Whisky Reviews for Bunnahabhain 2001 ElD

An eighteen-year-old Bunnahabhain from the sherry barrel of The Single Malts of Scotland is in the glass today. It shines chestnut-colored to red-yellow, the windows are medium in size and have an alcohol content of 54.7% vol. there is still some room for personal adjustment.

The beginning is very promising and sublime: dense sandalwood, red currants, cherries, marzipan, ripe banana, vanilla, whole milk chocolate. Above that a fruity sweetness and a pleasant spice, which fits perfectly into the aroma profile. You notice subtle almonds and walnuts, the sherry barrel looks elegant and not intrusive.
    • Taste
      90 90
The Bunna is oily and fruity on the palate, but also with a good portion of wood and pepper. After reduction with a few drops of water, the sherry influence becomes clearer and the sharpness decreases. Red berries come to the fore, caramel, vanilla. A whisky that you would like to treat yourself to a second glass of.
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium to long, with chocolate, orange peel, vanilla, honey and some wood. All in all, a very soft and pleasant malt that you would like to remember.

  3. LeChiffre scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Overall, a very tasty malt, more on the funky, fruity side, and less noticeable the distinctive woody influence of European oak (perhaps suggests a flounder made from American white oak). For the price and thus a large bottle, however, in the end I am missing the certain something, seems a little arbitrary for such maturations.

I would agree with Malzbrenner (see his notes). This is a very well balanced and well matured 18 year old Bunnahabhain. A one certainly to enjoy with or without friends. It won’t keep you bored. Having a second shot just now. Marvellous!
