This is the first whiskey I ever had.
In high school they called me jack cause I always bring jack.
It's my go to whiskey, I prefer it neat ,sometimes chilled, sometimes with ginger beer.
It's reliable because it's in every store ,in every bar. It's also pretty cheap...

Work well with coke but drinking it neat would be a challenge. The charcoal filtration did add flavour to the bourbon and make it smoother.

    In my pre-historical scoring method, it's a 7.8/10.

Jack Daniel’s Old No 7 Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey, 40%.

    Consumed Dec 2021.

Of course like most people I’ve consumed plenty of this, although always with coke. I’ve never before sat down with a neat double pour and thought about what’s in the glass. So today is a new experience for me.

Very dark for a whiskey that’s presumably very young and that’s been heavily diluted. A mid-tone amber.

Aroma is good ... but it instantly brings to mind grotty nightclubs from my youth. The alcohol cuts through the caramelised banana notes, bringing some appley esters too creating more of a toffee apple vibe. Celery after the immediate ‘sweet’ impressions. Some red skin peanut and raspberry ice cream over time. It’s really not a bad nose, and it’s quite distinctive. It's just a pity about the psychological associations it conjures up.

    Watery in the mouth.

Taste is very easy-going but not insipid. Borderline insipid, but always stays just about flavourful enough with its vaguely toffee apple profile, which is more than can be said for many 40% drams. The alcohol and wood together seem to bring a slight spiciness but neither shows up in a literal/obvious or unappealing way.

It’s quite simple, but enjoyable and direct. Impressively well-made on this showing, for something so cheap and ubiquitous. I mean it’s not wonderful but it’s good, as you’d expect for something with an enduring worldwide reputation.

There are plenty of whiskies that I have enjoyed drinking less than this. Perhaps there is some variability but on this showing I would say that it deserves more respect than it sometimes gets. 3.4/81

  13. ZLako scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

Revisited: It's fine, very sweet and basic. from 64 to 70.

Because it was in promotion I revisited it again with a full 70cl bottle. I will replace my rating again. From 70 to 78.

If the finish would be better it could be almost the perfect budget dram. Also at 90 proof it would be ways better.
    • Nose
      82 82
Green apple, banana, whiff of smoke, toasted wood, vanilla and some light toffee.
    • Taste
      79 79
Sweet upfront, ripe apple, banana, then some vanilla and oak with a hint of maple syrup. It's extremely balanced, full and mellow thanks to the charcoal filtration. (Actually love the charcoal filtration. This case it's filtered right after distillation before they put it in the barrel. In other cases like Ezra Brooks they charcoal filter it after they remove it from the barrels. I like both since they get a nice mellow profile with some maple syrup notes since they use maple wood to make the charcoal.)
    • Finish
      73 73
Short to medium. This part is off from the Nose and Taste by miles. If this was better it could be a lovely lovely dram. It has a certain sourness and wood polish note that is a bit unpleasant but once you go over that you get sweetness with a hint of spice.

I have a soft spot for this one.
Easy drinking whiskey, perhaps a bit too much glue in the nose.
I don't get much ethanol like some people do on the nose.
On the palate it a fairly straightforward sweet bourbon profile.
I always have a bottle open for those nights where you just want an easy drinking whiskey that doesn't demand much attention.

PJQ after seeing an incredible score of 100 points for this whiskey, I have to ask - do you work for Jack Daniel's?

  38. PJQ did not rate this whisky Newbie

It's the best known whiskey for a very good reason. Its one of the best made. it's smooth, has a good after burn, coats the mouth nicely and suits any drinking style. Neat, over ice, or with coke, it just works. This is the best all rounder bourbon whiskey and i strongly recommend to all drinkers to have a bottle in the cabinet.

