Raisins, brown sugar, milk chocolate, bit of orange, leather, mono dimensional and boring

Give it at least 5 minutes to let the flavours open up. A dangerous easy sipper, can hardly recognize any strength in it. Have taken some great influence from sherry casks. Palate surprised the nose as it wasn’t as watery as expected. It’s no doubt a well-managed dram, but £110? Factor out the Macallan and GM branding premium and decide for yourself whether it’s worth the price.

[78-82] Good buy when I've extra money to spend, most whisky stays within this band.

    N 26
Delicate and fruity. Very sherry (sultana, figs). Some runny honey behind the fruit. Getting more vinous grape syrup over time, as well as some citrusy. Leaving it to oxidize further and I’m getting white rabbit candy sweetness

    P 25
Creamy. Spices dancing all over, dominant yet not aggressive (peppery, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg). Oak and fruit notes going in parallel. Malty. Butterscotch

    F 24
Mid-short finish. Malty. Baking spices, chewy fruit gums, and some raisins lingering. Touch of tannin bitterness and menthol

Macallan 2005-2019 Speymalt Gordon Macphail 43%. Consumed Dec 2020. Aroma is pink mice sweets, marshmallow. Cranberry. Later on some stove gas. Teresa thinks it smells like brandy and I can get that. Taste is very soft on the delivery. Vinous oak. Alcoholic spice. A plain oaky delivery with some fullness and roundness. Ultimately a bit of a damp squib. A little spicy oak, like a French oak wine cask might have been used. It's just about ok. Not 'furry' oak but it's just a bit ploddy and muddled - like a mixture of spirits - lacking complexity. 3.05/73

      Polish, solvent, suprisingly young.

Wow, nothing from the nose is imminent on the mouth. Burnt sugar, sweetness, spices, light pepper. This in combination with candy and peartones.
    • Finish
      82 82
Bitter almond that lasts, burnt sugar. A short, rough finish.

Nice whisky, improves with time & likes a splash of water. Nothing outstanding for me, but certainly a nice dram.
Sweet & sour & bit of savory.
    Maybe -1 for price & abv. So 88 -1 = 87

Pleasant enough - nothing to write home about though.
    • Nose
Dried leafs on the nose, with a hint of orange.
    • Taste
Slightly bland, although some citrus notes come through.
    • Finish
      Medium length - some spice.

N: Malty sweet – very malty sweet, cream-icing sweet,… moreish dessert smorgasbord-sweet with a few sips of white coffee. However, it isn’t saccharine sweet so it makes for a delicious dessert dram on the nose.

T: Soft edgy sweet grassy ~> chalky arrival, a little water going a long way to promote the well-tempered/balanced and moreish [yet restrained] sherried raisin maltiness, again a touch grassy. Tastes older than it is. Perhaps that’s a perception born from its slight softness? Maybe it didn’t work so well at 46%, or even 45 or 44%?

F: With a malty > chalky mouthfeel and chew throughout, we conclude with numerous glimpses of dried fruits in various forms along with a very quiet rootsy aniseed note.

C: This is one Ralfy picked out and I can see why. There’s something beguiling about it, an honest vulnerability without the need for a noticeable heavy-handed finishing. Good whisky/price ratio given the distillery.

Flavoursome, surprisingly full bodied and rich Macallan. This one would kill majority of current official offerings from this distillery. It all tastes generic compared to this one. The only Macallan I have for drinking in my possession. Its well balanced dram with the trademark Macallan orange (marmalade, preserved peels, ripe sweet oranges), apples, pears and chocolate. The casks just complementing the spirit. I only wish this would be 46% + and NCF. Outstanding value for money. (As of 2020)

"Once you've added water, the unfolding dram of this malt is very singular and it's really really interesting. And it's pretty damn good. Very very much so."

I'm really surprised, usually Macallan is not my cup of tea ... Maybe it's because of the curfew (Corona), but I really like this malt right now. Super balance between spirit and barrel. Not a complexity monster, but still so pleasant and smooth. There is 1 extra point for the PLV (£ 66). I had to put 2 bottles back: D

EDIT: The basic character of the painting actually reminds me of the A Speyside Distillery 1977 (WB ID 81515).
    • Nose
Apricot, creme brulee, custard, orange peel, milk chocolate and some caramel fudge. The alcohol is wonderfully integrated.
The subtle oak in the background completes the overall picture. So great!
    • Taste
The malt is silky smooth and oily on the tongue.
Round and pleasing without appearing boring.
Pear peel, walnut, plum, coconut and a nice spicy.
      Big sips are recommended.
    • Finish
      Short to medium.
Chocolate raisins and a slight bitterness (not disturbing)
      Very pleasant.

I tasted this with an open mind because it was an IB but was sceptical because OB Macallan of this age is pretty lacklustre to say the least so if they sell casks off what are they like?
This is bland and boring with very little depth of profile so its one dimensional in my view.
The problem I had with it was that it was too manufactured and had no discernible character.
For £75 is has an awful quality/price ratio, I thought it would be around the £40 mark.
It is certainly drinkable and not a write off but for £75 GM are taking the Mickey out of anyone who buys it, this is a £30 tasting whisky max.
