A well made dram, with a lovely soft spiciness and well integrated sherry notes. This is the expression I enjoyed the most in an extensive lineup of age stated Macallans (12 Triple, Double & Sherry Cask, 15 Triple and Double Cask, 18 Double & Sherry Cask) I tried in one session. Still, it lacks the power to really impress. Pricewise, this whisky is a complete joke of course.
    • Nose
      86 86
A bit shy at first, but develops nicely. Raisins, praliné chocolate and coffee. Has a ligher side too; it's a bit floral and some fruits are to be discovered. A tiny bit of smoke?
    • Taste
      88 88
Well integrated spices, oranges, chocolate, vanilla and a sweet floral side. Develops well in the mouth and no offnotes to be found.
    • Finish
      87 87
Soft spices again, with juicy citrus fruits, praliné and vanilla. Subtle tannins develop, which give it a bit more weight. A hint of smoke returns.

  3. HammerHead scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Head to head with the 18yo double cask which has way better balance than this. 18 years of maturation and still no proper integration here... dissapointing. The price performance ratio is downright laughable.
    • Nose
      86 86
Dried fruits, raisins, fig, overripe peach, orange and lemon, sour cherry, blueberry, chocolate, roasted nuts, soft leather, ginger, nutmeg and clove.
    • Taste
      84 84
Dried fruit, apricot, raisin, fig, cherry, lemon, honey, some leather polish, dark chocolate, coffee bitters, bitter nuts, clove and very clear (black) pepper. I would even call this a little hot (at only 43%).
    • Finish
      81 81
Medium: some honey, dried fruits, cherry, roasted walnuts, cocoa, coffee and a sudden rush of peppery hot alcohol at the tail end (must be poor integration).

    Colour: lacquered mahogany

Conclusion: no, not a sherry bomb... but, this is a legend and a standard of taste in its age, everything is very balanced and balanced, with such a sit and get high by the fireplace... it's a pity that the realities of current prices are a pain

    Points: 90
    • Nose

Aroma: well, everything is like in a textbook - rich and balanced... spicy sweet spices, dark berries, high-quality dried fruits, dark bitter chocolate, Cappuccino coffee... nice tannins... a little ginger
    • Taste
      90 90
Taste: very juicy and fat - dark chocolate surrounded by an enveloping creamy coffee foam ... dried fruits - dates, raisins, dark dried apricots ... pleasant astringency of tannins ...

Finish: long... enveloping-warm... chocolate-coffee-tannin... well, dried fruit too... very pleasant

Nose is very nice, but thats about it. Very very thin and watery in the mouth. Really, nothing positive to say in terms of mouthfeel or richness of flavor. I am underwhelmed and very disappointed as this is the first time I ponied up to spend 350+ on a Macallan. Never making that mistake again. Ive had more enjoyable drams for less than 1/3 the price. I really expected more. Part of the reason I was willing to spend the money was the high rating it has on this site. Thanks guys! No idea how the ratings are so high. The Macallan Cacao was much much better at less than half the price. Save your money.

A dram for adults. On the one hand because of the price, but also in the nose you immediately notice what you have in front of you.
    • Nose
      89 89
Very round and aged gracefully. Very pleasant wood aromas, very light apple. Slightly nutty.
    • Taste

      This continues in the mouth.
    • Finish
      88 88
Pleasant finish, but without standing out.

Hey Macallan! It was hardly possible for me to get close to bottlings from previous years. Now I can finally buy a few of the legendary Sherry Cask editions.
I'm sobered up. This isn't what I expected. Perhaps one can still get hold of bottlings here and there that have established the Macallan myth. For me it is incomprehensible. I sit back and leave the field to others who understand Macallan. I prefer to focus on all the other whisky wonders that exist today.

    A Classic.
    • Nose
Old wood, lots of wood, sherry aromas, also some peppery and raisins (which I like so much!).
A really mature malt. I would have blindly guessed it as older.
You have to like strong oak characteristics.
Not dissimilar to 12 Sherry. Only much more mature and therefore much more woody.
    • Taste
      Classic Macallan Speyside Malt Whisky.
Very round, very soft, a lot of oak.
      You can literally taste age.
      A mature whisky.
At 43%, he actually has enough power to make himself noticed.
    • Finish
      Very long.
There's a lot of complexity here.
The sherry cask aging is clearly evident.
Good luck for! The European oak barrel greets.
Lots of spices, a little leather is added.

Modern sherry, paint and sherry, lots of damp oak, on the palate, chemicals, paint, dried dates, woody, not too bad.

  12. Petitcham scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Add a little water: macallan-specific spices, suites, oaks, dry fruits, no inconvenience

  13. whistleky scored this whisky 82 points Newbie

Citrusy, sugared ginger spice and what I would call a "clean" type sherry flavor. Similar to the 2019, and much better than the 2018 in my opinion.

Very drinkable but disappointingly looses strength very quickly, only the spiciness is retained. Perhaps to be expected due to such a low abv. Considering the price, I don't see a reason to buy this instead of the excellent 12yo.

very dry style of modern sherry, you have to love it, sorry, but no, and where is 18 years old? hmm, sad ...

