Whisky Reviews for Springbank 1978

- Joa, quite disappointing for what he should be, looked quite stale though newly opened bottle, he had nice sweetness at least in the mouth, the strongest part. Departure and nose were quite lame.
Stuck, hay, old books, macadamia nuts, almonds, old malt, fennel, dry leather, curd soap, hints of vanilla and apricot
Apricot with a lot of sugar, much sweeter than in the nose, dessert wine, honeydew melon, mushy pear, lychee, light malt, cocoa bean
Hay, malt, almonds and apple skin, medium length
- Pretty OK and drinkable but for sure not on the highest level of old Springbanks
Green fruits, leafy and grassy notes, minerals, limestone, limes, green apples, green bananas, honeydew, whiffs of vanilla too - pretty OK
Oily, sirupy, subtle sweetness, more green fruits, also hints of green tea, little herbal, more minerals, little vanilla
Medium long, warm, little fruity, little sweet, little herbal, a tad bitter
- Kind of a shame it feels like the end 70s distillery labels bottlings aren’t as enjoyable as the early 70s when I tried it head to head with the 1972, still drinkable but not unforgettable
Without water, the odors are interlinked quite closed. Some exotic fruits are to be found, cereals, sea spray. Even breathing does not let him thaw so much.
So water march:
Great fruity scents rise from the glass: freshly cut mangos, papayas, a hint of banana and passion fruit, accompanied by salty sea air. Subtle milk chocolate with a little cinnamon. The smoke is dry and most reminiscent of coal smoke. Cereals and a slight smell of stable.
Again many exotic fruits, a pinch of pepper and a little clove. A nice, creamy mouthfeel underlines the flavors. Some cereals and seawater. Everything is accompanied by subtle, dry smoke which also brings something stable here.
Long, here smoky and very spicy oak, barely sweet.
A very delicious time, when he has opened first. Very oldschoolig and dirty, which offers a nice contrast to the fruit.
- Tasted 2cl at The Whisky Fair 21/04/18
Short notes: Fresh, papaya, peach, light sweetness, coastal breeze/salty, hay. Tastes: fresh fruity attack where after a second or 2 it becomes much creamier and mouth coating. Lovely that turn around from light fresh to creamy.
This style I really miss nowadays... Very good whisky at 17yo
