Very surprised with this one. Might be one of my new favourite sherry bangers.

N: sherry, sherry & sherry, figs, nuts, apricots, chocolate, maltyness, some spices, red berries and vanilla with toffee

P: complex, lots of sherry notes, candy, peaches, some spice and some oak notes and in the background vanilla and toffee

F: long and pleasantly sweet and sherried with nutty aftertaste

  7. ffmdino did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    a solid malt; Easy drinking
the finish is poor (may be due to the NAS)
    the PLV is OK
    • Nose
Cardboard becomes less, minimally a metallic note, tart, some leather, slightly red fruit, brown sugar, some caramel, sweetness, more brown apple
late: carpet gum, some Sir Irish Moss, Hanuta

from the 1920s: sparkling, lots of red berries !! (Raspberry?), Damp wood, simple sweet candy, slightly a grassy-earthy note, cake like a biscuit note
    • Taste
      soft, silky
some more raisins, oak, spicy, brown banana, sherry (good), milk chocolate
    • Finish
      short to medium long
warm, some oak, tart, chocolate first whole milk then becomes tart ~55%, overall easy

  10. Bene37 scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

Nose: round and crisp, pickled fruits: pear, apple, plum, cherry, raisins, a few dates and figs; brown sugar, some milk coffee and milk chocolate

Palate: velvety-round, but also a little weak in the beginning, milk chocolate, raisins, a few pickled fruits, some milk coffee, slightly nutty, malty

Finish: short, warm and dry, milk chocolate, dark fruits, light bite

Rating: solid thing. the nose is great, the rest is okay. For 35 euros it is anything but wrong: Sherry aromas (milk chocolate, raisins, pickled fruits) and a malty-crunchy spirit go well together here, even if it lacks depth in his younger years. that's okay.

3cl sample at a very nice tasting by the Good Spirits Company, with Iain Forteath-Angus, Glencadam's Global Brand Ambassador and Master Blender.

The components of this one are between 4 and 8 years old, with the finishing lasting between 12 and 24 months.

Fun facts from the tasting: Glencadam uses Bairds Maltings in Arbroath; they've recently switched barley varietal from Concerto to Laureate; their fermentation is particularly aggressive ("like Krakatoa"); they're filling at 68.5% ABV due to limited warehousing space; the distillery was closed 2000-2003 before Angus Dundee bought it, meaning there's a 3-year production gap working its way through the range.
    • Nose
      86 86
The finishing is fairly well integrated, this is a fine and very nutty nose, with subtle treacle.
    • Taste
      82 82
Pleasant and clean, but nothing special.
    • Finish
      82 82
      Shortish, quite sweet, inoffensive.

Dry, soft, recognizable, beautiful nose with flowers and sweet, somewhat tropical fruit. In the aftertaste of black fruit, you could almost swear that it has matured in port - but that's not true, oloroso it is! Great to break an evening with good friends without going bankrupt. Empty far too quickly and a bottle that shakes my principle of buying only one bottle of an expression. Price/quality yields a bonus point. 84 so.

Nice and easy but still with a layer or two to explore. At the current 33 € worth a try, I think.
    • Nose
      80 80
Soft dried fruit, sweet with a hidden spiciness. With a few drops of water also a bit of fresh fruit and lighter overall.
    • Taste
      81 81
A bit sharp but just for second. Soon it becomes smoother with red berries and dark chocolate. A bit of honey. With water: a little smoother from the beginning and even less sweet.
    • Finish
      80 80
Rather short. Nice vanilla notes. Also a decent sweetness with just a hint of dark chocolate. With water it loses the vanilla notes a little, seems less sweet and slightly bitter notes become more prominent.

    Sherry Oloroso finish, yes,
but the sweetness is modest ...
Let's see how this Glencadam develops ...
    06/16/21
This Glencadam didn't look bad ...
But I'll stick with it, the sherry finish turned out thin ...

During a blind tasting, quite a few people were guessing this to be the 17 yo portwood or even the 19 yo sherry cask finish. When its true identity was revealed, we were obviously happily surprised. What’s funny is that when you know what your nosing and tasting, you automatically start to anticipate and look for things you’d expect to find. So knowing what I have in the glass before me, the youthfulness of this whisky shows itself more than when tasting blind. If anything, some proper good casks went into this...
    • Nose

blind sample): very rich and fruity-spicy. A bomb of red fruit (berries, figs, plums…) and tropical fruit (kiwi, mango). Toffee apple, honey, treacle/toffee, creamy, spices, salty, licorice, some funky cooked fruit. After 10-15 minutes it mellows out a bit. Less pungent and outspoken on the different sensations, everything becomes more integrated.

(opened bottle): Rich, thick, oily sensation, very buttery and caramel-y leaning into a burst of dark sugar and honey. very fruity as well: raspberry, strawberry, blueberries which gives it a vibrant, youthful (not the same as young, mind) touch. Only then I pick up sultana’s and raisins. Very inviting.
    • Taste
      85 85
(blind sample): Yum! Creamy, baking spices, cooked and dried fruits with a Christmas like touch, sweet spices, nutty, soft wood, well-aged with a thick oily mouth feel.
(opened bottle): A thick, oily mouthfeel. The 1st sensation is that of sweetness (sugary and sweet berries) but what follows brings out a salty note and a soft oaky touch. Grainy and cereal-y as well with allspice and baking spices along with icing sugar.
    • Finish
      83 83
(blind sample): spice (nutmeg mostly, perhaps a hint of clove), medium long, with a sugary note and some soft wood
(opened bottle): oily, sweet & salty, hint of oak and wood. The long salty touch lingers on.

Like probably quite a few other users I bought this on a recent special for less than 25 EUR - which makes this bottle a cracking deal, as it comes NCF and uncoloured. The juice itself is not half bad as well, of course not an absolute stunner, but it's very clean, well made and balanced. Don't expect a sherry monster. It's a Glencadam, probably quite young, the distillery character shows and that is fine with me. I must confess though that roundabout 40 EUR would not have prompted me to buy it.
    • Nose
      82 82
Very light and a bit shy at first for the strength, but it opens up after a few minutes. Simple pleasures is the key word here: Just a hint of sherry, some raspberries, a touch of milk chocolate and of sweet plum liqueur complement the distillery character with sweet barley, honey, citrus, wax and vanilla. A beautiful soft menthol note is creeping in after a while. It's nice and a bit on the light side and not too complex, but very pleasurable.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet and fresh attack, youthful, but also silky and very full bodied, which is a nice surprise after the light nose. Now you can really enjoy the interplay between the bright Glencadam fruitiness (peaches, apricots, apples and lime) and the sherry cask (plums, raspberries, raisins, orange zest). It's a light fruit salad (although not a fruit bomb) with a subtle waxiness. In my opinion it's an asset that they didn't let the finish overpower the spirit. In the back of the palate a nutty, spicy oak note appears that leads the way to the finish...
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium and delicate with mixed nuts, raisins and citrus fruits. A very nice daily dram, even though it does not have the crystalline classiness of the 10yo...

The new Reserva Andalucia is nice but won’t soon set your world on fire.
    • Nose
Finished for a minimum of 12 months in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, this is a new release. It’s pretty light and certainly not a sherry bomb. A touch of rhubarb, but then creamy caramel and a bunch of berries (straw and rasp).
    • Taste
Sweet and oily, but not so much vanilla like the 10, but rather sugary and fudge-y. Then also a good amount ripe banana, almost candy-esque at times. A layer of spiciness and nuttiness in the background.
    • Finish
Lingering peanut skins. Red fruits. Finally a slight ashiness. Medium in length.
