This was by far the earthiest Ledaig I have ever tried. I doubt I would have guessed this was Ledaig had I tasted it blind, I probably would have through it was Ballechin or Port Charlotte— something with a slightly funky or earthy peat. This was really quite tasty and it was much better than I expected. I was not a huge fan of the prior Port finished Ledaig I tried and I think part of the reason I enjoyed this was that it seemed to have a relatively restrained cask influence in terms of sugars or fruits. I suspect the cask also had something to do with how earthy this came off and, while I really enjoyed that element of it, I think some might find it a bit weird, I could even see some of those earthy notes coming off as slightly sulfurous depending on one’s palate.
    • Nose
Creamy, salty, and funky. The nose ranged from soil to sea with impressions of a wooden cheeseboard, soft creamy cheese, and earthy dehydrated mushrooms. The creamy-earthiness brought to mind mushroom risotto, while slightly funk notes recalled an old shoe, though the wife insisted it was more like earthy soggy loam.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied and oily with notes of earth, tractor oil, and funk. A surprisingly earthy profile with notes of mushrooms, mangrove trees, compost, and distant campfires. The wife reckoned it was hearty and the earthy notes reminded her of a rich stew or, as creamier notes came into focus, cream of mushroom soup. Creamy funky notes brought to mind baked parmesan, caramelized yams, and wood ear mushrooms. A sweet note of cola came right at the end and water brought it forward even more.
    • Finish
Lingering earthy char and caramelized yams.

A fabulous Ledaig, and I don't even like Ledaig that much. Great creamy savoury funk, balanced port influence (though very sweet), and a great balsamic note.
    • Nose
Sweet and phat. Extra-fatty smoked brisket. Briny tang. Bright syrupy fruit: cherries, red grapes, orange, dates. Raisin challah drizzled clover honey. There’s a savoury, salty, creamy, and slightly stanky soft cheese note in here. Salted nuts and miso-ish fermented complexity.
    • Taste
Medium-thick texture. Sweet syrupy fruit on the arrival: stewed plums, balsamic, figs, and cherries, as well as candied ginger and peaches ‘n’ cream. Earthy and leathery smoke on the development, with more savoury and creamy cheese. It stays sweet, with raisin bread, demerara syrup, and something a little custardy.
    • Finish
Long and sweet. More balsamic reduction. Cooked veg, mushroom and candied sweet potato. Slightly farmy. Tangerine and peach.

Penetrating smoke and peat at first. Followed by notes of earth and wet sand. Now it turns fruity with many red notes. Strawberries complements really good with raspberries. Some cherries, peaches and a little raisin. At the end sweet port.

Great notes of peat and smoke. Some earth with black peppers and tabacco. Fruity notes like strawberryjam, raspberries and dark cherries. Chocolate complemented by some port. At the end a little bit of honey.
    • Finish
      87 87
Quite long! The smoke and pepper lingers on, but afterwards strawberries and raspberries dominate the finish.

He has to breathe a little ... then strong alcoholic freshness. When the nose has got used to it, dry smoke comes through, plus grapes, strawberries, and a slightly musty background aroma.
    • Taste
      86 86
Sweet, full-bodied, with lots of vinous aromas, ripe grapes, subtle smoke, hardly any oak spice. Water is not absolutely necessary.
    • Finish
      85 85
Sweet and fruity, a subtle smoke stays in the mouth for a long time.

Amazingly little peat, surprisingly little port for full maturation. But that's not wrong at all, missing, so the attached vinous notes, which so show some port finishes. Rather edgy, but interesting whiskey,
    • Nose
First sweet port notes, then some cowshed smell, only subtle, herbaceous, sweet, spicy, minimally peaty. With water a little sweeter and fruity.
    • Taste
strong, spicy, peppery, slightly sweet notes, but rather peaty, earthy mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Pepper, peat, sweet port notes, slightly bitter and atringent.
