Just a step up from your regular Jameson or Bushmills NAS. Nothing wrong with it, nothing great either. Perfect pub whiskey for any occasion.

Light fruity and delicate. Some grass, some mint in the background. Classic Irish whiskey on the nose. Yet there should have been more if bottled on higher strength.

Sweet and easy accessible. Some vanilla, some fudge and some sweet tropical fruits. Drinkable for everyone.

Short-medium length. There is a little bitter note here. Mainly you will get vanilla and caramelsauce. Nothing to blame here, but nothing outspoken either.

Nice Irish fruit upfront. After that this whiskey reveals it's high grain content: alcoholic, short finish, metallic/cardboard note.

Bought this McConnell's 5yo as an affordable whiskey to alternate with more expensive single malts. I have very limited experience with Irish whiskey, but I am aware of the use of unmalted grains and column still distillation. The smell is fruity but with a very distinct odor of herbal cereals that I do not recognize from (mostly Scottish) single malts, I presume these are the unmalted grains. The nose also has nutmeg/mace. There is a bit oaky vanilla from the bourbon barrel maturation, but generally the flavor is mild, light, lacks complexity. Finish is short. Good whiskey, but only when I am in the mood for it, which is not that often. As a next purchase, I am inclined to try a more premium Irish whiskey or a light and fruity Scotch single malt (Deanston 12?) instead of reordering this.

Scent: first on my nose it reminds me of the Tyrconnel whiskey aroma. Higher proportion of such pure green single mortar. The aroma is creamy, citrus, fruity, sweet
Taste: very pleasantly sweet, honey, with white pepper and vanilla and stone fruit.

    In the nose

Very fruity nose with peaches, nectarines and gooseberries, a touch of raspberry, vanilla, peppermint pancakes, yogurt and meadow of flowers and a little white oak.

Taste: Peach, nectrine and pineapple, very present at first, followed by a little vanilla, a meadow of flowers and then light pepper and alcohol in the finish. Unfortunately, there is no finish and the alcohol becomes more present with every sip. Unfortunately, one has to say that the nose promises more than the palate delivers.

Conclusion: Well-drinkable Irish, but not anymore, priced at over 32 to 39 rather steep. The bottle looks nice but that's about it.
