Impressive on the 1st nosing really, also a robust palate and finish, but faded with time. Still a very enjoyable Speyside malt.

The nose is quite all right, but taste and finish develop into something very sharp and stingy. A clear example of poor alcohol integration.
    • Nose
      86 86
Savory and even somewhat meaty, a distinct nuttiness of macadamias and peanuts, a very faint sulphur note of a struck match in an adjacent room. Also liquorice and fruity notes like sour red currants, plum and dates, finally a whiff of fried vegetables.
    • Taste
      82 82
Quite stingy on alcohol (like hot chili peppers). Adding a fair amount of water is recommended. Initially a sour fruitiness of cherries, blackberries, currants and sour oranges, stir fried vegetables and peppers, develops more and more bitter oak wood notes and eventually becomes just sharp and ashy.
    • Finish
      80 80
Long and incredibly dry: thin and quickly dissipating fruit, quite vegetal, some liquorice, pepper, pepper and even more pepper, bitter and dusty dry wood.

  5. Dre73 scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

More and more sulphur in the nose, the taste is characterized by some drying mouthfeel. Besides that, some red fruits and floral notes, but the sulphur and drought make me feel that this is not quite my type of whisky.
It's not that bad, but no, just not my thing.
    • Nose
      84 84
Fruity, floral, red fruits, laurel, a hint of sulphur. Later on, the sulpher gets more dominant, even a bit overwhelming.
    • Taste
      84 84
Strong and powerful, pepper. Drying mouthfeel, intense. Red fruits, less on the sulphur than the nose indicates.
    • Finish
      85 85
Still strong and powerful, red fruits. floral, drying mouthfeel, some wood, but pretty long.

  8. Calmar scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

A very pleasant, well-balanced whisky with a classic woody profile, a good palette of derivatives, an interesting composition, quite deep, smooth, extremely drinkable.
    • Nose
Open, dry, juicy wood tones, carpentry, thinner, glue, light animal notes and boiled vegetables, varnish, wool, mineral shades, sweet caramel motifs appear in development.
    • Taste
Dense, saturated, a variety of woody-lacquer notes, sweet caramel tones, bitterness of the bark, leather goods, creamy shades - toffee, boiled condensed milk; some candied ginger, teriyaki sauce, buckwheat honey, mineral motifs, tobacco, becomes quite sweet in development.
    • Finish
Light, warming, delicate notes of oak, candied ginger, caramel, leather goods, tobacco leaf.

Sour, metallic (iron), licorice, lovage, red-fruity, woody and very slightly sulphurous. Reminds me of the style of the (newer) Glendronach 15, which I would even just give preference here because I find it more coherent and cleaner.

A great Glenburgie. I think it's more old-school than wet barrel. Sure, barrel dominates, there is not much of the distillery character left, but you can tell what is behind it.
    • Nose
      87 87
Deep! A well matured, older malt from the sherry barrel. Everything well integrated. Dark fruits, nuts, leather, some iron. Not overloaded, just right.
    • Taste
      86 86
Good start, but not spicy. Oily and dense. Leather, nuts, raisins, dates, some wax.
    • Finish
      89 89
A long finish, almost syrupy, very sweet.

Here again the longer version of the Notes. I haven't had Glenburgie like that on my screen so far - it will probably change. Hope for comparable bottlings. A refill sherry maturation that is rarely so successful, great! I increase my quick notes by one point.
    • Nose
      90 90
Great refill sherry character, which complements the distillate perfectly.
Very sweet, Haribo Cherries and liquorice, honey, alcohol very nicely integrated, later also light-fruity tones with a little acidity. Adds a lot of complexity over time and makes a lot of promise
    • Taste
      88 88
Nice intensity. Alcohol integrated very nicely. I hardly believe the 52.7%. The aromas from the nose are reflected and mix with a pleasantly spicy wood influence. Bitter notes emerge and make way for fruits, nuts and Haribo Color-Rado again.
    • Finish
      89 89
In the finish, the profile gains even more and with dark chocolate. Medium to long. Far less sweet than on the nose. Licorice. Refill sherry of the better kind. The flavor increases from sip to sip. 21 years (presumably) European oak can sometimes overpower, nicely balanced here.

  21. craide scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Delicious malt, round and balanced, but not unmistakable.
But for me a bit too barrel-heavy.
    • Nose
      86 86
pretty sweet beginning and that already in the nose, followed by dark fruits, grapes, berries, plum, orange zest. Very intense fruit-sweet combination, alcohol is barely noticeable to me. In addition, a soft spice cake comes out, somehow slightly Christmas with cinnamon and cloves,
    • Taste
      87 87
Powerful start, also here rather sweet and fruity, alcohol depresses quite a bit without appearing alcoholic. An initially sharp oak spice comes through as a contrast. However, the sharpness decreases over time.
With a few raisins and plums with light vanilla and dark chocolate.
Carries out the good impression of the nose without further ado.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-length finish, sweet, spicy, slightly tingling in the mouth, a residual note of white pepper remains.

[August, 2020] I bought a bottle upon recommendation by a friend who is known for his sherried whisky preferences (but for his insensitivity to sulphur, too)...

