Whisky Reviews for M&H 2017 JWC

Sweet and sugary, the name of the distillery could very well have just been a description of the bottle. At two and a half years old, it was impossible not to pick up some spirited youth and heat on this dram, yet there was a good deal of malty sweet complexity with lovely notes of fruit. I enjoyed the fruity-floral complexity of the nose, especially with a bit of water added to it, while the palate was a bit sweet and simple for my taste without any of the rich fruity complexity to which the nose seemed to nod. This was pleasant to sip on and Single Cask Nation does pick some remarkable casks to bottle. I can easily see how this would really appeal to bourbon drinkers looking to expand their horizons, fans of M&H distillery, or the Single Cask Nation faithful.
    • Nose
Sugary fruits and wildflower honey. The nose is loaded with sweet fruit and floral notes: orange skins, tropical fruit preserves, citrus and lime granita, fruity herbal tea, unripened peaches, and a hint of vanilla. A bit of water helps bring out more fruity notes, otherwise the nose is a bit spirited and hot.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied and oily with a nice sweet profile. Honey and malt stand out with a bit of vanilla pudding. Nutty notes of roasted peanuts and sesame seeds come alive with crusty bread and sweet honey butter. Notes of chili pepper water, wood polish, and sweet tea come through on the finish.
    • Finish
Medium length thick honey, peppers, and gentle wood spice.

Single Cask Nation Retail Release #6 Now In The US!

Milk & Honey 2yo, 1st fill Bourbon Barrel

This cask bottling (from Israel), distilled in June 2017, spent two years maturing in a 1st fill bourbon barrel. It was bottled at cask strength in December 2019 at 59.85% ABV. Cask #0118 yielded 256 bottles.

    Color: Bright sunshine

Nose: Luxurious and buttery malt presence on the nose is exquisitely balanced by the oak with warm oak spice coming to the fore, complemented by fired Meyer lemon zest, Vietnamese coffee, fresh dandelion greens, warm honey and white peony tea

Palate: A good bit of spice up front but the soft oily texture shields the drinker from any alcohol burn. Fists full of malted barley, rich yellow fruits, more warm honey, and freshly whipped cream give way to gooseberry jam notes that are accompanied by a slightly salty tang before the return of bright citrus as it transitions to the rear of the palate

Finish: A pleasing creaminess resides on the tongue long after the liquid has gone. The memory is zesty, spicy and citrusy and lasts for a very long time.

On the label: Rich and buttery malt presence on the nose with warm oak spice and notes of citrus zest. Wonderful balance between the sweet and spicy elements and let’s not forget the rich mouthfeel and citrusy finish!

    Recommended Retail Price: $90/bottle
