Whisky Reviews for Avonside 1938 AsW

  1. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

My favorite from the 30s & 40s tasting, has retained the most aroma and depth, beautiful tropical notes, reminiscent of a 70s Speyside region tamed but still full of life ...
    • Nose
Aromatic to the ceiling, marzipan, white chocolate, hazelnut, pecan, toffee and honey, banana, amarena cherry, buttery-sweet, some white tea, rose water, sweet, slightly mushy pear, this pear is becoming more intense with time, mango
    • Taste
The sweet pear spreads wonderfully, very aromatic and full again, tropical honey, papaya, orange blossom water, rose water, lavender, green and white tea, fennel, eucalyptus, mandarin and honeydew melon, white chocolate and marzipan
    • Finish
Slightly drier, sweet and dry, still papaya, marzipan, fine oak and sweet malt, long to very long

Lincolnimp already said most things about this whisky below. A gentle Old skool Glenlivet (Avonside was The Glenlivet Single Malt) although not a real stunner. These Avonsides were bottled in the early 1970's by G&M for the legendary Italian bottler Edoardo Giaccone. In those days G&M were bottling all their Coinnoisseur's Choice at 40%. Giaccone probably requested a higher bottling strength.
    • Nose
Delicate dusty sweetness with lightly bees-waxed furniture intermingled with orange peel and tangerines. Dried apricots and figs as well. Nice oak. Old leather at the background.
    • Taste
Gingery with a touch of vanilla fudge. Hints of smoked peat are present too. Becomes better later on with some soft sherry (wood) influence. It's quite woody overall, but yet somehow graceful. I have to admit it's also a little thin.
    • Finish
Medium long. Spice and pepper at first. Clove. A little liquorice. Quite some menthol notes at the end. Well balanced. To me the whisky seems a bit 'tired' with slightly too much woodiness. The nose is the best part imho.

I think this this has lost a bit of power but it has been in the bottle 48 years plus the 35 years in a barrel.
The nose is a little shy and the palate in parts a little weak but there is more peat than I was expecting and some great sweet notes than more than make up for this.
This is an elegant sophisticated whisky that you need to be gentle with and take your time, some may find it a little tame but it has much to reward you.
89 points + 1 points for the palma violet sweetness.

Slightly dusty on first nosing with hints of honey, lemon & perhaps mango but they are not expressive so this one has a shy nose.
There is also a raw mushroom note which is fine but unusual mixed with a little almond.
A little orange marmalade emerges and the faintest wisps of menthol.
It does seem to develop in intensity after 5 minutes or so but , this is an elegant shy nose.
After another 5 mins a little ginger and white pepper.

Surprising, a blast of peat at first then a fruit salad combo with candied sugar, I was not expecting the peat, the nose gave no hint of this.
Now the pepper that is on the nose arrives with other mixed spice and mixes with the peat and the the fruit is there, hints of pineapple , mango , apple but stewed and sugared but its brown sugar.
    • Finish
      90 90
Renaining sweet, the peat also last until the end with a lovely palma violet note on the tail which is a real bonus.
Right at the end I can detect some oak but the sweetness on the tail more than compensates this.

Any notes with that kind of a rating on such an old whisky...? I guess rather not.