  39. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 60 points Super Administrator

Tasted neat, this Tennessee whiskey is rather harsh and rough. It predominantly smells of airfix glue and solvents, but there is a fruity note lurking in the background. Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 is very young whiskey indeed. However, mixed with Coca Cola it harmonizes surprisingly well, as the late Lemmy Kilmister would have confirmed. Hence, from the perspective of a Scotch Single Malt drinker, I can recommend Jack Daniel's for mixing purposes. If you are used to drink your whiskey neat, you probably want to try 'the older brother' Gentleman Jack.

You can probably make an okay coke or ginger ale or sprite mix out of this, but it has no value whatsoever for an enthusiast.
    • Nose
Dominantly sweet. Not sugary or dessert sweet, but jelly candy sweet with a side of corn. Not in any way impressive, but not horribly offensive either, there being no heavy ethanol notes like in Jim Beam white label, or any metals or soapiness. Just blandness all around. Something slightly bitter hangs in the background.
    • Taste
First it's sweet, as if someone distilled a few gummi bears, then a bit of spiciness, and finally slight bitterness. This is no sipping whiskey, but probably would mix better than Jim Beam.
    • Finish
Syrupy sweetness. That's pretty much all.

      Colour:
      Orange - gold

      Nose:
Start something stale. But then come immediately fermented, sweetened fruits. Go in the direction of mirabelles and apricots. An associated adhesive note can not be denied. Behind the surprisingly fruity sweetness, with vanilla, but still something dry is hidden. Cereals and some dried flowers. If you let the 15 minutes stand, even liquorice, mint and verkokeltes wood comes. I was positively surprised now ...
    • Taste
Very watery start. Some pepper, slightly metallic, vanilla and subtle light fruit. This is already in the cooked direction. The taste also a little woody roasted aromas. An artificial sweetened aroma. The taste is actually a bit sharper on the second sip. Softwood, plastic and musty aromas. Dry pastries and a very spicy spice that I'm not coming to. Annoy me now ...
    • Finish
Short to medium. Vanilla, the metallic undertone, artificial sweetness and again the cookie with the special spice. Will be much drier at the end.

The taste statement that he is no longer made of waste, lifts him over 60 points. The taste is not completely confused and the sharpness a bit softened. Weak character and far from the qualities of a true Tennessee. Will continue to damage the image of American whiskey in Germany.

Aroma: It's a lot to smell sweet, but I can not say it would bother me. It is embedded in a total scent, into wood, heavy sweets of over-ripe fruit, winds, licorice. Somewhere behind it is the cucumber lure and the liquid charcoal charcoal. Actually, it all works fine and I like it. (83 b)
Taste: In taste, the overall tone is weaker. The lust is to know, the body is thin. Burned corn, cinnamon, some vanilla and woody bitterness. (75 b)
    Points: 79
Summary: I was tasting after twenty years thanks to the birthday party celebration. Overall, JDBL is quite industrial, but it does not really matter.

I was given a 350 ml bottle, and decided to try it neat. Not a pleasant experience…

After pouring, the overwhelming scent is glue, reminiscent of model airplane building... which I was horrible at. Given some time in the glass, excessive banana sweetness comes to the fore. Better than the glue it pushes away rather effectively, but too artificial and not pleasant.

The mouth experience is harsh, indicating a young whiskey. Gluey sweetness, some dry wood and pepper. The finish is medium long, pepper prevails the longest.

Sorry, but this is a cola mixer for me…

The presentation is manly, tough. Label could do with a little less text; it is a bit cluttered. More sleek would have added to its visual appeal.

Actually quite useful (if you like bourbon, of course), which probably only burned into the memory as bad because you were used to the first try not a 40% schnaps and "Ex!" generally not a good idea. In its quality class, it is just under € 20 but one of the more expensive, and for the Coke's is much cheaper.
    • Nose
Corn sweetener (slightly towards maple syrup), caramel, charred wood, some glue ... and there is still a sugar sweet, artificial fruit note, hard to describe, perhaps most reminiscent of these foam sugar strawberries
    • Taste

Do not really understand this at all. Whiskey (just ordinary bourbon) that has become big by film and advertising and teenagers who want to do great. Nice with cola. But only with cola. In my view JD is only good for two things: to mix with cola and to sell in cafes and discotheques sell t-shirts with JD print to mid-lifers

