If only the word "classic" weren't so worn out ... oh, what the hell: a classic and great, older Lagavulin, which the distillery brought out for a slightly different féis ìle this year. From nose to finish, the thing is just a poem.
    • Nose
Intense fruit sweetness of raisins and dried figs on a bed of dry autumn leaves, old wood chips and spicy forest floor. Subtle but haunting smoke. Black Forest ham, roasted orange peel. Jaffa biscuits, milk coffee. The aromas are not urgent, but they are all very closely connected.
    • Taste
Very creamy and soft start. A peat smoke note that doesn't even creep up slowly (after all, the smoke had 20 years to break down), but lies directly on the tongue and completely fills the entire mouth. Dry wood, milk coffee, toffee, marzipan. Raisins, dried figs and dates, old leather, dry tobacco leaves.
    • Finish
Long and slightly dry, but still with a certain viscosity. Very pleasant smoke note, toasted orange peel, marzipan bread, toffee, a little yeast dough, nutmeg and finally a pinch of black pepper.

After the Feis Ile 2020 was unfortunately canceled, the annual special bottling could be ordered online from some well-known distilleries. Diageo limited the bottlings to two bottles per person and only shipped within the UK. After two days the bottles were already sold out ...

Visually, the Lagavulin has a deep amber color and you can see beautiful oily legs in the glass.

      The smell
Unsurprisingly, smoke aromas rise in the nose at first, but not dominantly, but rather subtly and wonderfully harmoniously integrated. These beautifully integrated soft hints of cold ash gradually give way to a distinct sweetness! Wow * smells sweet !!!
I find dried raisins, figs, plum cake with a thick layer of crumble.
The bouquet of the whisky is great and I only realize after a long time that I was lost in my thoughts. I thought of Islay and many wonderful moments with good friends. After what felt like an eternity, the question came up inside me if I shouldn't even try ...?

... let's go! I zip on the glass and think "oh god". Sweet, oily, thick syrup wonderfully smoky, the Lagavulin falls on my taste buds. The smell had announced it, but the taste is going a step further. Everything about candied fruit, forest honey, raisins, figs, plums, blackberries alternate with smoky aromas of glowing logs and light ash. The barrel follows closely with its influence of light leather, tobacco, dry wood and again the sweetness pushes through, but this time more marzipan, toffee and caramel.
The alcohol fits and is neither too concise nor too defensive to not warm. Fine eucalyptus notes announce the end.

This Lagavulin leaves warm and sweet with a slight smokiness. Spicy notes stay on the tongue for an eternity without turning into bitterness.

      Conclusion
Great Lagavulin that is second to none. No wrong notes and to the point.

    ** Digestive Biscuits **

Due to the corona crisis (which will undoubtedly be the word of the year) no Islay Music & Malt Festival this year, but fortunately a special release for Feis Ile 2020 was released. Only problem: Diageo offered them online, but only if you could provide an address in the UK. Just called in a comrade who took the bottles (including Caol Ila's) for me and had them delivered to my front door by courier. Of this Lagavulin - which has matured for no less than 20 years - the 6,000 bottles left outside in less than two days (I honestly thought it was still surprisingly long). The malt matured on a combination of refill hogsheads and both oloroso and PX sherry casks. He is inviting amber with very thick tears.

The nose is surprisingly soft on green herbs, linseed oil, hint of orange peel and a discrete dash of smoke. Hint of dried apricots at an extinguished campfire. But the smoke is really surprisingly soft. Suspiciously soft, even. Reminds me a lot of those typical Scottish Digestive Biscuits (delicious with tea, by the way). After a few minutes, eucalyptus and some red lace candy will appear. I can easily smell this glass for fifteen minutes, because it is delicious. But Lagavulin's DNA is well hidden.

Oh, my, what a body! Oily to almost viscous. And now it is immediately very sweet and very smoky. The nose had not prepared me for this, but on the tongue it really explodes and it is again a textbook example of Lagavulin with those typical shafts and slightly drying. Another sweet as of candied fruit. The smoke is now very big. It makes it nice and warm.

The aftertaste ... you cannot call this aftertaste or finish. This is a Finale with a capital F. Long, warm, dark sweet, light drying, spicy, smoky and everlasting. Absolutely fantastic.

A classic Lagavulin with a dark sweet twist. The nose was delayed, but taste became a bomb and the finish is out of this world. What a wonderful Lagavulin. I hide it in my closet until winter arrives.

    Official notes:

    Nose
Feisty, with initial prickle and a spicy top note. Water brings up those pungent Lagavulin aromas of cake mix, digestive biscuits, linseed oil and eucalyptus. Scented bonfire smoke.

    Body
    Medium to full

    Palate
At natural strength, smooth in texture with an immediately powerful sweet and smoky taste. Waves of smoke, and fruity in the development. Drying lightly. Good at natural strength and also with a drop of water, which makes this a richly textured, sweet and smoky dram.

    Finish
Long, warming and drying, leaving a pleasant smokiness on the breath. Water softens the effect, while still leaving a pleasantly smoky aftertaste.

Elegant sherried peaty nose, but is a bit spirity. Typical Lagavulin. Nothing more, nothing less.
    • Taste
      92 92
Oh, this is quite balanced. A warm and soft entry. Great strength. I tried this side by side with the Feis 2016 and this Feis 2020 is definitely a step up in class. Heavier mouthfeel with better depth. Very elegant, and the sherry is rather well-integrated. Classic modern Lagavulin. I purchased a sample to determine if a full bottle is warranted, and... yes, I am leaning towards buying a bottle. This would have been a must buy if more complex and fruity.
    • Finish
      90 90
The finish is good, but not perfect. It trails off quickly to a rather simple finish. An excellent product nonetheless.

Not quite 92 points but close.

After a bit of debate in my head... I bought 2 bottles from auction. It is a damn good bottle.
