Slightly briny and spicy. Soft yellow fruits, red apple and a prolonged smokiness.

    Caol Ila sherry cask, always interesting.
    Not as potent as the recent Signatory single casks, but a very nice sherried Islay.

      The young age makes the maritime Islay peat more prominent than the influence from the 3 sherry butts.
      Still some dark and sweet fruit present.
      Salty, cured meat.

      A little thin on arrival but spice and peat kicks in quite quickly and saves the impression.
      Sweet dark fruit with a pinch of salt.
    • Finish

      A little fruit, a little peat, a little sweet...
      Balanced and harmonious finish lasting pretty long with a slow and stable fade.

    - a really good surprise
    - very cool combo between chocolate and smoke
    - you can definitely get one
    - for about 50€ you can't complain, it is anyway

      slightly smoky, salty, spicy
    • Taste
      intense, very smoky attack, but the smoke is beautifully embedded in a sweet note, sweetness, chocolate, is delicious, but you can taste little or nothing of sherry
    • Finish
      medium-long, sweet, chocolaty, smoky finish; medium-long aftertaste

    ... the sherry butts produce a great young but good malt - the typical sherry flavors are missing (probably because of the short maturation time?);
    The youth is particularly evident in the nose, in the taste it then knows how to convince with intense aromas!
    What would a 12-15 year period of maturation have achieved here?

    Caol Ila 7yo, 2012-2020, 1324 bottles, 47.5% 3 sherry casks, Carn Mor Strictly Limited.

    Golden yellow with a hint of orange.

    Aroma is burnt banana bread, seared grapefruit peel, burnt cardboard. Good aroma.

    Taste is hammy, oily sherry vibes against aggressive salt, breathy smoke, faint citrus vibes. Almost a bit of the Ardbeg about this taste-wise. Very mature for the age. Tastes like it's 10 years older.

    A classy whisky that is superb for the age. Breathy chemically burnt wood sort of a smoke. The sherry vibes are only faintly tart and appley. Very tasty on the whole. 3.75/89

    Typical peaty malt, with lots of campfire smoke from nose to finish. It's clearly young and slightly sharp on the palate, compared to the usual 12 y.o. A pleasant dram for peat lovers, but a bit lacking in complexity to make it something truly distinctive from the average Islay malts.

    Great product for a very elegant price. Flowery nose, fruit mash, sweet turf, hibiscus and nutmeg. Taste is elegant with turf again in combination with salt, hint of tobacco. Finish is amazing: long and fluent - very aware... Dusty and oily with some sweet tones and a touch of wax. Wauw!

      Taste is great, but less then the nose - dry with hints of salt, honey and tobacco. Bit kippers (oysters?). Some herbs: like oregano, laurel, mirre,... And again a bit of meat.

      Finish is in my opinion amazing! Fluent and full, bit oily with a hint of wax. Lovely.
