Exceptional and really well matured in sherry casks, only in comparison to the overaged it falls off significantly for me
    • Nose
      89 89
In fact fairground sweetness with cotton candy, candied apples and roasted almonds
    • Taste
      85 85
... which then unfortunately pass into slightly burnt almonds in the mouth. A little like bacon-wrapped dates left on the grill a little too long.
    • Finish
      87 87
The aftertaste is more pleasant than in the mouth, the smoke quickly subsides and changes into a medium-long, sherry-sweet aftertaste. Compared to the overaged but clearly weaker

It appears that “Candid” is the replacement for Michel Couvreur’s previous “Disclosure” bottling. This is aged for 8 years in PX casks, and is a peated expression.

Full caveat: I am not a peat fan at all. My palate does appreciate certain expressions of peated whisky, but it’s not something I seek out normally. Given that, the style of peat in this Couvreur “Candid” Malt Whisky was of the medicinal, iodine variety that was a bit off-putting and not well integrated with the PX maturation.
    • Nose
      55 55
Maple syrup, roasted almonds, smoky, medicinal peat. Iodine.
    • Taste
      52 52
Medicinal peat on the front palate. Goji berries, black pepper, spiciness is present along with the peat, along with some Pedro Ximenez sherry notes, but it doesn’t feel that well integrated.
    • Finish
      53 53
Medium. The iodine and peat notes fade slowly on the finish. Some distant caramel, raisin notes.

    • Nose
      86 86
Initially penetrating sweet, sugar cane syrup, almost rum-like.
After the first sip and with a little time, malty, doughy notes come to the fore
    • Taste
      86 86
Not too sweet, almond biscuits, a little dirty but pleasant and warming.
    • Finish
      85 85
      Rather short, slightly drying.

    Blind tasting
Tried again a year later in the blender glass and upgraded one point in the nose and finish. More engine room found, much more complexity discovered. Great whiskey.

      Blind tasting:

Nice nose, very balanced, in the foreground the fruity, but there is also a slight dirtiness, no alcohol at all, definitely a sherry malt. Tap the MC Candid.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very mild, then warmer, that's how it has to be. Like the nose, nice fruitiness and again this dirtiness in the middle. Could have a little more depth, slightly bitter, go for 12 years. Sweetness is also there and good.
    • Finish
      88 88
