Dirk is of course right. This is pure sherried Balvenie and only for legal reasons 'teaspooned'. But who cares, this is just excellent! Amazing that it is still possible to bottle such whisky's in 2020. Together with the Irish 1990 (for Taiwain) the best Archives bottling of 2020. Happy that - as a WB Cask Plan Participant - I was able to purchase a bottle beforehand without a ballot.
    • Nose
Bingo! All the characteristics of classic sherried matured whisky are present. Prunes, dried figs, balsamic vinegar and hints of pipe tobacco. Raisins and nutty maltiness. Also moccha, cigar leafs and pine resin. Some nice dark treacle emerge after a while. May be not overly complex, but it is damned delicious!
    • Taste
Very, very rich and round. The fruit is stewed to death with ripe plum and date mixing with black currant. Dark chocolate, x-mas cake and sultanas as well. Lots of spices of nutmeg and cinnamon. Acacia honey with a perfect combination of tangerines, caraway, orange blossom honey. Leathery notes at the background.
    • Finish
Long and sweet. Raspberry liqueur, some liquorice and fudge. Perfectly balanced, no off notes.

[April, 2021] A quick review of a small sample courtesy of a friend...

...which is a modern sherry monster in the best tradition of the old-school sherry maturations of the past. This was a first class cask seasoned with the finest old Oloroso sherry (and not the cheap young pre-Solera wine which is used to season most of today's casks). In a blind tasting I would have guessed a great sherried dram from the past, matured during the sixties/seventies of the last century. Thanx a lot for the sample, Martin!

The colour is very dark at brown sherry and the nose offers a powerful old-style Oloroso sherry profile without any off-note. There is certainly not a whiff of sulphur but lots of adorable sherry aromas to discover, all that I can imagine in such a classic sherry maturation. The malt is overwhelmed by the power of the wine but it is not completely buried, if I search long enough I can detect some trademark Balvenie notes like honeys and nuts. If a sherry monster owns such a nose I really like it, no doubt.

The taste is dominated by the sherry too, what else? But it is perfect, flawless and old-school sherry hence it is very, very delicious. And as with the nose the malt is not dead and crawls out of its hideaway to offer its honeys, sugars and waxes - if you chew the dram long enough. All the different flavours combine to a tasty chocolate impression after a while which is enriched by spices and herbal wooden notes.
    • Finish

The initial mouthfeel is warming, nicely coating and a little bitter-drying which is absolutely fine with such a sherry monster. The finish is long and and focusses more on the dark chocolatey side of the taste with some bitter-drying wooden notes which again are absolutely okay with such a dram. No flaws that I can find beside the strong wooden notes (which are more or less unavoidable in sherry monsters). Water turns the dram a little smoother and hence even more quaffable but all in all I prefer it neat.

Old style sherry influence, not overpowered though and unique for a Balvenie. As we all know this doesn't contain any Glenfiddich. Who is going around with a teaspoon?

To bad there were only 58 bottles.

I like the nose. It's positively different to most of the other modern style sherry whiskies. Unfortunately the taste is way too woody and bitter for me despite of being sugar coated. Sorry!
    • Nose
Sweet spices, dark sugar, raisins, prune jam, figs, dried exotic fruits.
    • Taste
Drier spices, cloves, allspice, wood, coffee, dark sugar, dried fruits.
    • Finish
Oak spices, pepper, dark sugar, coffee, bitter. With a lot of water a hint of sweetish fruits.

ose: Wow! This is HUGE ! dark, and filled with gunpowder, lots of figs, prune and date juices, balsamic, burnt sugar, glazed meat, tobacco leaves, love the sulfur in this, moist earth and plum juice. It is dark and excellent. One can sniff this stuff for hours.
Palate: big badass old style sherry, with lovely sweetness, and some wood tannins, as well as wine tannins, a bit vinous, lots of stewed fruit, plums, figs all in thick syrup, some mocha, leather, kirsch, dark chocolate, and, wood spices and orange marmalade, maybe even some licorice and black tea leaves.
Finish: drying, the oak is very much present, leather and licorice with some black tea.

Conclusion: What an amazing nose on this whisky!! one can sniff it for hours, it’s just sublime. {but, If you’re not a fan of sulfur, then this might not be for you… } The palate is very good indeed as well but falls short of the nose, and the finish is quite endless. A beautiful whisky, that will get better with time in the glass, and some oxidation in the bottle.