    • Finish
the maple turns to toffee and it goes a little bitter before returning to sweet

the sweetnes stay surprisingly long considering the thin start of the body

Bad but I was expecting worse
    • Nose
Whiskey of rye and barley, about 5 years old
Nose on the board, hot popcorn, herbs and varnish
    • Taste
pronounced bitterness, bad gentian, sugar and board

I have to say, I am surprised. Not my "style" - way too sweet and too little complexity - but nevertheless it is surprisingly good to eat for such a mass-produced product. So, when I'm back at a party where there's only "Jack Cola" I'll ask for it without a coke.
    • Nose
Very sweet, accessible and easy presents the Old No. 7 in the glass. Vanilla, caramel, sweet corn, maple syrup and some coconut. When the nose is pushed deep into the glass, the alcohol bites with a very slight touch of glue. More comes even after a long time in the glass definitely not, no complexity.
    • Taste
Very sweet, almost like a liqueur! Very soft and a bit watery on the tongue. Jellybeans, vanilla cream with bananas and lots of sweet corn again. Add some ginger and nutmeg.
    • Finish
At first, the alcohol is a bit harsh in the finish. When that has settled, it will be sweet again. All kinds of sweets, caramel and tons of vanilla pods.

Caramel, vanilla, coconut, and a chemical varnish. Easy palate, final with light tannins. Acceptable but not terrible.

Lacks complexity, too sugarry. In someway I can understand why so much people likes it, but on the other hand I also understand why generally these people doesn't like regular whiskey!
    Still, it's good with Coke
    • Nose
Very monolithic, on vanilla, sugar and caramel
    • Taste
Exactly in keeping with the nose, nothing more, nothing less
    • Finish
Short, still in keeping with the mouth and the nose

when i first nosed and tasted this whiskey i was impressed probably because it is unique with it's charred maple qualities, but as i expanded my knowledge and got to taste other american offerings, this got old and tiring really quick to a point that it was getting mediocre. good for beginners...

Most people think of Jack Daniels as Bourbon, unless you're from Kentucky or Tennessee, then you know that it is actually Tennessee Whiskey because it has been charcoal filtered.  A little harsh compared to Irish Whiskey or Scotch.  Like Bourbon it has some sweetness compared to other whiskies. Good on its own, with ice, or mixed, also good in marinades.

A good barbecue whiskey that does what it's suppose to. It's not a bad ingredient in the marinade either.

    (Rating interval 73-77)
    • Nose
A vanilla bomb with sweet corn and more vanilla sugar.
    • Taste
Sweet vanilla, maple syrup and oak. A combination of black and pink pepper in the background.

A top-selling bottling from the Jack Daniel distillery, the mashbill is made up of 80% corn, 12% rye and 8% malt. The spirit is filtered through 10 feet of sugar maple charcoal to produce a mellow, slightly smoky character, thus making it Tennessee whiskey...

This whiskey seems to be a little pretender. But why the decades-long worldwide sales success? Despite mass production and favorable price: In the relation to the usual Bourbons of BJ and EW mE a correct enlightenment!
    • Nose
sweet mint, fresh oak, vanilla; deep, but still light
    • Taste
slightly ashy overgrown spiciness, corn syrup
    • Finish

Had hidden this whiskey in the back of the rack. And today after a long time courage and once again tasted. And what a surprise: that is not as bad as I remembered him and many ratings certify! Now I also understand the enthusiasm of a colleague of mine. Jim Murray is lying with my 87 points not completely off the mark, this cheap drop has quite its qualities. Tasting note will follow occasionally. Hereby an apology to all Whisk (e) yfreunde, which evaluate differently. But Scotland, in my opinion, sometimes offers drops, which may well drop in proportion to the US drinks.

With the exception of Wasmund's (made in Virginia, USA - http://www.copperfox.biz/press/ ), this is the worst whiskey I have ever had. You need a tongue and stomach of steel for this. Ouch!

    • Finish
