This was the 1st dram in a line-up of 6 Archives whiskies.
    • Nose
      87 87
Very fresh nose: citrus, grass, apples and pears. Some vanilla. Nice but I do not have the idea I am dealing with a 28 year old whisky.
    • Taste
      85 85
Not really full body. Bit thin in the taste. Again this does not seem to be a 28y old dram to me. Herbal flavors cannot be found in the nose, but are definitely there in the taste.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long and slightly bitter in the finish.

Conclusion: Bit average; I had expected a bit more of this Linkwood.

Part of an 6 sample Archives tasting I did with friends. Strangely enough the other 4 fellows could not really appreciate this dram, but I did. This one is breathing refill casks and that’s my cup of tea.
    • Nose
This is a pleasant nose. Subtle, sweet and a tad sour/dry. Typical refill profile with ripe, fresh fruits and quite some spices/herbs. Love it. There is quite some age in this, you can tell by the dusty blanket that is on top of it. Tropical fruits like ripe melon & pineapple and other fruits like lemon peel & zesty pear. Dry old oak flavors are there. Seasoned pipe tobacco, saw dust and grassiness.
    • Taste
On the palate the sweet & sour subtleties continue. Like often with refill casks it offers a slow release of flavors, building up nicely. Several sensations pass my palate with a quite big dryness mid-palate, giving crushed pepper. It does feel a bit tart at that point but it stays within limits and after this the fruitiness and dried spices take over again. Again citrus & tropical fruits like stated above. It’s not developing incredibly but it is pleasant in what it offers.
    • Finish
In the finish mild spices dominate. Vanilla sticks, nutmeg and more typical ‘bourbon spices’ pass by. Also I get thyme and a whiff of hay. Good stuff!

If you like your dram more powerful and in your face, this probably is not your dram. If you like it more subtle and long aged in less active cask this is a must try ;)

We drunk this one as part of an online tasting with friends. Independently we came to the conclusion that this one is clearly overrated.
In my opinion you will get better price quality balance with Glenlivet 12. Even with time and warmth, this one didnt really seem to get up

Fruity, apples and pears. Quite nice, not much depth or layers which you would expect with such an age.
      Some vanilla and some wood.
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet, little bit on the sugary side of the whisky. Some vanilla, some apples and haribo bears. Again this one isn't of much complexity.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium length. Some sugar, hint of pears. Some wood and a tad bitter note in the end. Not bad, not good either.

  4. RobbievdB scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

The nose is the best part of this whisky and delivers nice fruity aromas in the likes of apples, pears and some citrus. Taste and finish wise it's spring'ish, with heather, fresh herbs and some vanilla sweetness, turns a tad bitter. Not too impressed.
