The Ardbeg Wee Beastie is the latest addition to the range.
Good value 5 year old Islay. Untamed smoke, tar, pepper and dark chocolate.

Great entry-level whisky from Ardbeg. But not for people who like smooth whiskys ^^. Strikes hard in taste. Good value for money. In my mouth, however, it is a bit out of round and not so well balanced. You already notice the five years. Definitely worth the money for less than 40 euros!

Intense smoke of burnt charcoal, some tar, hints of maritime notes, light sweetness, slightly spicy, some strong herbs and grains in the background, some salt, minimally fruity (citrus), very delicate vanilla, light aromas of a barbecue sauce
    • Taste
      82 82
brutally spicy attack, strongly smoky after a campfire, peppery, sweet, strong maritime notes, tart, nutty, light citrus fruit aroma, very oily on the tongue, strong herbs, malty, hints of ginger, oak, spicy
    • Finish
      85 85
long, very smoky (campfire and medicinal), strong maritime notes, oak, spicy, hardly any sweetness or fruit, leathery, malty, slightly nutty, slightly bitter

Altough Ardbeg Wee Beastie is not really "a monster of a dram" as stated on the bottle, it is a good whisky from very characteristic distillery.

Nose: smokey with hints of tar, meat, chocolate and variety of fresh and dried fruits.

Taste: ash, even more meat and chocolate, anise, distinct hint of fruits slowly evolve into grapes and oranges

Finish: smoke, ash, salt, pepper, oak

    (Tasted blind)
    APPEARANCE: Golden colour.
NOSE: Ashes, peat smoke, a rather fat and sliglty sweet smoke. Also iodine, salty sea air, sea shore, wet seaweed. In the background green apples, a few drops of lemon. My guess is Caol Ila or Ardbeg, most probably Caol Ila. (88-89p)
TASTE: The ashes and fat, slightly sweet smoke shows up immedieately in the arrival. On the mid palate there's mildblack pepper, some more ashes, a certain sweetness and some salinity. I miss some complexity. A few drops of water doesn't change much. (84p)
EXIT: Exiting on a salt & pepper note, remaining very consistent all the way through the medium long aftertaste. A few drops of water doesn't change much. (83-84p)
OVERALL: A lovely nose, delivering quite rich, unmistakeable Islay notes. Unfortunately it doesn't quite follow up in the mouth, where I find it to be simpler and lacking a bit in complexity or balance. But thanks to the nose it still gets away with a TOTAL SCORE of 85 points.

Untamed and Wild? Well, not really ... I like this young Ardbeg very much, is extremely tasty and "easy drinking" but in my opinion it is guaranteed not to be wild and untamed. Well, maybe a little ... ;-)

    • Nose
Intense caramel with a minimally reddish shimmer rests in the glass while many thick and oily "legs" stick to the glass wall of my Premium Snifter. Cold, fruity smoke rises, caramelized sugar plays with apricots and peaches, red grapes and berries are added. Fresh herbs, slightly floral and grassy with hints of citrus fruits, a touch of peat with maritime influences. Traces of burnt wood and grilled pork belly, slightly salty with a pinch of white pepper. At the moment I am fascinated by the multitude of long and oily "legs" on the glass wall, the Wee Beastie also whets the appetite for the first sip visually ...
    • Taste
The first sip flows surprisingly smoothly and creamy through the mouth, sweet grapes and berries are sprinkled with sugar, only after a few moments does a pleasantly smoky and peaty mouth feel with a fine note of pepper on the tongue. The second sip also looks relatively thin and mild at first, but gains in volume and intensity over time. Slightly burned wood, fly ash, bacon, grilled apricots, salt and pepper, menthol, grapefruit, caramel, and muffled smoke.
    • Finish
An earthy smoky note sticks warmly on the palate, hazelnuts, dark yellow fruit notes, earthy, slightly ashy, brine and a few grains of black pepper rest on the tongue for a long time and exude their wonderful aroma. The aftertaste sounds nutty after what feels like an eternity.

Great young expression of ardbeg. Really nice to get a feel for the distilleries character.

Not bad. However, I don't see why I should resort to this when the Ten still exists. The Wee inevitably looks a bit younger and I don't think he's that beastly either.

Compared to Ardbeg 10 there's less pharmacy and hospital notes, less ash but more smoked meat and bonfire. This dram is also more oily and alcohol does not bite you on the tongue. It's sour and very much like a dry wine. Finishes also bring food-like associations. I'd never say this is a 5 years old whisky :)
