    Penderyn Sherrywood SMWW 46%.

This is my fourth sample of this, having tried it with friends as well as following a tour of the distillery with my family and finally at an airport, but the first time actually being able to sit down and rate it. 30ml sample.

Mid tone yellow with a slight hint of something darker.

Aroma is strongly fruity ... dragonfruit, something like gooseberry and rhubarb pie, cranberries certainly, pomegranate. Over time the berries seem a little sour and there's red wine tannin, medicinal notes, some rust. Good fruity aroma on the whole.

Taste is very relaxed, ‘creamy’, quite refined, reminds me a bit of the cleaner Scotch spirits like Brackla and Spey. Again fruited tart, clove, mulled wine, sweet cherry pie, more clove into the finish. maybe the impressions are a little too 'sweet' for my personal taste.

Blind I’d be thinking there might be some red wine casks - maybe there’s a ‘secret ingredient’! Still, it’s got plenty going on and plenty to enjoy.

Lots of flavour but it’s not quite my ideal sort of flavour profile. It’s good, well-constructed but just not really my sort of thing - sometimes you can appreciate good quality without necessarily loving the end result, and this is one of those times for me. I could see some people really loving it and I would understand why, but it’s not the sort of thing I'd want on my shelf personally. 3.375/81

On the nose, pastry notes, sweet, fruity fragrances reminiscent of mirabelle plums, raisins, more discreetly, honey, vanilla, and even caramel? In the mouth, a medium start, a mixture of fruits and rubber. It's a whisky that takes a few minutes to open. Then we find sweet fruity notes with always this plum, quetsch, raisin. A pastry side, sweet. An average finish, with remains of retro-olfactions evoking the hot stalls of a bakery.
In the end, an interesting whisky, sweet, fruity, not too complex, a small confectionery in short.

Whole whisky this. Smell is still good, but taste is strange and difficult to define. However, in the taste and finish the toffee / caramel predominates. Nice to have a drink, but a whole bottle of this stuff would not have been spent on me.
    • Nose
Leather, green apples, toffees, plums. Also some rubber, and sweet, vanilla. Then also overripe banana, and some grassy.
    • Taste
Kind of fruity but hard to define. Anyway toffee. Also something of rubber or plastic-like. Strange taste, not really dirty, not very tasty. Toffee / caramel predominates.
    • Finish
Medium, light pepper, now some citrus, and again toffee.

I did not have a bottle, but I tasted about 5 times during the festival blind tasting and during it. Solid whisky.
    • Nose
Pleasant, sweet sherry style. Honey, wood, chocolate, sweet spice, pancakes with maple syrup. (87 b)
    • Taste
A thinner body, the alcohol a little protruding. Sherry knows them. Spicy sweetness gradually recedes and the oak is being promoted. To this, vanilla, creamyness, a slight bitterness at the end. (84 b)

    • Nose
Buttyy. Almond paste. Chocolate and mint. Caramel and stroopwafel.
    • Taste
      Sherry, youghurtsnoepjes, caramel en vanille.
    • Finish
A little peppery but not unpleasant. Then very sweet. A medium aftertaste.

The original Penderyn is finished in Madeira casks. I like the original

better (which I rated an 84), as it tastes more mature and the Madeira

seems to dovetail better with the other flavors. Fruity (red raspberry,

strawberry, banana), with underlying sweet notes (honeyed vanilla,

caramel, a hint of butterscotch). Quick, clean finish.
