Another reason why I am becoming increasingly unsympathetic to one of my favorite distilleries:
It is a 12 year old whisky that has been matured in seasoned barrels. Highland Park sells countless of these bottlings - under its own name or under the label of independent bottlers. The barrels are industry standard, not exceptional. It was bottled with an increased alcohol content (therefore still over 64%!) In order to extract the optimum from the barrels in a few years of maturation.
The price that is called for this standard product at the age of 12 is outrageous. Because nobody can tell me that a special barrel selection is made for all the bottling for individual countries, airports, shops, bottlers, etc. Every usable barrel is simply being hawked at an inflated price because it is easy to do.
And that's exactly what sucks about Highland Park!

That’s a strong and yet pleasantly tasty whisky. Not overly complex, but easy to drink. With the strength that it inevitably has to have, however, dangerously tasty.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Highland Park was definitely recognizable here, but no comparison to the old HP bottlings. Very alcohol and barrel driven. Definitely one of the better ones compared to many other HP Single Casks.

Immediately after pouring, you can feel fruits pickled in alcohol, Armagnac cherries or something like that, generally restrained. After standing for a while, sherry is full, possibly some smoke, dark caramel. Over time, meaty notes and vegetable broth appear. Overall not very sweet, a bit of mint. Still quite reluctant. The nose is warmed up significantly more intensively, the dark caramel makes its way forward, there aren't many fruits, a hint of menthol and I'm still not sure about the smoke. Perfumed floral notes and acidity arrive late, but not unpleasant.
    • Taste
      87 87
Wow, I wouldn't have expected such a boisterous start! No tickling in the nose, but the alcohol content is high, very high. Yet it does not burn. Sweet, dark honey and herbs have been intensely carried by alcohol from the beginning, the smoke now seems more likely to me, even if it really should only be a few ppm. The mouthfeel is very creamy, it goes well pure. In the second sip, a clear acidity develops in the mouth, especially towards the back, and floral notes can now also be felt here.
    • Finish
      87 87
The finish is long and now I am convinced of the presence of smoke, because the ashes lie on my tongue for ages. Otherwise, the finish is a smooth, even fade.

    Mega alcoholic

with water: yes, it needs and can tolerate water, it becomes sweeter and more balanced, but still a slight off-note

Conclusion: somehow disappointing, looks like the normal barrel strength 12, and then 115 EUR? In addition, a slight misnote. OK, it's a bit different than the 12, more intense, also more sweet. But no, that's not how HP and I become friends.
    • Nose
      84 84
Olosherry notes, raisins, some heather peat, but unfortunately also some sulfur, caramel, naturally strong alcohol at 64%
    • Taste
      86 86
Sherry, raisins, caramel, hardly any nuts, then the heather came through, here in the taste the alcohol is very well integrated in contrast to the nose
    • Finish
      86 86
long, sherry and heather, some wood, caramel
