The Teeling 16 years old 2003 Ex-Abafado Casks Finish Single Cask for Bresser & Timmer is a 16 year old Irish single malt whiskey special bottled for the Dutch importer Bresser & Timmer. This Teeling was distilled in 2003 and matured in ex bourbon casks followed by a 12 month finish in Quinta de Alorna Ex-Abofado casks. Abafado is a sweet fortified wine aged for 5 years in wooden barrels with an alcohol content of 17.5%. An excellent dessert wine! These Abafado casks are bottled on April 27, 2020 at cask strength of 55.2%, non chill filtered and without the addition of dyes.

“The whiskey is beautifully balanced with a beautifully rich, full nose. In it apricot, a little peach and nuts (almond / walnut). The taste is particularly rich in which the fruit returns. Especially in the aftertaste, it is obvious to see the "marriage" with the ex-Abafado barrels. A very long sweet rich finish is the result. Very nice with chocolate and / or desserts with chocolate and orange. ”

Maybe a bit rough around the edges, but there's enough to make up for it.
    • Nose
After a touch of cardboard the fruits take over. Peach skin, nectarines and pickled lemons, but also a whiff of aniseed and peanut skins. It can do with some water though.
    • Taste
Immediately presents itself as much sweeter than the nose, combined with a fantastic tropical fruitiness. Not quite the same, but nearing those older Irish. A tad spicier though. And with some cardboard too. Water tames it a bit, but brings out a slight bitterness.
    • Finish
Lingering orchard fruits. Honey. Medium in length.

    Apricot & Peach

As far as I know this is the first time that Teeling finished its whiskey in an Abafado cask. Abafado is a fortified wine from Portugal, best compared to Pineau De Charentes. Hence, I’m expecting a very sweet whiskey. It was bottled exclusively for the Dutch importer Bresser & Timmer.

At first I get the typical Teeling nose: nicely fruity, round and sweet. The emphasis here is on apricots and peaches, yellow plums and starfruit. Some walnuts and soft spices like ginger and liquorice. Wonderfully summery and quasi tropical.

On the palate it first offers sweet notes like on the nose, but that is soon joined by some bitter touches as if from a grape pith, followed by liquorice and white pepper. White wine kicks in. So does mandarin. It stays on the right sight of bittersweet, let’s say. Very drinkable despite the strength.

It’s in the long, honeysweet finish that the Abafado cask puts its foot down. It keeps the finish very sweet and rich and turns this Teeling into a veritable dessert.

This stuff makes me happy. Worth its price tag of 100 EUR. With a big thank you to Belgium’s biggest Teeling fan, Benny J.
