[May, 2020] A quick review of a small sample....

...that is a very interesting old-style dram with a rather unusual profile (for modern drinkers). I like it but it is not the stuff to quaff a bottle in one go - to be honest.

By the way, my best guess given the aromas and flavours profile is either Dalwhinnie or Blair Athol. According to Angus this should be a Glenmorangie but it is the most unusual Glenmorangie I ever tasted, for sure. But to be honest: Who ever tasted a 34+years old Glenmorangie from the mid-eighties before (I did not)...

The colour is old gold and the nose offers an interesting but rather unusual profile with lots of heather impressions (both flowers and honey), grasses, herbs and distant whiffs of smoke. Very shy fruits only but a lot of old-style waxes and oils. It reminds me a little of the old North Port or Coleburn profiles but both were closed in 1985 already. This certainly is a nose for old-style whisky lovers (like me).
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is sweeter than the nose with again almost no fruits in there but both delicious barley sugars and honeys. This sweetness is nicely countered by rather bitter herbs and waxes which balance the taste again. There are shy impressions of smoke and stronger leathery and spicy flavours. Very interesting to explore and yes, I like to quaff this stuff (but I am not sure if modern drinkers will like it too).

The dram arrives warming and coating on the palate without distracting moments. The finish is of medium length and adds a significant cardboardy impression towards the end which is somewhat distracting. Besides this some imteresting notes of cocoa beans (you know, they are rather bitter) and autumn leaves join in as well. Water releases more honey and waxy aromas in the nose and turns the taste sweeter with some hints of milk chocolate. I like to explore this dram neat and then add a little water for my drinking pleasure.

somewhat delicate and subtle with slightly fruity and sour flavors, subtle notes of old and dry oak. Slightly tickles the nose (a hint of menthol?) A hint of caramel / toffee. A while later: more aromatic in appearance, the fruity components complement each other with the aromas of dry oak. Hint of smoke?

pleasant with a light spice of dark honey, slightly fruity, candied lemon, fine dry oak, sweetly bitter, a little barrel, a little perfumed. The oak notes are now delicately tart, trace of smoke. Very tasty and coherent, nothing corners or disturbs.

initially with a delicate tart oak and maybe a hint of coffee, then slightly fruity and a little sweet, very pleasant. Some smoke here too. Finally, slightly malty with a hint of dried fruit?

With such a taste profile, I confidently do without a distillery name ...
    • Nose
A tightly woven mix of sweet, sour and bitter notes ... quasi umami! Yeast, bitter orange, fennel seeds, some anise and generally a colorful bouquet of spices, wild berries ... and a tiny pinch of smoke.
    • Taste
The acid disappears from the nose, but in the foreground sweet and woody, warming, again countless spices.
    • Finish
Pleasantly bitter, noticeable wood, eternal aftertaste.

Nice, rather dense aromas, but at times, some alcohol singe. Honey, lemon, apricots, roasted shaved coconuts, and cinnamon.
    • Taste
      89 89
Limoncello, black tea, a hint of honey. There is some leather and oak, belying its age. It's good, but I would not say this is absolutely enjoyable. The oak really is quite loud, almost like a bourbon.
    • Finish
      88 88
Has a bit of mezcal and bourbon aftertaste. A bit too much oak probably. Not a total star.

    Color: Burnished.

With shaking (no, that wasn't panning anymore) the whisky can be motivated to reveal some aromas, it is filigree, but not as thin as the '83 Secret Highlander, which appeared in spring.
    • Nose
___________________. 5 minutes: _____________________. Close the window: ... 10 minutes: dried apricots, plantains with honey, after eight, pine needles, water mint, lemon peel. River water, rotten wood. Jasmine flowers, freshly poured plants in the greenhouse, orange peel. With water, probably not a good idea: Lighter, freshly felled wood, more mint. Some dry wood, vanilla.
    • Taste
Soot, dried apricots, ripe pears, orange peel, bergamot, acacia honey. First oily, it becomes increasingly thinner and more bitter. Strong coffee, scorched wood, charred orange peel, ripe mirabelle plum. Water mint, brackish water. With water: nope. Skipped the delicious Part 1, but more bitter. No thanks.
    • Finish
Long. Water mint, river water, resin, chestnut blossom, is becoming increasingly bitter, more flaky, as if one had chewed on a leaf for a long time, fortunately this is compensated for by a good amount of After Eight.