  15. craide scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Me and Macallen that won't work. There is no question that this is a good, tasty malt. Very harmonious with a good balance between the palate and nose. But does not reflect what it costs. I think that I can get this quality much cheaper from others.
    • Nose
      87 87
A little restrained at first, but then nice, soft sherry flavors. Some raisins, plums and dates. A few vinous notes of red wine or rose resonate. A few red berries mix with it. The malt already appears fruity-sweet and a little creamy in the nose. Subtle notes of leather, tobacco and milk chocolate emerge in the background, slide forward and leave less room for the fruit notes. The whole time it is accompanied by wood aromas. The wood brings in a nice contrast, a bit bitter then fresh again.
    • Taste
      87 87
Appears a bit thin on the palate with the first sip. But then it is not really. The feeling of the soft, creamy nose is now confirmed. Slightly oak spicy with little heat. It tingles only slightly and immediately brings out the fruit notes. Red berries, oranges, raisins. In general, it looks more like dried fruit, as the malt generally leaves a dusty, musty impression on the palate for me. Honey and chocolate bring out a bit of sweetness, with a hint of vanilla and almond. More spices in the background. Cloves, pepper.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium-long finish, the malt remains fruity and sweet. something like roasted almonds with cinnamon. Slight sharpness,

I loved the 2018 and 2019, both of which got 91 points from me.
Now this one, which looks great in terms of color. Almost dark brown, a mahogany. Thick, oily streaks on the glass ...

    A typical Macallan for me.
That intense sherry nose, old wood, leather.
Everything harmonious, by no means overwhelming, noble.

In terms of taste on the same line,
maybe a touch more barrel, less sherry.
No missing notes, it stays round and tasty.

Of course, 300+ euros for such a bottle is already a word.
And yet I'm happy to try it again ...

Direct an aroma of red fruits, raisins, plums and dates. Light chocolate, toffee and almonds.
    • Taste

Floral, sweet, honey and chocolate. A little butterscotch with vanilla bean. A little sweet pepper in the background.
    • Finish

Floral and burnt sugar. A little vanilla that surprises. Pepper and more sweetness. Medium to long.

  18. dominikbraun scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

I wouldn't want to compare this Macallan to the Glendronach 18 or Glengoyne 21. It is much more balanced and the sherry influence is more reserved - that is not a valuation, but the objective statement. Which style you prefer is a matter of taste.

In any case, this whisky deserves to be bottled with 46% ABV. So he stays a little below his potential.
    • Nose
      88 88
Red, fruity and sweet. Butter scotch, sun-dried fruits, croissants, fried almonds, flowers, milk chocolate. The nose is very creamy, balanced, colorful and friendly. Personally, I really like this Macallan character.
    • Taste
      87 87
Milk chocolate, juicy fruits, stone fruits, tart wood, pancakes with plum jam, delicate spices, pastries and hay. Very tasty, but unfortunately a little little volume for 18 years.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish rounds off the tastes described above well and leaves a fruity-tart taste on the tongue.

It's been a long time since I tried a Macallan Sherry 18, I had tried double cask 18 earlier this year however not a big fan, for me in double cask series, the 15 is more balance.

The new sherry 18 is delicate, malty sweet, nose is really good. Price wise, was a little high and I really hope for the price they can increase the abv a little bit more, 46-48%.
    • Nose
      88 88
Milk chocolate, coco cereals, hints of smoke, dried fruits, the oak is well integrated, not overly sherried. Some tobacco, a little bit of hay, more coco cereals, chocolate bar, some matches. Delicately sweet nose.
    • Taste
      86 86
A bit dry and thin bodied compare to the nose. Dark chocolate, toffee, some oak spice, dark fruit tea.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium, some sherry sweetness, dark chocolate.

Not judging this one by older bottlings I don't know and which supposedly represented one cornerstone in building Mac's good reputation. This one - price aside - is a good sherry cask whisky, well-integrated with wood spices, not overly sherried, nicely balanced, perhaps a bit thin-bodied, in short, a competently-crafted dram I quite enjoyed. However if you now take the price into consideration this quickly becomes a model case for marketing fraud and pretentiousness. I can see this nowadays with all the price spikes considered retailing for a bout 100-120 EUR (somewhat in similar range as Dronach 18, which is most probably more intense, but maybe not as fine-tuned). Everything above is Macallan exclusive money I am afraid. But I am very thankful for having had the opportunity to try this one from a good whisky pal. Slainté! :-)

Quite drinkable but indeed nothing special - get multiple bottles of a more exciting whisky for the same price instead
    • Nose

Raisins, vinous notes, forrest fruits, berries, some leathery notes, hints of sherry wood, little nutty
    • Taste

Oily, creamy, subtle sweetness, nutty, more raisins, toffee, little spices, more vinous notes, little citric, orange zest

Medium long, warm, little spicy, more raisins

Quite a boring whisky, it’s not bad but the price is ridiculous. Not very complex, ok sherry, feels youngish and thin with a short finish

Overall, a delicious and drinkable whisky hidden the price. But nothing special and a bit thin.

And with a view to the price, which I can no longer ignore in this case, unfortunately a disappointment - the sample is enough for me. It is much cheaper and better elsewhere, for example a Glengoyne 21y or Glendronach 18y for a fraction of the price is clearly ahead in all respects.
