The softer side of Ardbeg. In the nose great, you can lose yourself in it. Still at a high level when drinking, but lacking a bit of magic. The aftertaste could be a little longer and contain more fruit. For the full review go here:

Wonderful oily texture with plenty of rich flavour despite the low abv, mainly on smoked citrus oil, creamy engine oils, and salted tropical fruit. Delicious.

A great nose which unfortunately does not keep all its promises.
The 1978 and 1977 parallel buses were more pleasing to my taste.

Nice nose with a precise and chiselled peat.
Zest of lemon and bergamot, pepper.
      Ash, fir, spray.
      Light engine oil.
      Caramelized apricot skin.

In the mouth it is more acidic.
Ashy peat, lemony, with orange, bergamot, grapefruit.
      Pepper, light ginger.
      Fudge, smoke, burnt bacon.
      Pretty unbalanced.
      43%, really?

The nose was less convincing at first and is never really great according to the taste, but in the mouth it knocks you straight away from the start, great Ardi.
    • Nose
Hmm, sourdough? Salt & Pepper, cumin, camphor, needs time and heat to get away from the young bread dough, some resin and capers, very smooth overall, green apple and some kiwi, macadamia and almonds
    • Taste
Wow, completely different strength here, more intense start as if it had 5-8% more than in the nose, camphor, green and red apple, kiwi, grapefruit, orange, finest ash, autumn leaves, coal, really nice rough malt, zucchini, wild, great bourbon sherry cask mixture, intense and yet perfectly balanced, algae, walnut, sourdough, nutmeg, allspice and a little capers
    • Finish
Nice apple, pear, liquorice, tick coffee, allspice, melon, a hint of eucalyptus, long

  7. pere scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Sweet smoke, leather, maritime, a bit of wood, heather, a hint of grass, wood tar.
    • Taste
Smoky, drier, salt, a bit of oak, allspice, cloves, peat, iodine.
    • Finish
Fruity sweetness, smoke, salt, vanilla, roasted.

Typical 70s ardbeg, Coastal peat, citrus, very balanced but lacks a bit of punch

Compared to 2001, the nose is better, mouth and finish worse 2001er:
    • Nose
immediately after pouring without movement: mild, chocolate, apricots, vanilla, wood, later with Bwegung: fruity, Bourbon, full aromas, intense smell of very ripe pulp, vanilla, cloves, caramel and citrus hardly perceive
    • Taste
mild onset with chocolate powder, smoke, ripe fruit, spicy, clove, chocolate powder, clove and smoke remains on the palate
    • Finish
medium, for a Ardbeg a rather weak finish, some smoke and clove

Medium-bodied. Classic! Very different from Ardbeg bottled nowadays, for me more elegant and subtle - just beautifully so! I just love the sweet and punchy smoke in this one, wow. Just picturing how insanely good this would have been at a higher ABV is mind-boggling :D

Tasted blind as the last and 24th whisky of my 2016 whisky advent calendar. What a great conclusion.
    • Nose
Sweet but very present peat smoke, some spicy leather, heather or flowers mixed with a faint strawberry jam note, malty and cereal-like liquorice, candied apples, full and spicy oak, fruity resin, a sweet and earthy element, some sherry(?), somewhat coastal/maritime, zesty dried red fruits, some pepper, old rope from a ship, some caramel, cream, a tad of vanilla, freshly polished wooden boards.
    • Taste
Smoke, zesty cream, leather, honey, some sherry (?), earthiness, toasted oak, dark and malty cereal notes, liquorice, woody caramel and vanilla.
    • Finish
Medium to long - gently smoked and sweet malt, coastal saltiness, dried fruits, some nuttiness, quite peppery towards the end, with a really nice citrus presence throughout.

Sweet licorice, salt, dry, slightly bitter, leather

  16. The Macallan scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

Tasted it at the distillery many many years ago!

Nose: sea shore, briney smokiness, very clean.

Palate: very smooth, some sweet spicy notes with a light touch of peat.

Finish: lovely spicyness with some sweety notes.

    Great DRAM
