Whisky Reviews for Ardmore 1998 ElD
10 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.78 points
- Nice bourbon barrel matured whisky, which for me benefits a lot from the addition of water.
Fresh and crisp, very light smoke, light vanilla, some apple. Unfortunately, very closed and something in the background is easily annoying, something sour.
Much nicer, more open and fruity with water. More apples, plus citrus, mandarins and menthol. It also looks a little smokier with water.
Quite powerful, oily, some oak, apple.
Water also helps in the mouth, now very crunchy, lots of apples, a little lemon, the smoke is also more present. Very nice.
Powerful, tangy finish, very nice.
[Without water] More yeasty/fermentary and acidic than WID 132095. Even though this one is nominally a year older, it seems younger, but also – paradoxically, perhaps – less smoky. Vanilla custard, natural yoghurt, lime, tangerine.
[With water] No big change initially, but after the first diluted sip it does become noticeably more harmonious – and also more obviously and deliciously peaty.
85 points without, but almost 88 points with water.
[Without water] Silky, oily arrival – great texture – with more peat in the middle and crisp spices shaping the third act. However, the fermentary character of the nose persists on the palate, creating a somewhat lactic impression (sour milk), which definitely subtracts a few points for me.
[With water] Sweeter, and the lactic impression is gone, replaced by complex, fragrant peat and a juicy fruit note that segues into the finish. Much, much better with H2O.
Spicy, earthy, leathery, with a bit of citric acidity, sugared apricot and a creamy custard vibe. Long.

Where is the spark? (87)
The aroma is juicy fruits, soft peat, lemon tart, peach skin, banana, sweet pastries ... green apple juice, shower without gas (22)
Fruits and ash (22)
Finish long, fruit and viscous ginger with wood .... lemon water, a little wax (21)
- Lovely oily tropical fruit mixed with a mineral edge, with more chalky smoke and earthy peat than some other more gentle versions of 90’s Ardmore, giving it a slightly bitter bite on the finish.

- Orchard fruits, some exotic fruits, some dirtiness, very nice
- Great nose with definite development
One of my favorite distilleries !
It's a pity that the Elixir Distillers has problems with the balance again...

Sample from a well-breathed bottle. The balance has leveled and the nose and the finish have become even better!
