- Nice and pleasant
- I don't know what to think of that at all. The nose was somehow just before uncomfortable, in the mouth an absolute cracker and then it was gone.
Notes from a blind tasting.
I really wouldn't have come across Auchentoshan now, but I could have, because I once had an Auchentoshan in the glass at Cadenhead in Campbeltown, which was a similar, actually even better grenade in my mouth. With that, however, nose and finish were also right.
Flesh apples and mineral notes immediately after pouring. A little later peach and a sour bread note. After a while, this acidity and stale note only intensified, it almost smells like it was corked. With a lot of good will, you can also let it pass as an old bottle flavor. Behind it lies a sweet note of ripe peaches, but it doesn't manage to get to the fore. With hand warmth, toffee notes emerge and the alcohol begins to tickle your nose. It is more harmonious now, but still far from being balanced.
The variety also continues in the mouth, but now looks much more balanced and above all more appropriate. The start is mild, yet powerful, the mouthfeel extremely dense and oily, dark honey with toffees, some grass, distant fruit notes and, towards the back, oak in homeopathic cans. In the second sip, the mineral notes from the nose can be found again.
The finish is very short, actually almost too short to describe it. It already fades in the mouth, but it is still very pleasant. A mixture of mint and liquorice is most likely to save itself in the finish.
In the longer open bottle, 2/3 empty, the annoying lacquer aromas have almost completely disappeared. An intense, sweet, perhaps somewhat artificial cherry remains.
If you don't like Mon Cherrie, steer clear of it. Intense cherry, sweet, the alcohol is clearly present. I like it best but clearly reduced to about 46%
A dry, fading fruity note remains. The wood itself doesn't seem to have had much of an impact.
- Cherry Syrup
I had to wait long on this one, but today Billy – the Belgian representative for Malts of Scotland – would by pass in my neighborhood and he therefor delivered to the Toshan Man’s door. Thomas Ewers, the sympathetic owner of this German bottler, selected a refill sherry hogshead that had slept for no less than 20 years with my favorite Lowlander (can I say that in times of Murraygate?). It was bottled at cask strength.
On the nose I do get those classic delicate traits of Auchentoshan, joined by lovely notes of cherry syrup and blood oranges. Some toffee apples and hint of sour rolls. But underneath there is also a little dirty edge of putty and even a hint of rubber. I consider myself lucky this does not dominate.
The rubber does not return on the palate. Now I get a creamy, feisty and dark red malts on the tongue. Cherries with chocolate. Make that Mon Chéri. The juice of blood oranges, upholstered with cloves and soft ginger. A bit zesty as well.
In the finish the tannins come to the fore, making for a lightly drying bitterness. But it remains sufficiently sweet to keep the balance.
Lovely Auchentoshan that – thanks to being matured in a refill cask – can shows its own DNA.
- Nice 20YO Auchentoshan. On the nose I get paint and varnish mixed with pomme d'amour and thick cherry syrup.
The palet goes on in the same direction. The finish is medium long.
I do enjoy this whisky, but I'm not sure I would want a whole bottle of this. When I spend 100€ on a whisky, I'm looking for something different. While I do like the balance between the sweetness and the varnishy notes, I'm not sure this could keep me engaged for multiple drams.
