    • Nose
At first very hearty. Then slowly getting sweeter. Works hard and set. Hard to grab. But interesting. In the background a hint of smoke.
    • Taste
Creamy and mouth filling. Little sweetie. Hard and almost a bit bitter. Lots of dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Occupies the tongue. Will be dry and a little bit harsh.

A real Highland Park. Just that little bit of smoke that adds an extra dimension to nose, touch and finish.
    • Nose
A touch of smoke (heather). Sweet (honey). Show vanilla and a little butter. Also, tropical fruits such as banana, pineapple.
    • Taste
After the non-unpleasant smoky taste of honey. South fruits like banana and pineapple.
    • Finish
Sweet with a touch of smoke. Mid-length.

  4. Kaltduscher scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Sweet. Honey. Dried apricots. Citrus fruits. Heather. Lemongrass.
    • Taste
A sweet start with honey. Juicy pears. Getting sharper.
    • Finish
Medium long and slightly dry. Initial honey sweetness. Malt. Some oak. Smoky towards the end.

Sorry I'm not writing reviews in a very balanced way so please take it like this.

I love Highland Park and after falling in love with the 1994 I was eager to buy and drink the 1998. For me it was like drinking whisky from a different distillery. All I loved in the 1994 I was missing in the 1998 - not so smooth, not so well balanced, the cask too dominant, no oily taste I was expecting and it goes on - a different league of whisky, drunken with a different expectation by me. So take the review as it is - unbalanced and highly personal.

Lovely and friendly priced Highland Park. Around 40 EUR.
    • Nose

The nose is slightly mineraly (flints) and shows quite
a bit of grain and caramel. Nice smokiness with that typical Orkney peat, with
loads of heater. Honey makes it round, while mint keeps it fresh. The caramel
evolves into toffee. Leave it long enough and you will even get some chocolat
      milk. Inviting.
    • Taste

On the palate, it is immediately obvious that this was
mostly from sherry casks. Spicy on liquorice and cloves. Caramelized apple,
hazelnuts, sweet malt and hints of coffee. Midpalate it turns slightly bitter.
    • Finish

The medium long finish continues mostly on salty
      liquorice and is pretty drying.

    Producer`s Tasting Notes
Appearance: Rich, golden, clear and bright.

Nose: Opaque honey, dried grass with ginger spicy notes. Dried apricot emerges late.

    Palate: The

vanilla and honey sweetness developed from a dozen years in American

oak is perfectly balanced with the emergence of the aromatic heather

peat smoke. Sweet notes of cinnamon and cashew nuts emerge.

Finish: Sweet with medium lingering spice and smoke.

Another piece of art by Highland Park. More subtle than the regular 12 year old, probably because we're talking about American Oak this time. This also shows in the shorter finish. Vanilla sweetness combined with a slight tingle that ends in a lovely smoky aftertaste. Recommended.
    • Nose
Sweetness of honey, again, but this time there's more hints of vanilla than anything else. Smokiness occurs too, but less obviously.
    • Taste
Again, the sweetness reminds one more of vanilla than honey. Still it is floral, though, but this is a more timid, more "shy" whisky. Also, there's a light tingle on the tongue further along the taste.
    • Finish
Softer than the regular 12 year old. Still sweet, but again, the sweetness is not really in your face. More in the background, but persistent nonetheless. The smokiness at the end reassures one this is a Highland Park.

"Released in April 2010, this litre bottle vintage edition of Highland

Park was distilled in 1998, the year of the distillery`s bicentenary and

was originally only available in travel retail. Fruity, with a honeyed

sweetness after 12 years maturation in American oak."

  13. Lafroy scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Malted barley, citrus notes, dried lemon peel, light acetone notes, subtle smoke and pear sweetness.
    • Taste
Green apples, citrus notes, light fruit sweetness, delicate smoke and white pepper. A lot of barley in the aftertaste with metallic and dry notes to it.
    • Finish
Short, smoky and hot with hints of pepper and roots.
