    • Nose
Rhubarb compote, apple, strawberry and grass.
    • Taste
Rhubarb, apple, almond and raspberry. Water adds pecan nut.
    • Finish
      Strawberry, apple, pecan and caramel.

I bought my bottle for €105 a few years ago. Seeing todays prices makes me a bit sad. Reviewing this one for the second time after some oxidation. The first time I was impressed. Curious what it will bring me this time. Time to compare.
    • Nose
Besides everything I wrote earlier I get quite some leather now as well. It seems oxidation made it appear more mature. The apple and pear flavors made place for more and more prominent berry flavors. Loads of ripe flavors. Well beyond it’s age. Still fruity as hell like a good Elgin should be.
    • Taste
Still sweet & creamy upon arrival. Where the first time gave some fresh fruits, the focus is now clearly about dark fruited flavors. Better balance and more depth thanks to oxidation I’d say.
    • Finish
Long, sweet, creamy and slightly silky. Beautiful dark forest fruits, mocha and sherry oak. Also leather comes back again.

One could argue about the price of this bottle but in my opinion one couldn’t deny the quality that’s going on here. Oxidation definitely did good, resulting in a whisky that’s way beyond it’s age. I consider myself lucky still having another full bottle in my collection. If you find one close to release price (€105) you definitely shouldn’t hesitate and buy it!

Direct comparison with this Glen Elgin 2006 AD from the Refill Bourbon Cask # 802273:
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/133112/glen-elgin-2006-ad

Despite the similarities in the basic data, I would not have blindly guessed the same distillery. Both are good malts, but still a long way from triggering enthusiasm.
My feeling after adding a little water is also different. While the 133112 (Bourbon) clearly benefits, you have to be careful with the 156026 (Sherry), here the sharpness increases and makes it unround.
    • Nose
      86 86
Diverse, but not too intense, sherry notes. Raisins, plum jam, nuts, ripe apples, at times menthol freshness. A little honey and vanilla. A few drops of water also release dry oak notes.
    • Taste
      82 82
Phew, divided. On the one hand there is the oily mouthfeel, with all the sherry flavors from the nose. Above all, there is an overly sharp spiciness on the tongue, which makes it difficult for the pleasant aromas to get through to the taste buds.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium length and warming. Intense pepper spiciness, light syrup sweetness, oak flavor.

Interesting. Water changes this malt for the worse. The mouthfeel becomes thinner, but the sharpness increases again and makes it appear more unbalanced.

This is a patience-needed bottle. I scored it 83 when first opened, but after more than three weeks in the bottle, I observed a big jump in all three categories.
    • Nose
      88 88
Fresh apricot, followed by dried prune. Fruit black tea with honey added. Fruit stew. Ripe apple peel and pear peel. Also oxidised pineapples, banana bread. Cookies with raisins. Decent smell especially it's been opened for three weeks, I would only give the nosing 86 points when it was first opened. Woody from the emptied glass.
    • Taste
      87 87
Rich pineapple fruit tea, pear juice with bitter peel, assorted stoned fruits, punchy citrus zest, finished with spices mixed with earth and mineral.
    • Finish
      87 87
Butter cookies. Pear peel turned into a splash of woody bitterness. A touch of dried fruits. Mineral plus a bit of cinnamon and dates. It's also nutty and black tea towards the end.

Pleasantly surprised with this one, different but tasty profile.

Not a big sherry nose, but it has the dried fruits, apricots, dates, and raisins, light furniture polish, honey, vanilla, underneath there are dark berries, plums, black cherries, even blueberries, very ripe red apple, vague leather or light tobacco leaf. Not bad, but quite closed, and not very big.
    • Taste
      90 90
Alcohol level is fine, there is some bite, and good warmth, but then comes a good dose of muscovado sugar along with sweet spearmint, thick and sweet apple juice, notes of cinnamon, light oaky wood spices, some barley, dried cranberry astringency, actually quite nice, and good balance. Second chew brings more dried berries, especially that dried cranberry, more toffee, freshly grated ginger, very light smoke, and it's still very sweet. A bit too sweet to be honest, but otherwise very nice. Third chew is thicker, now it's turned into minty molasses, syrup with spices and ginger. Very interesting, and actually not bad.
    • Finish
      89 89
Light smoke, ginger, toffee, dried cranberries, maple syrup cinnamon, molasses, and also a bit of espresso. As it fades out the sweetness goes down, which is very nice. Quite long finish.

