Nice round Irishman, not too overloaded. Absolutely something for the nose. He's really good there. It does not quite hold the aromas on the palate. Still worthwhile.
    • Nose
      88 88
Initially slightly scratchy on the nose, a bit alcoholic, typical sherry note, you still get plums, raisins and dates. A little orange zest with a nice, slightly syrupy note of forest honey. This alcoholic scratching quickly gives way to a light spice note with nutmeg and a little cinnamon, nice and subtle in the background. A little dark chocolate with resin and furniture polish still gets through. Everything seems rather deep and heavy here, but in no way overloaded. Nice round and versatile nose.
    • Taste
      86 86
Oily, somewhat juicy with oranges, ripe bananas. Sparkling, spicy and spicy, great pot-still character, dark fruits and chocolate dominate, in the background the sweet with a note of cinnamon. Oak wort with a nice malt taste.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium-length finish, dry, chocolate, spices, a little leather and chewing tobacco round it all off.

Mainly the roasted aromas remain and that for a fairly long time.

Really interesting part. Above all, I find the liquorice, which I clearly perceive, funny. I haven't had it so strong with any whisky before.
    • Nose
Forest honey. Plum wine. Rum raisins. Some cough syrup. Licorice snails and salmiak lozenges. Orange with clove. In addition, forest floor and removes rotten wood. Menthol tobacco and anise.
    • Taste
Molasses. Rum pot. Licorice snails again. Anise. Also memories of brandy. Then comes the oak with seasoning. Dark chocolate with orange pieces.
    • Finish
Sour wild berries. Licorice. Cinchona bark.

Blindly, one would be mistaken: a cognac on the rancio of very low sweetness

    Raisin Bread

The guests of the German hotel Essener Hof are presented with an Irish whisky from time to time thanks to the close collaboration with bottler Rolf Kaspar. This is a 13 years old from 2006, bottled at cask strength from a former PX cask. Wonderful color.

Very bright and sweet nose on raisins, Reine Claude plums and fresh figs that slowly come together in a veritable raisin bread. I have not even tasted it, but I already know this is going to be liquid dessert. Hint of broth, cognac and ketchup – this is not a joke! And it works, too. Delicious nose.

The body is oily to even syrupy. Immediately pretty piquant on candied ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon and a truckload of cloves. Then the dark and sweet notes follow: raisins, plums, figs and dates, upholstered with some earth and chocolate. A lovely bitter note like chicory. This is grand and complex.

The finish is long, warm, spicy and very satisfying.

I close my eyes and release a joyful sigh. This is the good stuff. Thanks to my whisky buddy Benny for the sample.