...and this is not the sherry monster which buries all other flavours beneath the winey dominance - and this is great (to me)! All three malt, wine and wood are in a fine balance and contibute their share to a tasty experience which starts modern-stylish but turns more and more to an old-style profile over time. Without these minor sulphurous off-notes this would have been a 90 points score, for sure. It proves the best age of balanced and delicious sherried drams seems to be around 21-years of maturation (using refill casks), again. I prefer this over most of the sherry monsters which are very impressive the first sip but then add nothing more of interest (just my personal preference, sorry).
    • Nose
      88 88
The colour is burnished and the nose offers a sour-sweet modern sherry profile which is not that bad, actually. The typical Glenburgie malt flavours manage to break through the sherry dominance and the wood is firm but very appropriate. After some breathing the malt-driven aromas (florals, fruits, waxes) grow stronger while the sherry retreats somewhat - hey, this is a great changing of the guards! Unfortunately, there is a minor sulphurous off-note but it is not as annoying as with most other sulphur-spoiled drams, it rather reminds me of sulphured raisins.
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is nicely layered with sweet and bitter flavours in good balance and the sulphur is contained in raisins, again (luckily). The wood provides a firm backbone but never dominates the taste. After some chewing tasty nutty flavours pop up (walnuts, almonds and the like) as do oily and waxy impressions. This taste started with a modern profile but this changed more and more to an old-style one over time, I like that! Despite the minor sulphurous flaw this dram is both quaffable and interesting to explore, without that flaw I would score it 90+ points (most probably).
    • Finish
      88 88
The initial mouthfeel is warming and coating with a minor drying impression that is not distracting (I guess it is the sulphur, surely not tannins). The finish is long and adds a lot more of the delicious nutty impressions which turn the finish a little to the bitter side, but it is a tasty bitterness (provided you like nuts). The sweet sherry and barley sugars contain these bitter impressions nicely and the drying moments are to neclect (according to my taste buds). Again, the sulphur is not too distracting but it adds a little to the bitterness. Water increases the sulpurous off-notes significantly so guess what: I prefer the neat dram!

Fruity sweet notes with a relatively long finish

Reminds me a lot of the Cigar Malt 3 BW. Less sweet, traces of light fruits, apricot, cake batter. Very nicely done.

Fruits, honey caramel, in the mouth there is sweet creamy, with fruit, finish, multilayered, oak, getting dry, with chilli and ginger.
Great, really a nice whisky, you can tell his age.

Kaiserschmarrn with lots of raisins, powdered sugar and a pinch of cinnamon.
    • Taste
      88 88
Strong, creamy, dark honey. A neat sweetness that slowly moves towards the spice rack.
    • Finish
      87 87
Sweetly spicy with a subtle dryness.

  31. LDB scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A little interchangeable, this sherry malt, but tasty and with really well integrated alcohol.
    • Nose
      89 89
Juicy-sweet sherry nose, quite flattering. Warm almond croissants, red gummy bears, a good dose of beeswax and dandelion flowers - that makes you hungry for more.
    • Taste
      87 87
First a creamy candy, followed by candied ginger, spicy forest honey before it quickly becomes sour and dry.
    • Finish
      86 86
The oak comes relatively quickly, a slightly astringent tannin bitterness builds up, until the whole thing ends harmoniously.

  32. LeChiffre scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Overall, tasty and pleasant to drink, but you have to like the sweetness that is initially present in the mouth. Towards the end, the oak wort sets a good counterpoint. Delicious, but the sample (also with a view to the price) is enough for me.
    (Rating: o)
    • Nose
      87 87
very sweet and dark fruity; red berries; Cherries; Caramel; some raisins; Spices; a delicate pleasant oak flavor; the alcohol, which is slightly stinging at first, will disappear in the glass with a little time
    • Taste
      86 86
sweet (slightly sticky); Dried fruits; Raisins; Chocolate; spicy oak notes as a good counterpoint to the sweetness
    • Finish
      86 86
sweet-spicy; Dried fruits; delicate peppery-spicy oak with a slightly tart appeal

  33. g00se scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Wow, that's good. Whether you think the label is cool or not, I really like the malt and it definitely has facets to discover for the next time.
    • Nose
After a good 20 minutes of idle time, the bolide was finally cooled down and the alcoholic note that was initially stinging was gone. There are now typical refill sherry notes. But it is definitely still on the fruity side with red berries and cherries. Wood is also present and really just a drag of 'dirt'.
    • Taste
In the mouth it has a powerful start, with the red berries also dominating. Tastes like a very active barrel and well-distilled spirit. Typical Burgie notes? I don't know, this is my first Burgie. But a delicious one! Shortly before swallowing it gets dry again in the mouth.
    • Finish
The finish is really long and fruity.

    • Nose
      88 88
Slightly lovage, alcohol is imperceptible in the Glencairn and barely perceptible in the blender glass, this whisky is so round.
A lot of sweetness, which unfortunately covers everything.
A typical DoS sweetness that you find delicious or that you despise as over-covering.
Honey, caramel, I like the tasty sweetness as a treat because the breadth already fits at the age of 21, but it's not a journey of discovery.
    • Taste
      88 88
Here, too, very tasty, little alcohol, nothing disturbs like a Glenfarclas - you like it because you like to drink delicious whisky or you don't feel challenged enough because you have to discover something in every malt.
Round and a bit broad, too little complexity, but also very tasty to drink.

Very tasty ripe bottling. Alcohol very well integrated. Doesn't need water.
The nose is dominated by fruity sweetness, I associate Haribo, could be Color Rado. Full mouth on dark chocolate without becoming too bitter. In addition prunes, liquorice confectionery. Intense, fairly long finish. For me in the quick notes very round. Will definitely try again.

  36. Lorion scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Exceptionally tasty and accessible. The age spices wonderfully and separates the whisky from other tasty whiskys. 84 points.
    • Nose
Sweet and fruity with sweet oak and some fresh cake batter. A hint of leather.
    • Taste
Buttery and smooth. Chocolate, vanilla, some nutmeg.
    • Finish
      Medium length and fruity.