Dried apricots, raisins, country hunters. Behind it lemons, sour cherries and mint.
    • Taste
Red apples, sulphured raisins and a slightly metallic heat. Lemon, orange, warm mineral water.

Classy sherry bomb.Complex, reach, very satisfying.

    • Nose
      87 87
Sweet syrupy sherry notes, some fresh leather and shoe polish. Both fresh and dried plum, dried apricot, sultana raisins, some figs and blackberries. Later on: hard candy and a slight nuttiness.
    • Taste
      87 87
Sweet and thick, a continuation of all the dried fruit notes from the nose, mainly plum, sultana's, figs and some sweeter peach/pear like note. Slight cocoa, quite a nippy alcohol bite on the tongue, peppery wood dust and some clove.
    • Finish
      88 88
Pretty long: sweet dried fruits, now lots of chocolate and cocoa notes, dries out into well balanced and warming wood spice.

This one is really delicious: espresso coffee, dark chocolate, deep sherry notes and in the aftertaste something of a nice autumn buck beer with both sweet and a little bitter in the taste.

Glen Elgin is one of those distilleries I haven’t really payed attention to yet. Until now.. since I bought a line up of 6 different Elgin’s in age, casktype and pricerange. This is the second one. Prior to this I had a 12yo from DD. This one surprised me quite well so I have some expectations for this one.
    • Nose
The nose gives a fresh but dark arrival at the same time. The freshness of orchard fruits I experienced with the previous one, immediately takes it’s place here, but it’s being combined with beautiful thick sherry notes. It’s really good to recognize Glen Elgin despite of the active sherry cask this was in. I get ripe red apples and pear, besides this I get sweet red fruits. Fresh & dried combined. Berries, dates, sultana’s, sugared candy and milk chocolate. I also get some espresso beans. It’s a beautiful and rather complex nose.
    • Taste
Sweet & creamy arrival. Great balanced, alcohol very well integrated. Very think body but not dominated by sherry. It gives to me a beautiful play between fresh and dark fruits. And although the darker side is more prominent on the palate, it is still able to give a dimensional experience. The whole gets a pleasant ‘bite’ due to the pepper that’s in it at the end.
    • Finish
The finish is incredibly soft, balanced and delicately. Impressive stuf!! It gives more of the wood influences here and also several Arabic spices comes in. I get thick red fruit juice, a nice wee freshness of apple. On the spicy side I get cinnamon, mocha, coriander and a whiff of smoked paprika powder.

Again a convincing bottling of Glen Elgin! The sherry cask influences married very well to the fresh and fruity Elgin character.

Candy sweets on sherry; brush your teeth when finishing your dram.
    • Nose
      88 88
Well, this is what you experience when entering a candy store. Fill up a sherry cask with the candy and this is the result. After some time in the glass, sherry notes get more dominant over candy.
    • Taste
      87 87
Sherry sweetness continues in the taste. I had expected less sherry influence as we are talking about a refill cask. Slightly stinging mouth feeling. Warm. Very mature for a 14 y old whisky
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long to long. No change w.r.t. the taste notes.

Sherry whisky with an exceptional sharpness and reserved sherry notes. Without this spiciness this could be a great whisky but for me it is a difficult candidate
    • Nose
      85 85
Nice fruity but well integrated and not dominating sherry notes
    • Taste
      81 81
A huge ginger hotness dominates everything and that's not a good domination! The slight sherry notes behind are barely noticeable
    • Finish
      82 82
Here too, the spiciness dominates until the end, but in the background bright fruits such as mirabelle and apricot are unfortunately difficult to perceive due to the high spiciness
