A dream, the old Glengoyne's are in a class of their own in my opinion - this is no exception! Wonderful heavy old sherry aromas and great oak notes. Everything is perfectly coordinated and exciting in the nose and mouth, even if you naturally have to like the noticeable wood influence. Compared to the 25J less fruity-sweet, instead more set oak aromas and heavy sherry notes.
    • Nose
intense heavy and complex shear nose; dark fruits; dark cherries; Raisins; Dates; Dark chocolate; old leather; Furniture polish; Cinnamon; woody set oak seasoning; very old, complex and wonderfully balanced on the nose
    • Taste
viscous, mouth-filling mouthfeel; intense sherry note; Sweet; Dried fruits; Raisins; Dates; dark cherries; Spices; Cinnamon; Dark chocolate; beautifully integrated tingling old oak aromas (delicately tart) swing great integrated in the background; wonderfully complex-balanced mouthfeel, the advanced age is clearly noticeable
    • Finish
very long; slightly sticky mouthfeel; sweet sherry note; Cherries; some cocoa, espresso; Dark chocolate; Spices; spicy, slightly bitter-tart oak aromas

Honestly, I don't know if this is malt whisky or just sherry wine. It's like wine. It tastes like too much wood. The average score for this whisky is too much hype.

You can feel the many good fragrances that can be felt in whisky aged for a long time in a sherry cask.
    • Taste
      89 89
It's good to feel various elements, but the balance is a little disappointing.
    • Finish
      89 89
It finishes a little spicy with nutmeg, clove, etc., but it doesn't go as well as expected and doesn't last long.

A big bad bruiser, but lacking the elegance and balance of its younger sibling.

Very similar to the 25-year-old, but darker in color and with way more oak spice on the nose. I wouldn't even say the sherry is that more intense; it really comes down to whether or not what you were missing in the 25-year-old was more wood. I prefer the younger version, which to my mind has a superior balance between cask and spirit (and a higher ABV to boot). This one is actually going a bit over the top as far as dark, woody aromas go.
    • Taste
      87 87
I prefer the 25-year-old on the palate as well, by a wide margin. This one's sharper, hotter, more gingery and peppery, and less balanced. Don't get me wrong: it's still a very enjoyable, full-on "dark sherry" experience, but the first-fill sherry onslaught leaves little room for anything else, which is a shame. The casks are simply too (hyper)active - after a couple of sips you’re basically tasting a leather-and-cloves cocktail. I'm sure 28-year-old Glengoyne would have more to say if you didn't drown out its voice with oak and seasoning sherry.

Oily, oaky, resiny and thick, with mocha, dark chocolate, wood oils, cola, chicory, black pepper, and licorice. Extremely long and sticky.

Some whiskies are just worth writing the required review.

Only once in my life did I have a whisky in the glass that was better than this one by more than daily form.

If I only look at the last few years, Glengoyne has performed considerably better than their competition. Their perfect combination of bitter spices, a manifold of versatile harmonic and oily notes and heavy fruit culminate in this release and the current 25yo.

This truly is one of these "The One" whiskies.

A great Glengoyne, so far the best I've had by the glass from this distillery. The nose is not that outstanding, I have already had the aromas with others, for example Blair Athol. All the more convincing on the palate. The texture and the aromas form a harmonious and balanced symbiosis. A mouth that was covered by a creamy and long-lasting, fruity-sweet cherry aroma remains in memory - October 17, 2020

Nice old-matured and dusty-dry sherry aroma, slightly musty, roasted aromas of fresh coffee, Amarena cherry, Mon-Cherie, rum raisins, dates, baked apples, plum compote, polish, old furniture, roasted pumpernickel, caramelized nuts
    • Taste
      93 93
Very sweet, ripe cherry, oak spice tingles on the tip of the tongue, wonderfully creamy and oily, the malt sweetness is intense and caramelized, after a long chew a nice spice potpourri crystallizes out, cinnamon, clove, lovage, liquid chocolate, dried fruits, dates, vanilla sugar, very much beautifully balanced, soft, silky, at the end there is a concise but balanced oak bitterness

You don't want to stop smelling it ..
There is a brief moment in the mouth where it seems a bit watery to me, but that is whining on a very high level. The finish is long and wonderful. For more specific notes, please have a look at lechiffre, I prefer to continue enjoying ...
