A dram that is almost too easy to drink and well matured for its age. However, although the sherry influence is very present, there is still some noticeable spirit character in this dram. Value (£60) : 6/10
    • Nose
Red berries upfront. Cranberries, rasberries, sour cherries. Some dried plums and figs. A light touch of malt and yeast. Green herbal characters of aniseed and thyme. Burnt caramel and some cocoa as well. Cooling menthol. Sweet Christmas cake spices with cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. Some burnt matchsticks. Ginger and white pepper give this some heat. Some sulphur notes of burnt matches as well at the end.
    • Taste
Slightly viscous. Less tart and much sweeter here than the nose initially suggests. Demarara sugar, honey and toffee. Sweet red berries and stewed fruits. Sight alcohol burn. Liquorice mints. Dark chocolate. Less peppery but some ginger spice. Grapefruits. More baking spices. A slight hazelnut note on the palate that I did not get on the nose. That slight malt note continues onto the palate.
    • Finish
Medium in length. A certain tannic quality on the finish. very drying. and a touch too spicy at first. Then more burnt caramel sweetness. Less malt. A prickle of cracked black pepper. More cooling mint and that liquorice note.

This is a very nervous - or schizophrenic - whisky, rather flat and not overly influenced by the PX hogsheads (which were used only for a very short period, I am afraid). It shows a bit of ex-bourbon maturation (white fruit, menthol, ginger) and a bit of "other maturation" (don't expect a sweet PX feel here).
    • Nose
      80 80
This can't be anything other than a finish - and a short one. A menthol-driven smell from bourbon casks, with vanilla and tinned fruit. Behind that, there is some influence of the PX casks, but only moderately: plum and cola cubes.
    • Taste
      78 78
Medium-bodied, lacking substance. There is some oxidative PX-taste in the background, but far away. It comes with mon cheri (which I find quite artificial) and a bit of toffee, but otherwise it's still a rather fresh dram with melon, vanilla, citrus, menthol and ginger. Gets rather tannic instead of sweet.
    • Finish
      78 78
Still an artificial arrival of mon cheri, fabric softener, combined with melon, spice, menthol and tannins.
